John J. Villani
Greenbriar 1 of Brick resident John J. Villani, formerly of Spring Lake and Brielle, died Friday, Feb. 20 at Meridian Hospice, Brick.

He was 77 years old.

He was raised in East Orange and lived in North Caldwell before moving to Spring Lake and later to Brielle and then Brick. He graduated from East Orange High School in 1949 and Rutgers in 1953. While attending Rutgers, John was a starting point guard and captain of the basketball team, as well as a member of the ROTC program. Upon graduation, he entered the army during the Korean Conflict as a paratrooper in the 511th Airborne Division for two and a half years. He began a long career on Wall Street, first with Merrill Lynch, then Shearson Lehman and was a partner in Orvis Brothers. He started his own firm, Forum Associates, and continued trading until his death.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Patricia Cullen Villani; his two sons, John T. and his wife Patricia of Mendham, along with their two sons and two daughters, and Mark J. and his wife Catherine of Red Bank and their two sons; his daughter Jennifer O’Leary of Spring Lake and her three daughters and a son; and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by a uncle and aunt, John and Dorothy DeMais of Brick.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 28 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Meridian Hospice at Home, 1340 A Campus Parkway, Neptune 07753.

Frederick Carpenter Brown
Bay Head resident Frederick Carpenter Brown, with family in Wall, died Monday, Feb. 23 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

He was 79 years old.

Born in New York City to the late Harry S. and Marjorie Carpenter Brown, he lived in Moorestown and had summered in Bay Head before moving there permanently in 1985.

He was an avid bridge player, multiple award winner at the Bay Head Yacht Club, and a Gold Life Master.

Mr. Brown had been employed as an engineer retiring from RCA, Moorestown.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and was a member of the Bay Head Yacht Club and the Toms River Bridge Club.

He was predeceased by his wife, Sally McIntyre Brown, in 1964.

He is survived by his three sons, Peter and his wife Nancy of Wall, Harry and his wife Carol of Westfield, and Frederick Jr. of Point Pleasant; two daughters, Willette Brown and Sandy Nevens of Union, Maine, and Dorothy Maffiore and her husband Bob of Brick; and his eight grandchildren, Rebecca and Sarah Brown, Amanda Maffiore, Samuel Nevens, Ashley and Peter Brown, and Alexandra and Stephanie Brown.

At 11 a.m. on Saturday, a memorial service will be held at All Saints Church, 500 Lake Avenue, Bay Head 08742, followed by a reception in Bristol Hall at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Joslin Diabetes Center, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215 [www.joslin.org] are suggested.

Raymond H. Bowman
Bradley Beach resident Raymond H. Bowman died Wednesday, Feb. 18 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 75 years old.

He had been employed as a heating and air conditioning technician for many years, first for his own company, Bowman Heating and Air Conditioning, Bradley Beach, and later for Jimmy Sarano Heating and Air Conditioning, Ocean Township, until the time of his retirement. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Born and raised in Jersey City, he was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jersey City, and had lived in Bradley Beach for the past 40 years. His family said Ray was a devoted father, a hard worker who never let the elderly he served go without heat during the winter.

He was predeceased by Raymond C. and Elizabeth Marschner Bowman, his wife Sadie J. Bowman, and his sister Geraldine Bowman.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Raymond and Kim Bowman of Belmar, Marie and Ivan Afanador, Joanne McCreery, Carleen and Rafael Figueroa, and Susan and Efren Perez, all of Bradley Beach, and Cheryl and Michael Jones of Bayville. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at the Church of the Ascension, Bradley Beach. Burial took place in the N.J. Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Raymond’s name to the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35, Wall 07719 to defray funeral expenses.

Lorraine Glick
Brielle resident Lorraine Glick died Friday, Feb. 20 at her home.

She was 83 years old.

She was born and raised in Riverside. In her younger years, she was an avid skier, who loved skiing at Lake Placid, N.Y. She worked for quite a few years for Western Union in South Jersey before coming to work at Young’s Stationary Store in Spring Lake. Lorraine was the widow of Willis Glick, who acted under the name Robert Norton of Joe Palooka movie fame. She and her her husband were world travelers. Mrs. Glick loved beautiful music and was an accomplished organist, local landscape artist and crafter, and was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan.

She was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Emily Young Seifried, her brother Edwin “Bud” Seifried, and her beloved husband, Willis Glick.

She is survived by her aunt, Vickie Young of Spring Lake and many dear nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were handled by the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall. Burial took place at the Atlantic View Cemetery, Manasquan.

Bartolome Ensenat
Neptune resident Bartolome Ensenat, with family in Belmar, died Tuesday, Feb. 24 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 60 years old.

