Jean Muriel Wilson Gruber
Wall Township resident Jean Muriel Wilson Gruber passed away on Feb. 1, at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

Cherished Mom and lady of great wit, Jean Muriel Wilson Gruber was born on Aug. 15, 1922 to Robert James Wilson, Jr. and Emma Rosetta Gillard in Orange. She grew up in West Orange and graduated from West Orange High School at the age of 15, with a full scholarship to NYU.

Jean’s apartment on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village afforded her quick access to her classes and also to the NYC night life where she merrily pursued her love of dancing and listening to live music. Jean was a social butterfly and also a great singer. She was approached by a Big Band to join their tour, but her father declined the invitation on her behalf. Later in life, while raising her own family in Staten Island, N.Y., Jean found her musical outlet, singing with the Sweet Adelines.

Jean’s three children, Caroline, John and Amy were blessed with a devoted and inspiring mother. A highly intelligent, articulate and resourceful woman, Jean also radiated great warmth and generosity of spirit, always looking on the bright side and making the best of any situation. Jean’s keen sense of humor buoyed those around her, and she made friends easily.

After retiring from her full-time position at Staten Island Academy, where she was secretary to the Headmaster, she moved to Wall Township, into a house she had admired from afar for years, slowing the car whenever she passed, as she drove from the family’s summer bungalow in Manasquan.

One day she saw a For Sale sign in the yard, and she stopped the car, rang the doorbell and bought the house. Such was the gumption of Jean Gruber!

Jean became an active force in her new community. She kept busy working part-time, tending to her garden, caring for her beloved dogs and also was the editor of the newsletter for the local AARP chapter, eventually becoming president of the chapter.

Jean may be most famous in the Wall Township area for organizing bus trips to Atlantic City. This activity brought her great pleasure. She reveled in the spirit of the fun and truly valued the companionship of her bus trip buddies, known as ‘Friday’s Group.’ Her favorite casino was the Showboat, of course, for the music!

The people in Jean’s life were treated to a true friend with a sharp wit, gift of gab and quite a pretty face. She was a shining star.

A celebration of Jean’s life is being planned by her family. The date is still to be announced and will be posted.

Donations to the Humane Society or other similar organizations would honor Jean’s love and compassion for animals, if one is so inclined.

A special mention of Sunnyside Manor in Manasquan also would be her wish. She and her family are grateful for the exemplary care and heartfelt nurturing of the excellent staff who recently became ‘like old friends’ to Jean, making her last days here with us, so very special and bright.

Sweet Adeline,
My Adeline,
At night, dear heart,
For you I pine;
In all my dreams,
Your fair face beams.
You’re the flower of my heart,
Sweet Adeline.

C. William Cubberley Sr.
Mr. C. William [Bill] Cubberley Sr., a 40-year year resident of Wall Township who currently resided at the Sunnyside Manor of Manasquan, passed away Sunday, Feb. 3 at the Ocean Medical of Brick, of natural causes.

He was 93 years old.

He was born on May 21, 1914 in Robbinsville, to Maude and Charles E. Cubberley.

Bill attended Rider College, in Trenton.

He worked at National Radiator Company as a business manager and later was employed by Mannings Mayflower Moving Company, in Neptune, and served as company president. During this time he also owned and operated Cubberley’s Auction Barn in Red Bank. He served as president of the Asbury Park Kiwanis, and the New Jersey Motor Truck Association. In addition, he was a member of the “Happy Days” String Band of Red Bank, and the National Auctioneers Association. In the past, Bill served as an usher at the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove.

Following his retirement from Mannings Mayflower, he became the branch manager of the Danskin Real Estate and Insurance Company, of Spring Lake. He was active in local politics. Bill was an avid lover of miniature horses and donkeys where he raised them on his “Woodhaven” Farm, in Wall Township.

Bill, who was predeceased by his parents, and his son, Gary R.Cubberley, in 1992, is survived by his two loving children, C. William Cubberley Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Bradenton, Fla. and Allentown, and Karen D. Shattuck and her husband, Bradd, of Rohnert Park, Calif. Also surviving are eight beloved grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on today at 10 a.m. until noon followed immediately by funeral services at the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, 2652 Highway 138, Wall [corner of Route 18 north entrance].

Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, in Brielle.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Monmouth County SPCA, 260 Wall Street, PO Box 93, Eatontown, 07724.
