Amelia Fornicola
Wall Township resident Amelia George Fornicola, formerly of Long Branch, passed away on Friday, Feb. 15 at her residence.

She was 93 years old.

“A, A, A, ” and a “Gold Star, ” was who Amelia George Fornicola was to her father.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1915 to Antonio George and Angelina Scaglione George. Amelia was the eighth of nine children born to the Georges.

Skipping three grades, Amelia graduated Manuel Training High School in Brooklyn, in 1929, at 14-years- old at the outset of the great depression and could not continue her education.

In 1952, she had moved to Long Branch, and while residing there she was employed as the supervisor of the Print Shop at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, from 1957 until her retirement in 1977. In 1980, she moved to her home in Wall Township.

Amelia married her husband, Paul Joseph Fornicola, in 1940 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Paul died in 1968. She was also predeceased by her parents; her three brothers, Americo, George and Alfred; and her five sisters, Eleanor, Florence, Evelyn, Marian and Camille.

Amelia leaves behind her children, Paul Fornicola and his wife, Mary Lou, of Wall, Diane Cusa, of Interlaken, and Ronald Fornicola, of Wall, who was her caregiver.

She also leaves seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, who she truly adored and whose lives she was a big part of. They will all miss their “Nanny Amy.”

Her grandchildren are Paul L. and Ted Fornicola, Bill, Michael and Paul Cusa, Cynthia Fleming and her husband, Jeff, all of Wall, and Michele Berkowitz and her husband, Gary, of Shark River Hills, Neptune.

Her great grandchildren are Amanda, Billy, Paul and Eileen Cusa, Gary Paul and Lilia Mary Berkowitz, Anna Nies Fornicola and Caroline and Claire Fleming.

Burial was held in Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Restoration Fund, 705 Second Ave., Asbury Park, 07712.

O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of the arrangements.

Daniel E. McNulty
Spring Lake Heights resident Daniel Eugene McNulty died Tuesday, Feb. 12 at his home.

He was 83 years old.

Born on Aug. 28, 1924, he was the son of John and Mary Smith McNulty. Mr. McNulty lived in West Orange for 75 years before moving to Spring Lake Heights. He was a graduate of West Orange High School and attended Seton Hall College.

Daniel’s served in the U.S. Army from March 1943 and was honorably discharged in November 1945. He was attached to the 294th Engineer Combat Battalion, VII Corps. He trained for action in the Mohave Desert and in Sherbourne, England, prior to the D Day invasion. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was among the first troops into Berlin.

A special memory of this time was afforded him when he practiced with the U.S. Army football team in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. He traveled with his battalion through France, Belgium and Germany and fought in the five major campaigns in Europe.

Shortly after returning home from the war, he met Genevieve E. Langan. They married in 1948. He joined Newburgh Moiré Co., as a young man and eventually became president and owner of the company. He retired after nearly 50 years in the textile business. Daniel’s beloved wife to whom he was married for 54 years, died in 2002.

He was past-post Commander of the American Legion Post No. 22 in West Orange and a member of the West Orange Mountain Club. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society of the Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Joseph Parishes in West Orange. He was also a trustee for the Silk and Rayon Association of the greater metropolitan area.

He is survived by his son, Mark D. McNulty and his wife, Elizabeth, of Spring Lake Heights, and his daughter, Cynthia M. Gutkowski and her husband, Stanley, of Oak Hills, Va.

Daniel’s grandchildren, Mark C. McNulty, Daniel E. McNulty, James P. McNulty, David C. Gutkowski, Lisa M. Mishkin and Paul J. Gutkowski appreciate the sense of fun and laughter that he always shared with them. His love for children continued on with his new great-grandchildren, Justin Cooper Gutkowski and Blythe Rose Mishkin.

He loved sports, especially watching his grandchildren play. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan and always cheered for the N.Y. Giants. He was a man of great courage and generosity of spirit.

His family and friends will miss the lovely tunes he whistled, his quick wit and the love he showed toward all who knew him.

Entombment was held at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, was in charge of the arrangements.

Elizabeth Ward
Manasquan resident Elizabeth “Janet” Ward died on Feb. 15 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 88 years old.

Born in Matawan, she lived in Matawan and Vincentown, before moving to Manasquan nine years ago.

Mrs. Ward was a homemaker. While living in Matawan she was a Brownie leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was a member of Matawan’s Junior Womens Club and enjoyed playing bridge in the Thursday Fort Nightly Bridge Club in Matawan.

