Mary Inez Lettieri
Mary Inez [de Castro] Lettieri, age 76, with family in Wall, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center on Feb. 17.

Inez, a resident of Neptune, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and raised in Montclair, and attended Lacordaire Academy before moving to Mercer County to raise her family. In her later years, she moved to Neptune to be near her extended family and the ocean.

Inez was one of seven children born to the late Esther and Edward de Castro. She married the late Walter R. Lettieri and had four children. Inez is survived by her sister Esther Marie [de Castro] Forest, and her husband Louis, of Manasquan; her brothers Peter, and his wife Gail of Georgetown, Ky.; John [Jack] of Manasquan; and James, and his wife Annie, of Winnetka, Ill. Inez was predeceased by her brothers David and Edward de Castro and is survived by her sister-in-law Cathy de Castro of Manahawkin. Inez will be remembered in the hearts of her four beloved children and their spouses, Lisa [Lettieri] and William Radcliffe of Burlington; Lori [Lettieri] and Douglas Pickford of Fairfax, Va.; Lynn Marie Lettieri of Fairless Hills, Pa.; and Walter Robert [Bob] and Lori [Maher] Lettieri of Morrisville, Pa. Inez was lovingly known as “Grammie Oreo” to her eight grandchildren Suzanne, Heather, Alexander, Megan, Jacqueline, James, Alexandrea, and Corey.

Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation service tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 26, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Orender Family Home, 2643 Old Bridge Road, in Manasquan. A “Celebration of Life” service will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 at St. Denis Church, Manasquan. Interment will be private.

Mildred Loprete Cherichello
Mildred Loprete Cherichello, 87, of Spring Lake Heights passed away Thursday, Feb.18, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

Born in Newark and raised in Hillside, Mildred resided in Cranford for 35 years before moving to Spring Lake Heights in 2000.

Mildred worked at the Purolator Company, Rahway. After this, Mildred had been employed as a member of the Planning Board for the city of Elizabeth.

She was predeceased by her husband Carmine in October 2002 and her brother John Loprete. Surviving are her children and their spouses, Peter J. and Kim Cherichello of Ewing, Jane and Thomas McGill of Belmar and Thomas J. Cherichello of Delaware, her brothers Martin Loprete of Howell, Louis and wife Martha Loprete of Edison, Peter and Lindy Loprete of Florida, her sister in law Elizabeth Loprete of Kennett Square, Pa. and her three cherished grandchildren, Joe and Lia Cherichello and D’Arcy McGill.

The O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of arrangements. Committal was in the Chapel at the NJ Veteran’s Cemetery, Arneytown.

Robert E. Sammons
Robert E. Sammons, with family in Manasquan, died on Feb. 14. He resided in Greenbriar Woodlands in Toms River for the last 11 years. He also resided in Marlboro, and for over 30 years in Shark River Hills, Neptune. He was born in Jersey City where he resided for his childhood. He was a dedicated and committed father, husband, uncle and grandfather. He served in the Armed Forces during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany. He played semi-professional football with the Jersey Generals and made his career as a technician at Geiger Ford/Sea Breeze Ford in Belmar and then later as director of parts and service at Sansone Ford in Neptune. He was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Giants, and served as a coach and mentor for girls softball teams and Pop Warner football. He was a founding member of the Red & Black Club and a member of the Shark River Hills Beach and Yacht Club.

He was predeceased by his son, Robert T. Sammons, and his wife Jane D. Sammons, and his companion of many years Lorraine DeFillippo.

He is survived by his three children, Deborah Sammons-Fikenstcher and her husband Joseph, Diane E. Sammons and her husband Thomas Savoth, Joseph J. DeFillippo and his wife Penny. Also, a sister-in-law Dorothea Davidson and a brother-in-law Robert Luttman, grandchildren Joshua, Erin and Timothy Fikenstcher, Jen and Kyle Alesio and Dennis DeFillippo.

O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of arrangements. Interment was at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Popcorn Park Zoo, Forked River.

Pauline Znaiden
Pauline [nee Pihura] Znaiden, 89 of Brielle crossed over into God’s light on Sunday Feb. 21, at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

She was born and raised in Jersey City. Pauline moved to Lakewood in 1957 and resided there until five years ago when she moved to Brielle. She was a ward clerk at Paul Kimball Hospital for 24 years. Pauline thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family.

