Nancy Jean Lawler
Avon-by-the-Sea resident Nancy Jean Lawlor died Tuesday, Feb. 3 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
She was 67 years old.
Mrs. Lawlor was a registered nurse for the State of New Jersey until she retired in 2002. She loved the beach and was a beach badge checker on Sylvania Avenue in Avon. Born and raised in Jersey City, she came to the borough 30 years ago.
Surviving is her loving husband of 43 years, Joseph A., two daughters and sons-in-law Janet and Timothy Sinkewicz of Lawrenceville, Kathleen and Patrick Westhoven of Wall, sister Janet Meerbott of Tinton Falls, five grandchildren Grace, Kathleen and Teagan Elizabeth Sinkewicz, and Maeve Katherine, Kayla Elizabeth, and Sean Patrick Westhoven. She also leaves her lifelong best friend Trudy Fitzpatrick and her family.
Visiting will be on Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Route 35, Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial
will be offered Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Elizabeth RC Church, Avon. Internment will be private. Donations may be made to her name to the Avon First Aid Squad, PO Box 3, Avon 07717.
Barbara Jewel [Higgins] Martin
Barbara Jewel [Higgins] Martin, who has family in Manasquan, died Sunday, Feb. 1 in Riverside Hospital.
She was 83 years old.
Born on Feb. 23, 1925 in Harrison County, Mo., she moved to Ohio in 1943 and lived in Columbus, Johnstown and Gahanna. In Columbus, she became a lifelong member of East Columbus Christian Church and was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Barbara was predeceased by her daughter, Linda Lee Pleasnick, and her grandson, Gregory Ball.
She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, LeRoy Martin of Columbus, Ohio. She is also survived by devoted sons Michael Joe [Marlene] Martin of Manasquan, Richard Allen [Dianna] Martin of New Albany, Ohio, and Philip Daniel [Ann] Martin Sr. of Dublin, Ohio; grandchildren, Caren [Michael] Bauer of Manasquan, Elizabeth [Bruce] Barker of Wall, Erinn Martin of Lindenwold, Minden [David] Jennings of Jacksonville, Fla., Thomas [Tami] Martin of Cincinnati, Ohio, Tara [Michael] Leonard of New Albany, Ohio, Daniel “Danny” [Kimberly] Martin Jr. of Kenosha, Wis., Andrew Martin and Katherine Martin of Dublin, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Samantha and Catherine Bauer of Manasquan, Rebecca Martin of Lindenwold, Braden and Allison Jennings of Jacksonville, Zachary and Megan Leonard of New Albany, and Audrey Martin of Kenosha.
Family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6 at Schoedinger Northeast Chapel, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd., Gahanna, Ohio 43230. Additional visiting 12-1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the funeral home with funeral service beginning at 1 p.m. Chaplain Richard G. Westinghouse will be officiating. A private family burial in Mifflin Township will be held at a later date.

Gerard Edward “Gerry” Boyan
Bay Head resident Gerard “Gerry” Edward Boyan, who has family in Spring Lake, died Friday, Jan. 30 in his home.
He was 78 years old.
Born in Fort Lee, Gerry lived in Redding, Conn. and summered in Bay Head before moving to Bay Head permanently in 1991. Gerry was an inventor with Perkin-Elmer, Norwalk, Conn., where he created four patents and he worked for Arinc Corporation in Fort Monmouth until his death. His latest invention was just patented on Thursday, Jan. 29.
Gerry served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He played competitive badminton at Connecticut State where he held high rankings. Gerry was a very creative and artistic person; he loved to carve bird decoys. Gerry was known to be a quiet man with a wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed walking on the beach and finding driftwood, as well as gardening. He was ahead of his time environmentally and loved to find new ways of conserving the environment.
Gerry was predeceased by his sister, Catharine Vanbemmel.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 48 years, Emily F. Boyan, a son Joseph M. Boyan and his wife Laurie, and three grandchildren: Garret, Ryan and Joshua, with whom he cherished and loved to root for at their sporting events. He also leaves behind three siblings, Regina Boyan, William L. Boyan and his wife Tia, and Eileen Bray, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visiting will be on Friday, Feb. 6 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. A Funeral Mass will be offered Saturday, 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, Pt. Meredith Hemphill Jr.
