Dominic Pagliaro
Toms River resident Dominic Angelo Pagliaro, M.D., formerly of Brielle and Sea Girt died Monday, Aug. 6. at home after a valiant battle with cancer.

He was 80 years old.

Dominic was born to proud Italian immigrant parents, Andre and Maria Pagliaro, and was the nephew of Joseph and Frances D’Allesandro.

Dominic graduated from St. Joseph’s University and went on to receive his M.D. from Hahnemann School of Medicine.

He served his country as a captain in the U.S. Air Force and later made his home at the Jersey Shore. Dominic was a pioneer in Orthopedic Surgery and one of the first Orthopedic Surgeons in Ocean County. He lived his life passionately healing and helping others.

Dominic could light up a room with his million dollar smile and engaging conversation. He will be truly missed with great affection and love by many.

Dominic is survived by his beloved Carolyn, his loving children Dr. Andre and his wife Kristina, Pamela Esq. and her husband James Bress, Brenda Esq. and her husband Dr. Waden Emery III, Gina Quigley, his beloved step children Ted and Susan MacArthur and Scott and Jamie MacArthur. Also surviving are two loving cousins Mario DiGiulio and Roseanna Ronconi and fourteen grandchildren which he adored. The family gives special thanks to Miss Woneta McCullogh for her kind and gentle touch and for Catie’s Saturdays with Dominic.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and Friday from 8:30 to 9 a.m., at “The Family Owned” Carmona-Bolen Home for Funerals, 412 Main St, . Toms River, 08753, followed by a 9:15 a.m. funeral mass at St. Lukes’ R.C. Church, in Toms River.

Thomas Pizio Jr.
Manasquan resident Thomas Pizio Jr. passed away at home, on Tuesday, July 31.

He was 69 years old.

Born in Plainfield, Tom grew up in Green Brook, and raised his family in Piscataway, before retiring and moving permanently to Manasquan.

Tom is a graduate of Dunellen High School and Juniata College. He worked for over 40 years at Absolute Fire Protection Company, in South Plainfield, retiring as president in 2005, and was involved in many organizations: the American Society of Safety Engineers, the Association of Industrial Fire Chiefs, the National Emergency Equipment Dealers Association, and the NJ Career Chiefs Association.

After purchasing a summer home in Manasquan in 1991, he became very involved in this community as a trustee of the Manasquan Beach Improvement Association, a member of the Manasquan Fishing Club, the Squan Village Historical Society, the Manasquan First Night Committee and Manasquan Seniors. Tom’s favorite things were golfing, gardening, photography and watching his grandchildren play on the beach.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Stephenson Pizio; his son, Thomas III; his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Brad Whiting; his grandsons, Stephen and Joseph; his brother, Mike; his mother-in-law, Mary Stephenson; his sisters-in-law, Elaine and Joel Schnitter, Mary Ann and Maury Connors, and Jamie Stephenson; and 13 wonderful nieces and nephews and their families, as well as many good friends.

Thomas W. Birdsall
Howell resident Thomas W. Birdsall passed away on Sunday, Aug. 5, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. He leaves behind many loved ones, including family in Brielle, Wall and Sea Girt.

He was 79 years old.

Mr. Birdsall was a member of the first class to graduate from Ardena School, in Howell Township, and was a 1946 graduate of Freehold High School. He attained a postgraduate degree at Pennington School, Pennington, in 1947. He graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, in 1951, with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering.

Mr. Birdsall served in the Naval Reserves at Lakehurst, where his skill at operating farm equipment as a youth led to many assignments to move blimps on the ground, in and out of hangars.

From 1951 until his death, Mr. Birdsall was employed as a civil engineer and land surveyor. First he was employed by his father, Claude W. Birdsall. In 1955, he and his brothers, Howard C. and James E. Birdsall, founded the Birdsall Corporation, Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, South Belmar. Mr. Birdsall served as secretary of the Birdsall Corporation until 1967.

In 1967, Mr. Birdsall began his own firm in Wall Township, which later was known as Birdsall Gerken and Dolan. In 1988, he returned to employment at Birdsall Engineering, in South Belmar, and was still employed by the company, in Eatontown, until his death.