Mrs. Ward was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Douglas B., in 2006, and her son, Barry, in 1993.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce and her husband, George Burrows, of Manasquan, and Joan Van Dorn and her husband, Blaine Cornelison, of Murray, Ky.; six grandchildren, April and her husband, David Bennett, Coxsackie, N.Y., Loree Burrows, Prattsville, N.Y., Chrissie Andreini, Fairfax, Va., Barry J. Ward, Mission Viejo, Calif., Eric Cornelison, serving in the U.S. Navy in Bahrain and Shane Cornelison, Ocean Springs, Miss.; two great-grandchildren, Katelyn Bennett and Mason Andreini.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the First Baptist Church, 232 Main St., Matawan, 07747, in Elizabeth’s name.

The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, was in charge of the arrangements.

Benno Luepke IV
Boulder Creek, Calif. resident Benno Everett DeBoer Luepke IV, formerly of Wall Township, passed away at his beloved home in the Redwoods on Friday, Feb. 1.

He was 64 years old.

Benno was born in Neptune and grew up in Wall Township, where he was a member of the first graduating class of Wall High School in 1961.

He played on the charter football team and drama club. He was active in the Wall Methodist Church.

He enlisted and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1966, completing basic training at Palo Alto, Texas, before becoming a jet engine mechanic at Merced AFB, Calif.

He was self-employed as a construction handyman. He was also a voracious reader, disaster volunteer and loved to repair and distribute toys and books as a Secret Santa around his home near Santa Cruz.

Ben was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benno E. and Cecelia Luepke, of Wall.

He is survived by a sister, Susan Kenlon, Rockaway; two brothers, Bruce Luepke, Appomattox, Va., and Frederick Luepke, Bloomfield; a niece, Jennivere Kenlon; and three nephews, Justin Sean Kenlon, Bruce Robert Luepke and Graham Luepke.

A memorial service for family and friends will be held at the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, 2652 Highway 138, Wall [adjacent to the Route 18 north entrance] on Feb. 24 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Albina Schuber
Spring Lake resident Albina Leveque “Albie” Schuber died on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Lincroft.

She was 90 years old.

Mrs. Schuber was a resident of Spring Lake for over 50 years. She was born in West Englewood and raised in Teaneck.

Albina was a former member of the Eastern Star, a member of the Church in Brielle and a past president of the Woman’s Guild.

Before retiring she had worked many years at Monmouth Medical Center and the Deal Country Club. She also volunteered at Point Pleasant Hospital and the Thrift Shop of Manasquan.

She was predeceased by her son, Herk William, in 1999; and her sisters, Madeline Shaughnessy, Marie Beggs and Alice Slafer. Her loving husband of 66 years, Fred William Schuber, passed away on Oct. 23, 2007.

Surviving are her son, Gary and his wife, Marcella, of Rumson; a sister, Madeline Dietz, of Ridgefield; three grandchildren, Marcella and her husband, Anthony, Patrick and his wife, Marta, and Mark; and eight great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends will be received at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, on Friday, Feb. 22 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. with a memorial service offered at 11.

Committal will be private.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 East Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Susan Shields
Point Pleasant resident Susan Gail [nee Dahms] Shields passed away Saturday, Feb. 9 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. She leaves behind many loved ones, including family in Wall.

She was 44 years old.

Sue was a loving and devoted wife and mother, as well as a beloved daughter and sister. She was a favorite of 13 nieces and nephews. For Sue, her family always came first.

She was a loyal and caring friend to many, as well as an active member of her community. Sue grew up in Wall Township and was a graduate of Wall High School. She raised her family in Point Pleasant, and worked as a para-professional for the Point Pleasant school district for many years.

Surviving is her husband, Christopher Shields, and her beloved children, Courtney and Tyler. She is also survived by her loving parents, Raymond and Edna Dahms; her sister, Karen, of Allentown; and brothers Gary and Brian, both of Wall; her mother and father-in-law, Thomas and Peggy Shields, of Toms River; her two sisters in-law, Peggy Bruno and Ellen Campo, of Toms River; and her two brothers in-law, Chip Shields, of Wall and Bryan Shields, of Tinton Falls.

A funeral service will be held today, Thursday, Feb. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Church in Brielle, Riverview Drive, Brielle.

Burial will be in Atlantic View Cemetery, Manasquan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to establish an educational fund in the name of “Courtney and Tyler Shields Education Fund.” Donations may be mailed to Manasquan Savings Bank, 85 Bridge Ave., Bay Head, 08742.

Her loss will be dearly felt by many. We will miss you forever Sue.