Bethlehem, Pa. resident Meredith Hemphill Jr., formerly of Spring Lake, died Monday, Feb. 2 in his home.
He was 77 years old.
Born on Oct. 12, 1931 in Spring Lake, he was the son of the late Meredith and Katharine [Dilworth] Hemphill. Meredith was the beloved husband of Beverly Hemphill. They celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary last Feb. 6.
Meredith graduated from R.P.I. with a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering in 1953. That same year, he joined Bethlehem Steel’s management training program. He left to serve the next two years as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. At the time of his discharge in 1955, he was a company commander with the rank of first lieutenant. Meredith rejoined Bethlehem Steel in 1955 as an engineer in the Johnstown plant’s blast furnace department. Two years later he entered the University of Michigan Law School and in 1959 graduated with a doctor of jurisprudence degree.
From 1959 to 1967, he was an attorney with the law firm of Cravath, Swaine and Moore in New York City. In 1967, Meredith moved his family to Bethlehem and joined Bethlehem Steel’s law department as an attorney. He was promoted to Assistant General Counsel in 1973 and Assistant General Counsel and Assistant Secretary in 1977. Later, he was appointed Deputy General Counsel and Assistant Secretary for the Law Department. Meredith retired in 1996.
He was a member of Saucon Valley Country Club and the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem. Meredith was an avid golfer, reader, N.Y. Giants football fan, and he loved the opera.
Meredith will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Beverly; daughter Mary K. Markley and her husband Andrew of Grove City, Pa.; sons M. Scott Hemphill and his wife Kris of Bethlehem, Geoffrey G. Hemphill and his wife Tracy of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mark A. Hemphill and his wife Stacey of Bethlehem; sisters Jean Pugh and her husband George of Baton Rouge, La., and Shirley Jessup and her husband Harlan of Newtown, Conn.; brother Kent Hemphill and his wife Ann of Rochester, N.Y.; and nine grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held Sunday, Feb. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Long Funeral Home, 500 Linden Street, Bethlehem. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the First Presbyterian Church, 2344 Center St., Bethlehem, with a luncheon reception to follow at the Hotel Bethlehem. Burial

Frank J. Posella
Avon resident Frank J. Posella died Wednesday, Jan. 28 in his home.
He was 85 years old.
Born in East Orange, he lived in Franconia Township, Pa., before moving to Avon 23 years ago.
He was a pioneer in precast concrete and was the owner and vice-president of Penn-Cast Products. He was a member and communicant at the Church of St. Elizabeth in Avon. He was an Eagles fan, a good husband, father and a good guy.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Frances, one son Frank A. Posella and his wife Maureen of Bridgewater, three daughters, Victoria Posella of Wall, Jayne Lee and her husband Wayne of York, Pa., Andrea M. Cooper and her husband Thomas of Wall, one brother Anthony F. Posella of Newtown, Pa., two sisters Eleanor Federici of Tinton Falls, Constance Bonadias of Springfield, and five grandchildren, Elizabeth and Stephanie Posella, Maureen and Joshua Morrison and Adrianne and Elaina Cooper and a host of nephews and nieces.
Visitation was held at the Reilly Funeral Home, 801 D St., Belmar. A Mass of Christian Burial

John F. Cahill Jr.
Brick resident John F. Cahill Jr., who has family in Belmar, died Tuesday, Feb. 3 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.
He was 82 years old.
Born in New York City, N.Y., he lived there and Neptune prior to moving to Brick 10 years ago.
He was employed as a salesman with Reingold of Brooklyn, N.Y. He also was an operating engineer and member of International Operating Engineers Union, New York, and a bartender in the financial district in New York for many years.
He served with the United States Navy during World War II.
John was a communicant of St. Martha’s RC Church, Point Pleasant, and was a member of the Greenbriar Kiwanis Club.
He was predeceased by his wife Rose in 2000.
John is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Donna Cahill of Maryland; three step children, Barbara and her husband Peter Kalemis of New York, Carol Loguirato of New York, and Joe Loguirato and his wife Regina of Belmar; two sisters, Edna Doscher of Virginia and Irene Hoefling of Florida; three grandchildren, Jessica, Allison and John Bryan and three step-grandchildren, Joseph, Stephen and Bridgette.
