Richard J. Backhus
Point Pleasant resident Richard J. Backhus died Thursday, Jan. 31 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.
He was 65 years old.
Born in Hackensack and formerly of Wood Ridge, he lived in Point Pleasant for over 35 years.
A United States Navy veteran, he served in the Seabees.
He attended St. Paul’s Untied Methodist Church, Bay Head and was an avid bike rider around Point Pleasant.
He was predeceased by his mother, Veronica Sheppard Backhus; his stepmother, Helen Spill Backhus; and by his father, Frederick G. Backhus Sr.
He is survived by brother, Frederick G. Backhus Jr. and his stepsister, Barbara Backhus, both of Point Pleasant. He is also survived by a nephew, Fred G., III; two nieces, Kristy Lynn and Susan Lee; eight grandnieces and grandnephews; and by his close friend and loving caregiver, Ann Anastasiou.
Services will be held privately. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions made to Meridian Hospice, [Denote: At Brick], c/o 4900 Route. 33, Suite 200, Neptune, NJ 07753, are suggested.

Erin Archer Gaffney
Point Pleasant resident Erin Archer Gaffney died Friday, Jan. 25, at home.
She was 50 years old.
Born in Long Branch, she lived in Keyport before moving to Point Pleasant three years ago. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by and will be missed by her two daughters, April Hulsizer, who is in the Army serving in Iraq, and Marie Hulsizer, of Point Pleasant; four brothers, Christopher Archer, of Hazlet, Kevin Archer, of Woodbury, James Archer and his wife, Elizabeth, of South Carolina, and Joseph Archer, of Hazlet; two sisters, Kathleen Moravek and her husband, Leonard, of Toms River, and Pageen Ford, of Toms River; four nieces, Colleen Doening, of Ocean Grove, June Goodman, of Killeen, Texas, Nicole Lasecki, of Mantua, and HelenAnn Moravek, of Carteret; and a nephew, Leonard Moravek Jr., of Elizabeth.
The Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, Toms River, handled the arrangements.

Frank P. Bellis
Point Pleasant resident Frank P. Bellis died Monday, Feb. 4, in his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was 72 years old.
Born in Suffern, N.Y., he lived in Nanuet and Spring Valley, N.Y. before moving to Point Pleasant in 1979.
A United States Army veteran, he was a lifelong member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 5 of Nanuet, N.Y., and locals 5 and 8 of New Jersey.
Frank was always dedicated to his family. He was an avid fisherman and loved the outdoors.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Annick Benoit Bellis; two daughters, LuAnn Bellis and her partner, Erik Packer, of Vermont, and Lisa D’Andrea and her husband, Anthony, of Brick; and two grandchildren, Carly and Anthony.
The Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, was in charge of arrangements.
On Friday at 9 a.m., a Liturgy of Christian Burial
will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Church, Point Pleasant Beach, followed by interment at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Nanuet. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Robert J. Lowry
Brick resident Robert J. Lowry, formerly of Point Pleasant, died Monday, Feb. 4 at the Ocean Medical Center, Brick, with his loving family by his side.
He was 61 years old.
Born in Bryn Mawr, he lived in Upper Darby, Pa. and in Point Pleasant before moving to Brick nine years ago.
A United States Army Vietnam veteran, he had worked as a truck driver.
Mr. Lowry was a life member of the American Legion and V.F.W., both of Point Pleasant, and the Disabled American Veterans.
A beloved husband, surviving are his wife Georgia Cougle Lowry; his stepdaughter, Doreen Slater and her husband, Stephen; his stepson, Donald Schreiber and his wife, Kerri, and their children, Kayla and Brendan; his two sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Chris Burke and Mary Ellen and Bob Scott; and by his dog, Timone.

