Donald E. Carey
Spring Lake resident Donald E. Carey passed away on Monday, Feb. 4 at the Medical Center of Ocean County, Brick Hospital.
He was 82 years old.
Donald had been employed as an Engineer for the State of New Jersey, Department of Environmental Protection, retiring in 1993.
Prior to this, he had been employed by the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority, Key West for two years. He had served as president of the NJ Water Works Association in 1973, and had served as the president of the Exchange Club, South Plainfield, in 1966, and had also been a member of St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt.
He had also been a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, serving aboard the USS New Hanover.
Born in Bronx, N.Y., he has been a resident of Spring Lake since 1975.
Surviving is his loving wife of 43 years Loretta [nee Martyn] Carey, and his devoted daughter, Joy Ann Carey, and her significant other, Greg McCambridge, of Mesa, Ariz.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 8:45 a.m. from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial
at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catharine’s RC Church, Spring Lake.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Committal will be private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society, 801 Broad St., Shrewsbury, 07702, in his memory.
M. Corinne Grunke
Wayside resident M. Corinne Grunke, formerly of Shark River Hills section of Neptune, died Thursday, Jan. 17 in St. Barnabus Hospice at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Bay Head, she lived in Spring Lake, Belmar and Shark River Hills, before moving to the Wayside Retirement Center.
She was 92 years old.
Mrs. Grunke was a homemaker. She was a communicant of Holy Innocents Roman Catholic Church in Neptune.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Louis S. Grunke, in 2003; and by her granddaughter, Donna Corinne Clayton.
Surviving are her daughter, Margaret “Cori” Clayton, of Point Pleasant Beach; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Burial
was held at Monmouth Memorial Park in Tinton Falls.
Donations may be made in her name to a local chapter of Al-Anon.
O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of the arrangements.
Gabriel Sopko
Sea Girt resident Gabriel Sopko passed away on Friday, Jan. 18 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
He was 90 years old.
Mr. Sopko was born in Aliquippa, Pa. and came to the Jersey Shore in 1941.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theatre and was a member of the VFW Post 4715 in Point Pleasant Beach.
He was a commercial fisherman for more than 30 years. He was the owner of the Dickie Boy and also fished on many other boats. The last 13 years he was the manager of the Fisherman’s Co-op in Point Pleasant Beach.
Mr. Sopko was predeceased by five brothers and a sister.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Eleanor Osborn Sopko; his niece, Janet Ownes and her husband, Earl, of Brielle; two great-nephews, Earl Jr. and Tracy Ownes, Sea Girt and Daniel and his wife, Jaclyn Ownes, Matawan.
Graveside services with military honors were held at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls.
Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, was in charge of the arrangements.
Harriet F. Duane
Manasquan resident Harriet F. Duane died on Monday, Jan. 21 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
She was 91 years old.
Mrs. Duane was born in Brooklyn and lived in Monroe Township before moving to Manasquan in 1986.
She was a member of St. Denis Church and its rosary alter society.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Duane, in 1985.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Kenneth J. and Marie Duane, Spring Lake; three grandchildren, Jennifer Miller, Spring Lake Heights, and Sean Duane and Bridget Duane, both of New York City; and one great-granddaughter, Kennedy Miller.
Friends may call today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan.
A funeral Mass will be offered Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Denis Church, Manasquan.
Interment will follow at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.
Vivian R. Neary
Brielle resident Vivian R. Neary died on Sunday, Jan. 20.
She was 85 years old.
Mrs. Neary was born and raised in Jersey City, moving to Brielle in 1957.
She was employed by the Wall Township Board of Education for 15 years.
After her retirement, she devoted her time to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, John “Pete” Neary, in 1990.
She is survived by her son, John T. “Muskrat Jack” Neary, of Point Pleasant; daughter, Roberta Neary, Yulan, N.Y.; grandchildren, Erin Osborn and Jennifer and Mark Gaskin; great-grandchildren, Darius and Nathan Osborn; and adopted daughter, Nanny Lewis.
Funeral services will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan.
Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle.

Clifford L. Saby
Sea Girt and Naples, Fla. resident Clifford L. Saby died on Friday, Jan. 18 in Naples Community Hospital.
He was 86 years old.
Mr. Saby was born in Werner, N.D. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1940 and served for six years. While in the Coast Guard he was in charge of payroll for the Philadelphia District and he also served in the South Pacific on an AKA ship.
Mr. Saby attended Strayer’s Business College, Philadelphia, and graduated from Rutgers University. He was an accountant with an office in Sea Girt.
He was also a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church, Spring Lake.
He was an event sponsor of the World Piano Competition for two years, on the Board of Directors for the Naples Music Club and Development Program, on the Board of Directors for the Classical Chamber Concert, Naples, a classic antique car collector, member of the Model T Car Club, Rolls Royce Club of Florida, Naples Marco Island Car Club and North Shore Antique Car Club.
He was also a substantial contributor to St. Luke’s Nursing Home, North Dakota, St. Elizabeth’s Ann Seton School, Naples, Classical Chamber Concert, Naples and Luzeme Music Camp, New York.
He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Blair Saby, in 1991.
Surviving is his special friend Audrey C. Zaiser, of Belmar and Naples, Fla.
Interment was held at Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle.

Mickale Piriano
Wall resident Mickale “Margaret” Piriano died on Thursday, Jan. 17 at her daughter’s home, also in Wall.
She was 90 years old.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Piriano was born in Pittston, Pa. She lived in Manhattan then raised her two children in Queens, then moved to Bohemia, Long Island, N.Y., before moving to the Jersey Shore 20 years ago.
She was a communicant of the Church of St. Rose in Belmar.
Mrs. Piriano was predeceased by her loving husband, Vincent; her son, Louis Periano; and by seven siblings.
She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Green and her husband, Lee, of Wall; a daughter-in-law, Susan Periano, of Pennsylvania; her brother, Pep Policare, of Maspeth N.Y.; five grandchildren, Michelle, Karine, Susan, Lisa and Michael and nine great-grandchildren.
Burial
was at Atlantic View Cemetery, in Manasquan.