During his career, Mr. Birdsall served as engineer for many Shore area municipalities, including Allentown, Brielle, Colts Neck, Farmingdale, Millstone, Neptune Township., Roosevelt, Upper Freehold and Wall. He also was engineer for the Township of Neptune Sewerage Authority. He was known for his professionalism and unassailable integrity.

Mr. Birdsall designed many public works projects in the Shore area, such as the first ground level rubber lined potable water reservoir with a floating cover in Monmouth County, for Wall Township, and the largest elliptical reinforced concrete pipe storm sewer system in New Jersey, for Neptune Township. He designed several sewage collection systems in Brielle, Shark River Hills and Wall Township. Two of his earliest projects were the elevated potable water storage tanks in Farmingdale and Allentown.

Mr. Birdsall was a registered professional engineer, land surveyor, professional planner and certified municipal engineer in New Jersey. He was a past president of the New Jersey Society of Municipal Engineers and of its Monmouth Chapter. He was past president of the Consulting Engineers Council of New Jersey [CEC] and of the NJ State Board of Professional Planners. He was a fellow with the American Consulting Engineers Council. He chaired the committee that prepared the first Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Standards for the State of Jersey.

Mr. Birdsall lived his entire life on the family farm in Howell Township and raised Christmas trees there. He enjoyed boating all his life and spent many weekends sailing on Barnegat Bay with family and friends. He was an avid golfer and a long time member of Manasquan River Golf Club.

Mr. Birdsall was a member of the First United Methodist Church, of Farmingdale; past president of Farmingdale Kiwanis Club and past Master of the Farmingdale Grange.

Mr. Birdsall was predeceased by his wife, Kathryn Ketcham Birdsall, in 2003; his father and mother, Claude W. and Helen C. Birdsall, of Sea Girt; and three brothers, Howard C., C. Robert and James E. Birdsall.

He is survived by his beloved companion, Margaret Johnston, of Brielle; his sister, Verna B. Newman, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his daughter, Barbara L. Birdsall, of Wall; his son and daughter-in-law, Douglas R. and Mary Birdsall, of Sea Girt, and two grandchildren, Martin Thomas Birdsall and Anna Mary Birdsall, of Sea Girt, many nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Visiting will be today at Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road [Route 524], Freehold Township, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at the funeral home tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 10, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Hamilton Cemetery, Neptune.

Eleanor Johnson
Lakewood resident Eleanor Louise McKay Johnson passed away on Thursday, Aug. 2, at the Meridian Hospice at Ocean Medical Center, Brick, after a gallant four year battle with cancer. She leaves behind many loved ones, including family in Manasquan.

She was 85 years old.

She was born on July 4, 1922, in Newark, and grew up in Somerville, graduating from Somerville High School. She moved to the Shore area in 1955, and later to the Four Seasons, Lakewood, in 1995.

For 25 years, Mrs. Johnson was employed by the Township of Toms River Board of Education, retiring as the accounting supervisor, in 1992. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, of Toms River, and also participated in various clubs and activities, at Four Seasons.

She was predeceased by her parents, William and Myrtle McKay; her husband, Kenneth R. Johnson; her sister, Bette Russell; and two brothers, Louis and Kenneth Earl McKay.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Virginia S. and Wade Hill, of Manasquan; two grandchildren, Beth A. Carbone and her husband, Ralph, of Howell, and Donald F. Hill and his wife, Michelle, of Brick; two great-grandchildren, Katherine Rose and Ralph Joseph “R.J.” Carbone; four sisters, Dorothy Schurr and her husband, Joseph, of Venice, Fla., Irene Saley, of Florida, Helen Huleatt, of Middlesex, and Gladys Roche and her husband, James, of Ruckersville, Va.; and by many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

As an expression of sympathy, contributions may be made in her memory, to the First United Methodist Church, 129 Chestnut St., Toms River, 08753.

Interment was held at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold.

The Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, of Point Pleasant, was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert C. Olsen
Richland, Wash. resident Robert Clarence Olsen, formerly of Spring Lake Heights and Sea Girt, passed away on Aug. 3.

He was 90 years old.

Robert was born in Seaside Park, on August 19, 1916, to Claus John Olsen and Petra Skarbovik Olsen. The family resided in Ship Bottom until moving to Spring Lake Heights, where Robert graduated Manasquan High School, in 1937.

