John M. Jordan
Brielle resident John M. Jordan died on Wednesday, Dec. 26 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, in Neptune.

He was 87 years old.

Born in Penns Grove, he lived in Union, Springfield and Scotch Plains, before moving to Brielle 20 years ago. John also wintered in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Mr. Jordan was a vice president of Individual Contracts for Prudential Insurance Company in Newark for 47 years before retiring. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy and was a member of St. Denis Church, in Manasquan. He also was very active with the Union High School Alumni.

Mr. Jordan was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy V. and his second wife, Marjorie.

He is survived by one son, John S., of Long Valley; two daughters, Nancy Jordan-Haussamen, of Bound Brook and Kathy Kalck, of Cary, Ill.; one sister, Doris Pierce, of Basking Ridge; his loving companion Rosemarie “Dolly” Van Riper; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Interment was held at Hillside cemetery in Scotch Plains.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, P.O. Box 27106, New York, NY 10087-7106, or American Heart Association, 1 Union St., Suite 301, Robbinsville, 08691.

Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, was in charge of the arrangements.

Hildegarde “Hildie” S. Brooman
Hildegarde “Hildie” S. Brooman, formerly Hildegarde Eleanor Schmitt of Wilkesbarre, Pa.

Hildie Brooman went home to the Lord on Dec. 18 after a long illness. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She is predeceased by her two sons, Bankston Brooman and William Brooman.

She along with her husband and son were partners and owners of the Surf and Sand Restaurant, Manasquan, for 25 years which was a favorite summer gathering place. She retired in 1982 and spent many winters in Sarasota Florida and summers at her home in Manasquan. In her younger years she was educated at St. Anne’s Academy and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School and owned the Argosy Book Store in Maywood.

She was a lifetime member of the Spring Lake Chapter of Deborah Hospital with whom she was the treasurer for 13 years. She and her husband were members of the Elks Lodge in Manasquan. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Denis Roman Catholic Chruch, Manasquan.

She is survived by her loving family, especially her husband of 58 years, Bankston Brooman, her daughters Nancy Bellia and her husband Richard of Wall and Leslie Barlow and her husband Stephen of Sea Girt, her son David J. Brooman and daughter in law Gardenia, her grandchildren Michelle Chapman of Wall, Danielle Hopta of Brooklyn, NY, Cynthia Rumpf of Point Pleasant, Jenniffer Costanzo of Wall and her husband Eric, Stephanie Peduto of Wall and her husband Eric, Stephen Barlow of Wanamassa and his wife Leanne, Thomas Barlow of Wall, Christian Barlow of Wall, David Brooman of Ardmore, Pa., Richard Brooman of Ardmore, Pa., Kyle Brooman of Ardmore, Pa. and Luke Brooman of Ardmore, Pa. her great-grandchildren, Katie and Kevin Chapman of Wall, Joey Sanguine of Point Pleasant, Dylan, Christopher and Madison Costanzo of Wall, Ava and Massimo Peduto of Wall.

A memoral Mass to celebrate her life will be held on Jan. 3 at 9:30 AM at St. Denis Church, Rt. 71 in Manasquan. in lieu of flowers the family would greatly appreciate donations in Hildie’s name to one of her favorite charities: Deborah Hospital Foundation, National Headquarters, 20 Pine Mill Road, Browns Mills, NJ 08015 or The Support Center for Child Advocates, 1900 Cherry St., Philadelphia, PA 19103.

Walter S. Van Riper
Sea Girt resident Walter S. Van Riper died on Dec. 24 at his home.

He was 79 years old.

Born in Warwick, N.Y., he lived in the Parkchester section of the Bronx until moving to Sea Girt in 1979. Walter was a proud graduate of New York University with a degree in engineering, and he was a sales engineer with Albert Weiss A/C Engineering Co., New York City, until his retirement in 1985.

Walter served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a sergeant in the Corp of Engineers. He had been a volunteer fireman with the Excelsior Hose Company No. 1 in Warwick, N.Y., and was a loyal member of the Fireman’s Association of New York for 57 years.

Walter is survived by his wife, the love of his life for more than 53 years, Mary E. [nee Sweeney] Van Riper; his sister, Dorothy Van Dynhoven and her husband, Jake, of Warwick, N.Y.

He was predeceased by his brother, Robert.