Monica Godfrey Kamenel
Point Pleasant and Miami resident Monica Godfrey Kamenel died Saturday, Jan. 26, in Aventura Hospital, Aventura, Fla.
She was 80 years old.
Born in London, England, she graduated from the Godolfin and Latimer School. While working in Tangier, North Africa for the American Joint Distribution Committee, an organization helping Jewish refugees emigrate to Israel, she met and married
Theodore Kamenel. They lived in New York City, Point Pleasant, Honduras, Central America and Pasadena, Md., before finally settling down in Point Pleasant.
She was a legal secretary for a local attorney for more than 30 years before retiring in 2001.
She was very active in local causes, loved doing crossword puzzles, going to the beach and reading. She was also an amazing letter writer and an avid proponent for animal rights.
She was predeceased by her husband, Theodore; and her son, Jonathan “Bub.”
She is survived by her three daughters, Sandra Przybylowski and her husband William, of Brick, Tina Kamenel, of Miami, and Diana and her husband Douglas Trettin, of Atlanta. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Abby and David Przybylowski and Naomi, Hannah and Theodore Trettin; her sisters, Toby Clifford and Jackie Greenglass, of London, England; and her brother, Raymond Godfrey of Philadelphia.
There will be a memorial service for Monica in the spring in Point Pleasant. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Humane Society.
Capt. Ronald J. Lambert
Sebastian Fla. resident Capt. Ronald J. Lambert, formerly of Point Pleasant, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Indian River Medical Center, Vero Beach, Fla.
He was 53 years old.
Ron was born Dec. 27, 1954 in Staten Island, N.Y. and lived in Sebastian for 19 years coming from Point Pleasant.
Ron worked for Exxon Shipping Company for 10 years. He held a 1600 Ton Master’s License, was a ship’s captain, and a partner of the Sebastian Princess Fishing Boat.
Ron was a member of the Masonic Ocean Lodge 89, Belmar; the past patron of the Ocean Chapter 214 of the Eastern Star, Belmar.
Surviving are his bride of 33 years, Jo Ann Lambert; three daughters, Jessica Hines, Jodie Lambert, and Jo Ann Lambert, all of Sebastian, Fla.; “the son he never had, ” Danny Sprague, of Sebastian, Fla.; two grandsons, Nathan and Braeden; two granddaughters, Taylor and Andie; his mother, Helen Lambert, of Brick; three brothers, Steven Lambert, Brian Ehlers and Ralph Hernandez; two sisters, Sherry Lambert and Patti Cicala; and numerous friends.
The Strunk Funeral Home, Sebastian, Fla., handled the arrangements.

Mary Huber Melody
Point Pleasant resident Mary Huber Melody died Friday, Feb. 1 in her home.
She was 80 years old.
Known as a sports enthusiast, Mrs. Melody was born in Newark and lived in Irvington for many years before moving to Point Pleasant.
She attended St. Leo’s School, Irvington, and Benedictine Academy in Elizabeth before attending comptometer school, and working for many years at A&P on Peddie Street and Elizabeth Avenue, Newark. She also worked in the bursar’s office at Seton Hall University.
Mrs. Melody was a communicant of St. Peter’s Parish in Point Pleasant Beach; a member of the Right To Life Committee of New Jersey; The Friends of Boystown; the Jersey Shore Irish American Club; Ladies Auxiliary of the Ocean County retired Police and Firefighters Association; The United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y. Alumni Association Boosters; The Seton Hall University Baseball Diamond Club; The St. John’s University Baseball Diamond Club; The Montclair State University Football Booster Club; Georgia Southern University Softball Booster Club; Fairleigh Dickinson University Baseball Diamond Club; NJIT Baseball Diamond Club; and the Union, Brick; Colonia and Southern Regional high schools’ fifth quarter, diamond, cheerleading, basketball, track, swimming, softball, wrestling and golf booster clubs.
She was also a supporter of the Monmouth University Honors Association and the Point Pleasant First Aid Squad and EMT; Kean University and the nursing programs at Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing, and UMDNJ as well as Ocean County College.
Mrs. Melody was an auxiliary member of the St. Paddy’s Day Police and Fire benefit for Project Children, and an associate member of the Ironbound and Steuben Associations of Newark.
She was also a member of the New York Yankee, Paul O’Neill Club.
Her husband, Battalion Chief NFD, Thomas J. Melody passed away in 1991. She was also predeceased by her parents Albyn and Florence Huber; and her brother, William Huber.
She is survived by brothers Francis and Jack Huber; and sisters, Ellen Huber-Gelbman and Marcia Huber S.M.I.C. She leaves three sons, John, of Union, Tom, of Manahawkin, and Mike, of Brick; and three daughters, Susan Collins, of Wallace, N.C., Colleen Dailey, of Iselin, and Kate Gallagher, of Brick. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, handled the arrangements. Burial
took place in St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.
