Deborah E. Ralph
Deborah E. Ralph, 55, of Toms River, with family in Spring Lake Heights, found peace on Thursday, April 29, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, after a long heroic battle with cancer.
Beloved daughter, wife, mother, sister, friend and teacher, Debbie’s brilliant intellect, sharp wit and gregarious personality awed and endeared her to everyone she met.
Born in Newark in 1954 to Frank and Barbara Mickowski, Debbie spent her early childhood with her brothers Frank and John and her cousins. Growing up in a multi-lingual household, she quickly demonstrated a precocious talent for languages learning her mother’s native German dialect before the age of five.
Early on, Debbie knew she wanted to be a teacher. With her natural gift for languages, she pursued a dual major at Central College in Pella, Iowa, studied abroad for two years in Germany, Austria and Spain and graduated with a BA and honors.
After more than 30 years as a foreign language teacher and making a difference in the lives of countless others, Debbie retired from Toms River High School North this April. Looking back, Debbie said how fortunate and happy she was with her chosen career, something few can say. A member of the Toms River Hall of Fame Board serving as Recording Secretary, a Building Representative for Toms River Education Association for Toms River North, and teacher of English as a Second Language, Debbie’s dedication to her community and students was tireless and has left an indelible mark on them.
Devastating in Scrabble, Debbie loved all word and trivia combat. Ever ready with a cavalcade of puns, she enjoyed elevating the level of conversation and storytelling. She loved to experience different cultures sharing all she explored with those around her. Her favorite places to visit were the Jersey Shore and Vermont. Most of all she enjoyed sharing the simple pleasures of life with her friends and family…a good book in a cozy nook, a hot cup of cocoa by a crackling fire, a lively conversation over a delicious meal.
She is survived by her husband, James Ralph, her mother, Barbara [Kirch] Mickowski, daughters Susan Ralph and Kristen Alfonso, son-in-law Paul Alfonso, her brothers Frank Mickowski and John Mickowski, sister-in-law Helene Mickowski, granddaughter Meghan, as well as many aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and the best friends anyone could hope for.