Walter also leaves his nieces, Marita Kresge, Patricia Englehardt, Barbara Sweeney, Teresa Tyzbir, Morna DePasquale, Elizabeth Lodewick and Martha Ann Tamburo; and his nephews, Matthew, Mark, Jack, and Daniel Sweeney, along with 18 great nieces and nephews.

Walter was a kind, loving man with a great sense of humor. He was a loyal friend and beloved neighbor and he will be greatly missed by all who new him.

Funeral arrangements will be private, under the direction of O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

The family requests in lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to the American Diabetes Association, 19 School House Road Somerset, 08873.

William O’Shea
Belmar resident William O’Shea died on Sunday, Dec. 23.

He was 90 years old.

Born in Huntington Station, Long Island, N.Y., he lived in Deal before moving to Belmar.

He worked for the United States Post Office in Deal for 37 years before retiring in 1974.

While in Deal, he was chief of the fire department and captain of the first aid squad.

He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Frances; his brothers, Vincent, Howard, Donald, Charles; his sister, Colleen Heydt; and his beloved wife, Edna.

Surviving are his sons, William A. O’Shea Jr. and Robert T. O’Shea; his sister, Gloria Gifford; his niece, Susan Windsor and family; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Interment was held at Monmouth Memorial Park.

Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar, was in charge of the arrangements.

Thelma Cameron
Brick resident Thelma M. Cameron, formerly of Spring Lake Heights, died on Monday, Dec. 24, at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

She was 83 years old.

Born in Philadelphia, she was a resident of Spring Lake Heights for 50 years and moved to Brick earlier this year.

She was a graduate of Yeadon High School and employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad before moving to the Jersey Shore in 1952. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker, and a volunteer for the Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

She was predeceased by her parents, Mildred Steiner Gray and Earl Gray, and her sister and brother-in law, Doris and John Wright.

Thelma is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Bruce; three daughters and a son-in-law, Lynn and William Slowey, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Jill Cameron, of Spring Lake Heights, Stacey Cameron, of Brick; a sister and brother-in law, Diane and Ben Werntz, of Marmora and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends will be received on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. with a 4 p.m. service at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Associated Humane Societies, Popcorn Park Zoo, Humane Way At Lacey Road, P.O. Box 43, Forked River, 08731-0043.

Myrtle Kuntz
Avon resident Myrtle Kuntz died on Friday, Dec. 21, at home.

She was 93 years old.

Born in Thief River Falls, Minn., she was a lifelong resident in Jersey City for 45 years before moving to Avon. She enjoyed cooking for and spending time with her family, and playing cards with her friends.

She was a member of the Avon Women’s Club and Leisure Senior’s Club.

She was predeceased by her parents, Ludwig and Ida Johnson; her husband, Joseph Kuntz; two brothers, Carl and Bennie Johnson; three sisters, Hazel Huot, Gladys Langwost and Louise Quirk; and two children, George Kuntz and Carol [Ticki] Kuntz.

She is survived by a brother, Leonard Johnson, of Minnesota; a daughter, JoAnn Matthews, of Florida; a daughter-in-law, Jane Kuntz, of Alabama; eight grandchildren, Glenn Tagliareni, of Florida, Ronald Tagliareni, of Avon, Jodi Profita, of Pennsylvania, Terry Tagliareni, of Neptune, Susie Killingsworth, of Alabama, George Kuntz, of Ohio, Joe Kuntz, of Alabama, Kathy Kuntz, of Alabama; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral from the Reilly Funeral Home, 801 D St., Belmar, today at 9 a.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Elizabeth Church, in Avon, at 10 a.m.

Interment will be held at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Avon First Aid Squad, P.O. Box 8, Avon, 07717, would be greatly appreciated.

Gerald Smith
East Stroudsburg, Pa. Gerald D. Smith, formerly of Belmar died on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at home.

He was 74 years old.

Born in Barberton, Ohio, he lived in Belmar for 30 years before moving to East Stroudsburg 20 years ago.

Mr. Smith was a member of St. Rose Church, in Belmar.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary K., in 2003; his son, Christopher, in 1980; and a daughter, Regina Purdy, in March of this year.

Surviving are four sons, Paul, of Belmar, Steven P., of Belmar, Michael J., of Southampton, and John D., of East Stroudsburg; three daughters, Marie Rangaswamy, of Red Bank, Gloria Smith, of Barnegat, Charlotte E. Shutes, of Waretown; two brothers, Larry and Forest; and 10 grandchildren.

Interment was held at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall Township.

Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar, was in charge of arrangements.
