Jeanne Uhl
Jeanne Uhl, 78, of Marathon, Fla., and formally of Point Pleasant, passed away on Friday, Sept. 18, at Claremont Nursing Home, Point Pleasant.
Jeanne was born on June 30, 1931, in Copiague, Long Island, N.Y. She was a longtime resident of Point Pleasant, before retiring to Marathon, Fla., in 1987. She had recently returned to New Jersey in 2004.
Jeanne was a teacher in Point Pleasant and served the community in various capacities as chairwoman of the Recreation Commission and Board of Welfare; as Shore Communication served by Jersey Central Railroad; charter member and First Chairman of the Ocean County Transportation Board.
After moving to Marathon, Fla., on the Keys, in 1987 following her husband’s retirement, she continued to serve her new community as she had in Point Pleasant.
Jeanne was a member of the board of directors at the Fisherman’s Hospital from 1995 until her death, serving as president. She and her husband were very involved in the Marathon Yacht Club, serving as editor of her monthly and yearly publications. Jeanne also served as president on the Board of American Cancer Society.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank R. Uhl II, son Frank R. Uhl III, and daughter Susan Hull.
Jeanne is survived by her daughters, Ann Petronaci and Jessie Reeves, and their husbands, Darryl and Wallace, respectively; her brother, Jack Bunce; and seven grandchildren, Dianna and Daniel Petronaci, Michael and Christopher Uhl, and Robert, Amanda and Kelly Start. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Salvatore O. Carannante
Salvatore O. Carannante, 59, of Brick, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.
Mr. Carannante owned and operated Big Cheese Pizza in Glen Mills, Pa. He also owned and operated Sal’s Las Vegas Pizza in Point Pleasant Beach for many years, and Cohen’s Deli in Brick.
He was born in Italy and lived in Point Pleasant prior to moving to Brick 26 years ago. He loved his family, as they were the most important thing in his life. He was very traditional and loved gardening and making wine.
He was predeceased by his parents, Guiseppe and Emanuela Carannante, and a brother, Antonio.
Surviving are his wife, Maria Parascandolo Carannante; three sons and a daughter, Guiseppe, Luigi, Michael and Emanuela, all of Brick; two brothers, Vinny, of Brick, and Pat, of Point Pleasant; and two sisters, Anna Carannante and Angela Carannante, both of Italy.
Visitation was arranged by Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Highway 88, in Brick. A Mass of Christian Burial
was held on Thursday, Sept. 24 at St. Martha’s Roman Catholic Church, Point Pleasant, followed by entombment at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall Township.
Brian S. Spincola
Brian S. Spincola, 39, of Point Pleasant, passed away suddenly Sunday, Sept. 20.
Born in Point Pleasant, he was a lifelong area resident and graduate of the Point Pleasant Borough High School. Brian worked in the construction trade and enjoyed fishing and surfing.
He was predeceased by his father, Vincent Spincola.
Surviving are his mother, Corine [Gilberti] Spincola, of Lakewood, and his sister, Laurice Spincola, of Jackson.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road Interment
took place at Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle.
Anne G. Schenck
Anne G. Schenck, a resident of Brick, formerly of Bay Head, and retired for a period in Naples, Fla., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 15, holding the hand of her beloved daughter, Suzanne, and dressed great to the end.
Anne was born March 24, 1918.
She was affectionately known as Annie to her family and friends. She will be remembered as a strong woman who loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Annie stood up and made a difference when her children hit their personal shoals. She always encouraged them to persevere when life got difficult, with her famous words, “Everything will be fine, ” or, “Don’t worry, it will come to you.”
She graduated from The Women’s College of North Carolina in Greensboro, N.C., in 1939. Anne, known as The Barefoot Peddler, had antique shops in Bay Head and Point Pleasant over the years, and was a longtime fixture at the Point Pleasant Antique Emporium.
Anne loved to travel and found great excitement in visiting new places and cruising throughout the world. Her travels included traveling halfway around the world to celebrate Mother’s Day in 1995, with her son, Kenneth, on Kwajalein Atoll, in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. She loved chili, the Atlanta Braves, crossword puzzles, men in uniform, dressing in style, finding a good deal, and being surrounded by people she loved.
She was predeceased by her husband, George, in 1977 and his son, George Jr.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth Boyle, of Pinehurst, N.C.; her daughter, Suzanne B. Van Schoick, and her husband, John, of Bay Head; her son, J. Brewster Schenck, and his wife, Cheri, of Poway, Calif.; and George’s children, Paul Schenck and his wife Uta, of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and Agatha Forsyth and her partner Diana, of Purdum, Neb.
Also surviving 16 sixteen grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
“Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, Braves hat on your head, martini in one hand, a handsome gentleman and cruise tickets in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming, ‘WooHoo, what a ride!’”
A private family celebration of life will be held Monday, Sept. 21, in Bay Head.
James F. Karau
James F. Karau, 73, died Monday, Sept. 21, at Meridian Rehabilitation Center, Brick.
He was born in Newark, and lived in Little Egg Harbor before moving to Point Pleasant Beach 13 years ago.
Mr. Karau was a janitor for Wall High School, where he worked for 27 years before retiring in 2001. He was also known as “Candy Man” or “Janitor Jim” to his students and fellow co-workers. He never missed a day of work, or any school or sports events. He was loved by many people, he was very giving and caring, and will never be forgotten and always remembered. He was also employed at American Can Manufacturing Company. He loved to fish on the Norma K.
Mr. Karau was predeceased by his parents, Fredrick and Florence Karau.
He is survived by his niece, Michelle Prado, of Tampa, Fla., and his very close friend, Yulia Barker, of Point Pleasant Beach.
Visitation was arranged by the Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, 812 Arnold Ave., Point Pleasant Beach.
Cremation will be private.