Our much loved and adored Mom and beautiful Nana is survived by her son, Alexander P. Znaiden of Tokyo, Japan, her daughters Paula M. Grandin, Patricia A. Heward both of Henderson Nev., Nancy E. Clayton of Brielle and Mary J. Haus of Wall. Pauline is also survived by many cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was also predeceased by her husband of almost 40 years Alexander Znaiden in 1996 and a son Nicholas E. Znaiden in 2003.

Relatives and friends are invited to call today, Thursday Feb. 25 from 2 to 4, and 7 to 9 p.m. at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 26 at St. Denis Church, Manasquan. Interment will follow at St. Mary of the Lake Cemetery, Lakewood.

Clair Stillwell
Clair Stillwell, 86, of Manasquan, passed away Monday Feb. 22 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

Clair was born and raised in Spring Lake. She was a graduate of Manasquan High School. Clair worked at Spring Lake National Bank from 1941 to 1944 and then was employed by NJ Telephone Company from 1944 to 1947. She spent most of her life as a homemaker, taking care of her family and children. Clair enjoyed needlework and quilting.

Clair was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Willard Stillwell in 1988, and her son Thomas in 2009. She is survived by her daughter Susan Walker of Toms River. Clair is also survived by a sister Judith Reimer of Hampton, three grandchildren Corey Walker and his wife Kristy, of Manasquan, Theresa Jasperson of Tampa, Fla. and Marlo Stillwell of St. Petersburg, Fla; four great grandchildren Casey Walker, Christopher Bianchini, Jolina and Nicolette Jasperson; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Visistation will be Sunday, Feb. 28 at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan, from 1 to 4 p.m., with the funeral service at 3:30 p.m., here. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, PO Box 96011, Washington DC 20090-6011 or Educational Assistance Fund C/O First United Methodist Church of Toms River, 129 Chestnut Street, Toms River, NJ 08753.

R. Bernadine Haber
R. Bernadine Haber, with family in Manasquan, died Feb. 7 after a long illness. Born in Allentown, Pa., on Sept. 1, 1921, she resided there most of her life before moving to Toms River ten years ago.

She was predeceased by her parents Agnes and Anton Haber, siblings, Emma Haber, Laura Brandish, Hilda Haber, Helen Correll, Agnes Gehringer, Walter Haber, Elsie Wasser, Ruth Marsden and Carl Haber, her beloved brother.

Surviving are her daughter Jane Clarke Moran and her husband, Jim Moran of Normandy Beach, her son Carl [Cappy] Clarke of Orefield, Pa., seven grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was employed by Richard’s Sportswear Co. in Allentown for over 20 years before retiring. She was known for her wonderful sense of humor and love of Big Band music. We will miss her.

A private memorial service and interment will be conducted. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent, in Bernadine’s name, to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Scholarship Fund, C/O Sr. Jude Boyce, SSJ, 1212 1st Ave., Asbury Park NJ 07712.

The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, was in charge of arrangements.

Richard Douglas Wurfel Sr.
Richard Douglas Wurfel Sr., 87, of Brielle, died Friday, Feb. 12, at Burnt Tavern Manor in Brick.

Born in Elizabeth, he lived in Nutley and then Glen Ridge, where he served on the planning board. He and his wife of 64 years moved to the family home in Brielle 28 years ago.

He was a graduate of the Wooster School where he served as a senior prefect. He attended Amherst and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He was a graduate of Bucknell University. He loved bicycling and traveling.

He was a veteran of WWII, serving as a B-25 “Hump” pilot in the US Army Air Corps, 10th Air Force in the CBI theater, flying missions back and forth over the Himalaya Mountains from India to China.

Mr. Wurfel served as a senior vice president of Carteret Savings & Loan in Newark before retiring in 1988.

Mr. Wurfel was predeceased by his parents, Lester E. and Gertrude, his daughter, Anne Louise and his brother, Lester E. Jr. He is survived by his wife Janice, two sons, Richard Douglas Jr. and his wife Carolyn Holbrook of Windham, Maine, David Allyn of Point Pleasant, two grandchildren Kristen Anne and Ryan David of Maine and three great-grandchildren, Alec, Lillian and Kasey.