Born in Newark, he lived in Union before moving to Neptune 10 years ago.

Bart was a graduate of St. Benedict’s Prep and St. Peter’s College. He retired as a medical supply salesman for Pfizer in New York City. He was a communicant at the Church of St. Rose in Belmar.

He was predeceased by his father, the late James Ensenat.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Nancy, his mother, Magdalena of Belmar, and a cousin, Antoinette Ensenat of Neptune.

Visitation will be held today from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Reilly Funeral Home, 801 D St. Belmar, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose Church on Seventh Avenue in Belmar. Cremation will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donation to Meridian Hospice, 4900 State Highway 33, Neptune 07753 would be appreciated.

James P. Smith
South Pasadena, Fla. resident James P. Smith, whose son lives in Point Pleasant, died Saturday, Dec. 8.

He was 60 years old.

He was born in Woodbury and lived in Seaside Park for 30 years before moving to Florida seven years ago.

He graduated from West Virginia University in 1970, receiving his master’s degree from Trenton State College in 1972.

Jim retired in 2000 after 25 years service as a police officer with Dover Township Police Department.

He was a member of the Dover Township PBA, and the local Elks.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Woods Smith; his son, Jason Smith of Point Pleasant; his stepchildren, Michelle Frost, of Forked River, and Scott Simpson and Craig Simpson, both of Toms River; and six grandchildren.

Friends are invited to a memorial service to celebrate Jim’s life from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at The Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 809 Central Ave., Seaside Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the New Jersey Chapter of The Surfrider Foundation, P. O. Box 760, Belmar, 07719, a grassroots, nonprofit, environmental organization that works to protect the oceans, waves, and beaches. Condolences may be sent by visiting www.ryanfuneralhome.com.

Deputy Police Chief Wayne S. LeCompte
Lakewood resident Wayne S. LeCompte, formerly of Point Pleasant, died Sunday, Dec. 9 in his home.

He was 69 years old.

Mr. LeCompte was a 39-year veteran of the Lakewood police force, retiring in July 2004.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the United States Army.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marion; his son Kevin Collins, a sergeant with Point Pleasant Police Department and his wife, Kathleen; and three grandchildren, Kevin C. Collins Jr., Kasey L. Collins and Kelly E. Collins all of Point Pleasant.

Funeral services were held at the Belkoff Goldstein Funeral Chapel in Lakewood.

Donations in his memory may be made to Lakewood Hatzalah, P .O. Box 256, 501 West County Line Road, Lakewood, 08701.

Helen M. Marhak
Point Pleasant resident Helen M. Marhak died Saturday, Dec. 8 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick Township.

She was 90 years old.

Born in Philadelphia, she lived in Union for 27 years, moving to Point Pleasant 20 years ago.

She was a homemaker.

She was the beloved wife of the late Emery Marhak; dear mother of William La Pointe, Yvette Klebash and Lorraine Hamada; sister of Wanda and Stanley Moslowski; grandmother of seven; and great-grandmother of four.

The McCracken Funeral Home, Union, handled the arrangements. Interment took place at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Rahway.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Point Pleasant Borough First Aid Squad, P. O. Box 3, Point Pleasant, 08742, would be appreciated.

Stephen J. Savage
Brick resident Stephen J. Savage, whose family is from Point Pleasant, went up the stairway to heaven on Thursday, Dec. 6 at home.

He was 52 years old.

Stephen was a compassionate, humble man. He rarely uttered an unkind word and found the positive in all.

He was a dedicated electrician for Lindstom Electric, Wall, where he was treated like family.

He loved Led Zeppelin and he was looking forward to hopefully being able to simulcast the upcoming reunion concert in England. He was an avid numismatist since childhood.

Steve was also a crabber who charted the tides and enjoyed catching large blue claws in the early mornings for his mom, especially at his Aunt Eleanor's house.

Steve was an ardent sports fan who rarely missed viewing a televised game of his favorite teams, which were the Mets, Jets, Rangers, Knicks and Penn State.

Not one to dwell on negatives, Steve’s motto was, “It is what it is.” That is how Stephen Savage will always be remembered by his family.

Stephen was predeceased by his beloved mother, Barbara C. Bennett.

He is survived by his brother, Michael Savage and his wife Eileen, of Point Pleasant; and his sisters, Laura Savage, of Point Pleasant, and Kate Couture and her husband, David, of Howell. He was a devoted uncle to Melissa Savage, Matthew Savage, Sarah Couture and Emily Couture. He also is survived by his buddy, Mollie.

The Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, handled the arrangements. Interment took place at Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle.
