Hugh V. Hughes
Point Pleasant resident Hugh V. Hughes died peacefully Wednesday, June 10 in his home after a long illness.
He was 75 years old.
Born on Nov. 24, 1933 in Jersey City, to the late Hugh and Sarah Jane Hughes, he has lived in Point Pleasant since 1941.
He was a 1951 graduate of Point Pleasant Beach High School and veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, being honorably discharged in 1956.
Mr. Hughes joined the Point Pleasant Police Department in 1969 and in 1981 was promoted to detective sergeant. He retired, due to a heart attack, in 1984 and later returned to the department working as a computer operator until retiring in 1998.
While a police officer, he was a member of the Point Pleasant Police Riot Squad and was the motorcycle officer. He will be remembered as the police officer who always chaperoned the Point Pleasant High School overnight band and class trips during the 1970s.
He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks, Point Pleasant; and was a past member of the P.B.A.; the V.F.W., and the L.O.O. Moose. He was also a past-president of the Point Pleasant High School Sports Booster Association, and had coached for the Point Pleasant Little League and the American Legion Baseball League.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 54 years, Mary Ann Hanly Hughes; his loving children, daughter and son-in-law, Colleen Hughes Lee and Gerald Lee, daughter Kim Hughes Boesch, and son and daughter-in-law Mickey and Kellie Hughes; grandchildren, Alison Boesch May, Brian Lee, Thomas Boesch, Bridget Lee DeLuise, Taylor Hughes, and Ty Hughes; and great-grandchildren, Peyton Boesch, Mary Madison Boesch, Jackson May, and McKenna Lee.
Friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, June 12, at the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road. At 9 a.m., Saturday, a Liturgy of Christian Burial
will be celebrated at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, Forman and St. Louis Avenues, Point Pleasant Beach. Interment
will be held privately.

Jane Hanley
Manasquan resident Jane Scott Hanley, formerly of Spring Lake, died on Sunday, July 15, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, in Neptune.
She was 87 years old.
Jane was born in Pompton Lakes, in October, 1919, the fourth of five children of Alice Donavan, an accomplished artist who worked in oils and watercolors and George Madison Scott, the owner and publisher of the Butler Argus newspaper.
She graduated from Pompton Lakes High School in 1937, where she was very involved in school activities including being head cheerleader. After high school, she spent most of the years during World War II working at DuPont and Curtis Wright where she met her future husband, Joseph Hanley. They were married
in 1946 and lived in Pompton Lakes, until moving to Davenport, Iowa, in 1953, and then to Middletown, in 1954.
Her beloved husband, Joseph Hanley, died in 1961. He was the owner of Monmouth Packaging and Supply Company, located in Long Branch and later in Red Bank.
In 1963, Jane and her five children moved to Spring Lake, where she lived for 10 years. In 1973, after all of her children had established their own homes, she moved to Manasquan, where she lived for over 30 years.
After her husband’s death, Jane returned to work to help support her family and held positions as secretary, receptionist, and travel agent. In later years, she particularly loved spending each summer working at Spring Lake Beach at the South End Pavilion, where she became well known to countless children going to and from the pool, as well as to many local and summer residents, who looked forward to their daily chat with Jane.
She loved music, dancing, reading, socializing with her many friends, caring for her kitties Walter, Callie and Talcie and her faithful dog, Rags, and especially being at the beach.
She is survived by her five children, Barbara McGowan, of Snellville, Ga., Paul, of Boonton Township, Scott, of North Andover, Mass., Kevin, of Darnestown, Md., and Meghan, of Lake Como; 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; her brother, John Scott, of Jefferson; her cousin, Jack Smith, of Pompton Plains; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Committal was private.

Susan Lynch
Ocean Gate resident Susan Ballam Lynch made her transition on Aug. 4.
Susan spent her final hours in her home joking, telling stories, and singing with her daughters and grandchildren.
A celebration of her life, which began in Charleston, W. Va., will be held on Fri. Aug. 10 at 10 a.m., at Christ Episcopal Church, 415 Washington St., Toms River.
Susan was the cherished daughter of the late Myrtle Gillespie and Sydney Ballam, and beloved wife of the late Ray Lynch.
She is survived by her daughters, Cherie Lynch-Conway, of Clinton, Terri Lynch, of Belmar, and Kathleen Lynch, of Bethesda, Md; their husbands, Bill Conway, John Fenimore, and Robert MacDonald; grandchildren, Laura and Matthew Fenimore, Dayna Lynch, Kyle and Kristen Alpaugh; grandson-in-law, Derek Lamberton; her cats, Nicky, Tally and Lil’Boy; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other loved ones.