Interment was held in the Greenwood cemetery in Brielle, next to his daughter.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that interested friends make donations to their favorite charity.

The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, was in charge of arrangements.

Joseph A. Racioppi
Joseph A. Racioppi, of Manasquan, died Monday, Feb. 15, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, surrounded by loving family.

Born in New York City, Mr. Racioppi has resided in Manasquan for 56 years.

He was a veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Army. He was a graduate of Xavier High School and received a degree from Fordham University, The Bronx, N.Y., Class of 1947.

He was the owner/operator of Shore Bowling Center in Manasquan, for 20 years. He then became a self-employed financial advisor.

He was a long-time parishioner of St. Denis Catholic Church, Manasquan, where he once served as president of the St. Denis Seniors.

A Honorary Life member of the Knights of Columbus, Msgr. Welsh Council 3231, Manasquan, he was also a Fourth Degree member of the Msgr. John Baldwin Assembly.

A charter member of the Manasquan Elks, he also belonged to the VFW Post 1838. He was a past president and member of the Wall Township Board of Education. He was also a past member of the NY Athletic Club.

Joe enjoyed going to the Manasquan inlet, trips to Atlantic City and was an avid Mets fan.

He was predeceased by his son Joseph, Jr. in 2004 and his son-in-law Ronald Belka in 2005.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Janice Glatz Racioppi. Also surviving are three sons, John R. Racioppi, Point Pleasant, Jeffrey and wife Sherrie Racioppi, Flemington, Jimmy Racioppi, Manasquan and three daughters, Janice McMullen, Point Pleasant Boro, Judy Belka, Spring Lake Heights, Jeana and Wes Blakeslee, Wall, daughter-in-law, Mary Anne Racioppi Woodlands, Texas, a sister, Dorothy Salamone, Oakhurst, and grandchildren, Shauna, Jenny, Michael, Mark Racioppi; Jaimee, JP and Joe McMullen; Christopher and Nicholas Racioppi; Kristen and Elizabeth Belka; and Katie, Kara and John Blakeslee.

Entombment was held in St. Catharine Mausoleum. The O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Denis Church Restoration Fund.

Joann Coulter Rowe
Joann Coulter Rowe, of the Allenwood section of Wall Township, died peacefully at her home on Sunday morning, Feb. 21, succumbing after a short, valiant bout against cancer. Joann was born in Philadelphia and moved to Manasquan in 1936.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews Claudia Coulter, William Coulter, Michael Coulter and his wife Gail and Paul Coulter, together with numerous cousins and friends.

Joann graduated from Manasquan High School, class of 1948. She was employed as office manager for Commercial Credit Corporation, Asbury Park. She became active in many volunteer organizations.

Joann was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the Visiting Nurses Association when she was honored as the VNA Volunteer of the Year. Joann also worked at the VNA Thrift Shop for many years and served as the person in charge. As a member of the Squan Village Historical Society, Joann was the leader of many successful annual summer house tours. She was an active member of the B.P.O.E., Elks Lodge No. 2534, Auxiliary and was the hands-on manager of the monthly “Pancake Breakfasts” which pleased many pancake lovers. In addition to the many hats she wore, Joann was charter member of the Manasquan Junior Women’s Club. Any activity with which Joann was associated received her full and undivided attention.

Her love of gardening, birds and dogs were a large part of Joann’s life. In later years her vision deteriorated but she maintained her garden for the enjoyment of others. Her dogs were a large part of Joann’s life. “Rudy, ” “Rebecca, ” “Peppo” and “Saucer” were fortunate to have found homes with Joann.

An ideal hostess, Joann enjoyed entertaining. She was an excellent cook and delighted guests with her savory meals. To go along with the cuisines, Joann had side orders of outstanding stories. She had a fine knowledge of current as well as historical events. Her warm and bubbly personality delighted everyone as she spun her stories to her listeners. She welcomed everyone to her home with open arms and each person was made to feel special. Joann will be missed by all who knew her.

Joann’s body was donated to the University of Dentistry and Medicine of New Jersey.