A visitation will be held Friday, 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Route 88, Brick. Interment
will follow at the N.J. Veteran’s Cemetery, Arneytown.
Iona Francis Van Brunt
West Belmar resident Iona Francis Van Brunt died Sunday, Feb. 1 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
She was 89 years old.
Born in Irvington, Mrs. Van Brunt lived all her adult life in the Jersey Shore area.
Iona was predeceased by her parents, William and Clara Aten, her loving husband Harry W. Van Brunt, and her son Harry Van Brunt Jr.
She is survived by her devoted children, Clara Sorensen, Frederick Van Brunt and his wife Sharon, Sue Kirchgessner and her husband Joseph, and William Van Brunt. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and her favorite nephew Daniel Aten of North Carolina.
Iona was known and loved for her smile, kindness, love of family and sharp wit. At her request, internment will be private. All arrangements are under the direction of the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, Wall.
Katherine Normile Mylod
Summit and Spring Lake resident Katherine Normile Mylod died Saturday, Jan. 17.
She was 103 years old.
She was born in Chicago in 1905 along with her identical twin, Margaret Normile McLoughlin, who passed away in 2004. Katherine lived most of her first 88 years in Brooklyn, N.Y. She moved to Summit ten years after her husband, Charles J. Mylod’s, death.
Lala, as she was known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was a woman of unshakable faith and deep spirituality. After graduating from St. Joseph’s College for Women in 1927 and a short teaching career, she devoted the remainder of her fruitful years to her beloved husband and children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She possessed an uncompromising commitment to the principles of her faith, sharing her love for the Lord by a life of quiet witness. Those who knew Katherine appreciated her captivating wit, innate integrity, intelligence and serenity, often describing her as “such a gracious lady.”
She established enduring relationships with all of her offspring in an intensely individual way. In a world that increasingly longs for and needs deep and healthy loving relationships, family members are forever blessed by her example.
At Katherine’s 100th birthday celebration Mass, over 130 members of her immediate family, including nieces, nephews and their families were there to wish her well. They continuously flocked to her side right up to the moment of her death.
Katherine maintained homes in Summit where she was a daily communicant at St. Teresa of Avila RC Church and Spring Lake where she was a daily communicant at St. Catharine.
Her husband, Charles, preceded her in death 25 years ago.
Katherine is survived by nine children: Charles J. Mylod Jr. [Elizabeth M.] of Oradell, Katherine M. Mainzer [Robert L.] of Aberdeen, Marion M. Fitzgerald [Anthony W.] of Shrewsbury, Robert J. Mylod [Monica M.] of Manasquan, James P. Mylod [Linda H.] of Anderson, S.C., twins Rosemary T. Mylod of Summit and Spring Lake Heights, who was her constant companion and tender caregiver, and Eleanor M. Culver [Craig] of Chatham, and twins Carol M. King [Henry B.] of Kensington, Md., and Brian J. Mylod [Kathleen C.] of Canton, Conn. She is also survived by 34 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations to either St. Saviour’s Parish, 611 8th Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y. 11215 or St. Joseph’s College for Women, 245 Clinton Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y. 11215. Arrangements were under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.
Emma A. Haefcke
Toms River resident Emma Nana” A. Haefcke, who has family in Spring Lake, died Monday, Jan. 26 in Waterford Assisted Living in Wall.
She was 92 years old.
Mrs. Haefcke was an executive secretary at McGraw Hill in New York City before retiring in 1981. She was a member of the Silver Ridge Garden Club, Women’s Club, Single’s Club and Home Owners Association in Toms River. Born in West New York, she was raised in Union City and lived in North Bergen before moving to Toms River.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Sr., in 1987.
Surviving are her son Paul Jr. of Port Monmouth, daughter Irma H. Geib and her husband William Robert Sr. of Spring Lake, and six grandchildren William Robert Jr., Matthew and his wife Tara, Lisa and her husband Greg, Adrianne and her husband Nathaniel, Steven and Tessa. She also leaves her three great-grandchildren Garrett, Liam and Ethan, and her best friend Catharine Bataille of Toms River.
Visitation was held at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Route 35, Wall. Services were held at the conclusion of evening viewing hours. Internment was private. Donations may be made in her name to the Monmouth and Ocean County Food Bank, Route 66, Neptune 07753.