David “Butch” Wolfe
Wall resident David “Butch” Wolfe, passed away Wednesday, July 25, at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, with his family by his side.
He was 67 years old.
Butch was proud to have worked for Hinck’s Turkey Farm for 50 years, as a manager for the Wall store, and a processing consultant at the turkey farm
He was also a co-owner of Kitch and Kaboodle, in Ocean Grove, along with his wife, Theresa, and two daughters and son-in-law, Amelia, Theresa and David.
Butch’s life evolved around his children and their accomplishments, with a source of great pride. He loved gardening, camping, and antiquing. Another one of his joys was riding his motorcycle.
Butch was looking forward to his first grandchild, a girl, Samarra Pirrong, due to be born in October. He enjoyed the company of his companion and faithful friend, “Butchie.”
Butch was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Lillian Wolfe; two brothers, John and Herb Wolfe; and three sisters, Lillian Murphy, Irene Kauffman, and Helen Wolfe.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Theresa DeBenedictis Wolfe, of Wall; two daughters and a son-in-law, Amelia Wolfe, of Vernon, and Theresa Wolfe Pirrong, and her husband, David Pirrong, of Wall. He is also survived by four brothers, Edward and Maryellen Wolfe, of California, Clyde and Anna Wolfe, of Indiana, Russell Wolfe, of Tennessee, and Clarence and Beverly Wolfe, of Florida; two sisters, Effie Maguire, of Freehold, and Ruth Wolfe, of Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Burial
was private.

Walter Hansen
Wall resident Walter “Dick” Richard Hansen, “a big man with an even bigger heart” died peacefully at home early Sunday morning, on Aug. 5.
He was 70 years old.
Mr. Hansen proudly served his country as an air traffic controller for the U.S. Air Force.
His decorated career included a tour in Vietnam, before he retired, in 1976.
He was a member of St. Catharine’s Roman Catholic Church, in Spring Lake. He was a 1955 graduate of Manasquan High School.
Born in Long Branch, he lived at the Jersey Shore for the last 40 years. His parents, John and Adele Hansen, and his brother, John M. Jr., of Northport, Maine, predeceased him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Georgene “Gigi” [Reilly] of 51 years; sons, Walter Richard Jr., of Belmar, and Jon Michael and his wife, Betsy, of Lake Como; and daughter, Karen Elizabeth Graff and her husband, Michael, of Robbinsville.
He is also survived by his brother, Thomas L. Hansen and his wife, Gloria, of Brick; sister-in-law, Ellen Hall and her husband, Jack, of Spring Lake; four grandchildren, David, Jessica, and Laura Hansen and Samantha Graff; two great grandchildren, Kaiden and Alex; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial
will be celebrated today at 9:30 a.m. at St Catharine’s Roman Catholic Church, in Spring Lake. Burial
will be at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, in Sea Girt.

Leo E. Connor
Boca Raton, Fla. resident Leo E. Connor, formerly of Spring Lake, a well-known educator of deaf children and Emeritus of the Lexington Center for the Hearing Impaired of New York City, died of cancer on Aug. 2, at his home.
He was 85 years old.
Dr. Connor headed the multi-purpose agency of the Lexington Center, from 1968 to 1986. At his retirement, the agency served 15, 000 hearing impaired persons a year. Leo was adjunct professor of education at Teacher’s College, Columbia University, from 1970 to 1986, conducting advanced seminars and supervising administrative interns and doctoral students.
He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., where he attended parochial schools. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from La Salle University, in Philadelphia, earned a master’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh and a doctorate in educational administration at Teacher’s College, Columbia University.
His teaching career began in the secondary schools in Pittsburgh, continued in Philadelphia, and in 1951, advanced to the principalship of elementary schools, in Rockland County, N.Y. In 1954, he became the director of elementary education of the Clarkstown Central School District, in New City, N.Y. In 1957, he became educational director of the Lexington School for the Deaf, subsequently was promoted to assistant and associate superintendent, and in 1958, he assumed the title of executive director of the school.
His expansion into lifetime services for the hearing impaired began with the establishment of the Lexington Foundation, in 1978, the Lexington Mental and Spiritual Health Center, in 1980, the Lexington Center for Mental Health, in 1983, and an overall parent corporation, the Lexington Center for Services for the Hearing and Speech Impaired, in 1985. Dr. Connor retired in 1988.
He wrote and had published numerous articles and professional books. His retirement activities included chairman of the Zoning Board of Adjustment of Spring Lake, from 1986 to 1993, and chairman of the Administration Committee of the Parish Council of St. Catharine/St. Margaret’s churches in Spring Lake, from 1992 to 1996.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Partridge, whom he married
in 1952; four sisters, Ellen Willard, of Longwood, Fla., Catherine Gilfillen, of Alexandria, Va., Mary Brandt, of Warrington, Pa., and Margaret Peake, of Berlin, Md.; and many relatives and friends who will cherish his memory always.

Helen Mansfield
Ocean Township resident Helen Mansfield “Aunt” Helen, passed away on Saturday morning, July 14. She was a member of the Eastern Star, and the past Worthy Matron of the Lodge, in Wall.
She was 79 years old.
Helen was a native New Jerseyan and a longtime resident of Ocean Township. She was an active member of the Asbury Park Elks.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gerald.
Helen is survived by her sister, Dianna Ward, of Miami, Fla.; and cousins, Peggy Mansfield, of Neptune, Andrew and Georgia Murray, of Brick; nieces, Tammy Collins, of Tennessee, and Tracy Costello, of Florida; and nephew, Terry Ward, of Florida; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
A private memorial service and the scattering of her ashes will be held on a later date.