Robert attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kingspoint, joined the Merchant Marines during the war and sailed in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and the Pacific. He was wounded by friendly fire while in the Pacific. After the war, he was commissioned into the U.S. Naval Reserve where he served until the mid 1960, before being retired as a Second Lieutenant. He held his Masters unlimited tonnage pilot’s license for sea going vessels.

Immediately following the war, he worked at Sperry Gyroscope as an electronic technician, then went to work for the U.S. Army Signal Corp in Fort Monmouth, for 25 years, before retiring in 1982. Some of his notable activities in the this position included the study of lightning suppression in Flagstaff, Ariz., in 1966, installation of security sensors around the Olympic village for the 1980 Olympics, in Lake Placid, N.Y., and setting up detector systems in various locations throughout New Jersey to detect midnight dumping operations.

In 1947, he married Anne Karsnak, in Perth Amboy. He lived in Carteret, while building his house in Sea Girt, with his father and brother.

In November, 1952, they had a son, Khris Bob Olsen. The family moved to Sea Girt, in 1956, where he resided there until moving to Richland, in 2005, to be with his family.

He was an active member of the congregation at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, in Manasquan. He was superintendent of the Sunday School for 40 years and a church councilman.

For enjoyment in retirement, he loved to travel visiting Europe and Scandinavia several times, skiing, piloting and flying private aircraft, playing golf, and drinking good red wine with his close friends. He was a former partner in Seth Ryan Winery, which he enjoyed the wine making process from grape crushing to bottling the wine. He loved wine, women, and roses! He loved to party.

Robert is predeceased by his wife, Anne Olsen; his brothers, William, Oscar, and Charles; and his sister, Louise Morris. He is also survived by his sister, Pearl Strohmenger; his son, Khris B. Olsen; daughter-in-law, Christine B. Olsen; granddaughter, Jessica Ann Olsen; and grandson, Seth Christopher Olsen.

Donations may be made to Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice, 2108 W. Entiat Ave., Kennewick, WA 99336, or, your local Hospice Chapter, in Robert’s name.

The family will have a memorial service at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, in Manasquan, at a later date.

Audrey L. Harris
Audrey L. Harris, of Jackson, formerly of Spring Lake, passed away Sunday at Care One in Jackson.

She was born in Spring Lake and worked at R & S Strauss in Brick for nine years before becoming assistant manager of Middlebrook Cleaners in Ocean for 11 years, retiring in 1992. Audrey had been an avid member of the Orient Baptist Church in Laurelton for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband Jesse in 1995 and her grandson Keith in 1983 and is survived by her sons, Dr. Ronald K. Harris and his wife Helen, James J. Harris and his wife Nadine, Gerald B. Harris and his wife Brenda, nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.

The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Keith Harris to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center at PO Box 27106 NY, NY 10087-7106 or at mskcc.org.

Justin Bals
Justin Bals, age 33 of Brick Township, formerly of Brielle died July 11.

Justin was born Oct. 15, 1976. He received a bachelors of science in finance from Monmouth University in 2000 and a masters of science from Richard Stockton College in occupational therapy in December 2009. After graduation from Monmouth he worked on Wall Street and enjoyed living in New York City. Justin decided to return to college and pursued a career in hand therapy. He was employed by Accent On Hands. Justin loved surfing, mountain biking, yoga, reading, working out and spending time with his friends and family.

He was a beloved son of Ed and Carol Bals of Brick Township; brother of Ed Bals and wife Keri of Portland, Maine; brother of Germaine Jordan, wife of Michael of West Milford; brother of Jeanette Baker, wife of Mark of Ellicott City, Md.; brother of Kevin Bals, husband of Lilly of Brick Township; brother of Gordon Bals, husband of Dawn of Birmingham, Ala.; brother of Mary Claire Brennan of Colts Neck; and was the uncle of 21 nieces and nephews.

The memorial service will be held at St. Martha’s R.C., Herbertsville Rd., Point Pleasant, Thursday, July 15, at 11 a.m.

The family will be receiving condolences prior to mass at 10 a.m. at St. Martha’s Church.