Jane L. Gourley
Jane L. [Slockbower] Gourley, 80, of Point Pleasant Beach, died on Saturday, Sept. 19, at her home.
She was born and raised in Lake Hopatcong, and lived in Succasunna, before moving to Point Pleasant Beach 35 years ago.
Mrs. Gourley was a homemaker. She was a parishioner of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Bay Head. She was a member of the Deborah Hospital, Tradewinds Chapter, of Lavallette. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She was predeceased by her son, William T. Gourley, in 1989, and by her husband of 37 years, Eugene “Geno” Gourley, in July.
She is survived by two sons, Gregory G. and his wife, Dora, of Point Pleasant Beach; and James J. and his wife, Terri, of Manasquan; seven grandchildren, Dillon, Christopher, Katelyn, Erin, Max, Craig and Madison; one great-grandchild, Angel; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements were under the care of O’Brien Funeral Home, Brick. A funeral service was held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, in Bay Head, on Wednesday. Burial
followed, at White Lawn Cemetery, in Point Pleasant.

Minna Herzig Memorial
A memorial service honoring former Point Pleasant Beach resident Minna Herzig will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, at 729 Arnold Ave. in Point Pleasant Beach.
Ms. Herzig was a member of the church, active in its choir, secretary of the United Methodist Women organization, and served as Sunday School superintendent for several decades.
Ms. Herzig was active in many church events and was a generous benefactor.
The church fellowship room has been named in her honor, and is known as Herzig Hall.
Ms. Herzig also worked for the public school system in Point Pleasant Beach, as a teacher at G. Harold Antrim Elementary School for many years, before retiring in the 1980s.
Her home in Point Pleasant Beach reflected her love of flowers, with many gardens.
She was an avid outdoor camper.
She was devoted to her sister and family, who reside in Manasquan.
Minna Herzig lived simply, loved generously, cared deeply and spoke kindly to everyone she met.
Everyone is invited to come an join in the celebration of her life.

Daniel A. Capano
Lake Como resident Daniel A. Capano died Tuesday, Feb. 3 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
He was 68 years old.
Born in Fairview, he has lived in Lake Como for 15 years. He was a truck driver and owned his own limousine service.
Surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.
