James J. Taigia
Bay Head resident James J. Taigia died Friday, Dec. 7 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

He was 82 years old.

Born in Perth Amboy, he lived in Highland Park before moving to Bay Head in 1975.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer.

He was a 1950 graduate of Rutgers University, and received his master of education degree from the university in 1954. He was a lineman for the Rutgers University football team under Coach Harvey Harman during the “Golden Era.”

Before his retirement, he was an associate offensive coach for the Rutgers University football teams from 1968 to 1987, under head coaches John Bateman and Frank Burns.

Previously, he was a teacher and head football coach at Rahway High School, Piscataway High School, and Hillside High School from 1950 to 1968.

He was a former high school and college football and basketball official. He was a member of the Scarlet R Club, the Spring Lake Golf Club and the Metuchen Country Club.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Akerstrom Taigia; one daughter, Wendy Wolfson, of Ohio; one grandson, David R. Taigia, of Bay Head; and one granddaughter, Renee Taigia Pachucki and her husband, David, of Woodbridge.

The Quackenboss Funeral Home, New Brunswick, handled the arrangements. Burial took place at Elmwood Cemetery, North Brunswick.

Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.

Patricia M. [Smith] Savage
Point Pleasant resident Patricia M. [Smith] Savage died Wednesday, Feb. 11 in Ocean Medical Center in Brick..

She was 76 years old.

Born in Orange, she was raised in Maplewood and raised her family in Brielle before moving to Point Pleasant one year ago.

Mrs. Savage was a Homemaker. She was a parishioner of St. Martha’s Roman Catholic Church in Point Pleasant. She was a longtime member of the Manasquan River Yacht Club.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 50 years, Gerald V. Savage; six sons, Gregory S. and his wife, Erin, of Wall, James P. and his wife, Bregeen, of Wall, Robert K. and his wife, Wendy, of Tierra Verde, Fla., Thomas C. and his wife, Ronalyn, of Bear, Del., Brian F. and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Point Pleasant Beach, and Sean M. and his wife, Beth, of Brielle; a daughter, Kathleen J. Savage, of Point Pleasant; a sister, Jeanne Mehlin, of Rockaway; and 18 grandchildren, Kevin, Brogan, Griffin, Kendall, Bridget, Kaitlyn, Matthew, Gavin, Caroline, Daniel, Delaney, Conor, Claire, Rory, Declan, Audrey, Julien and Aedan.

Friends may call on Friday, 4 to 7 p.m. at O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, at Route 70 in Brick. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, 10 a.m. at St. Martha’s Roman Catholic Church in Point Pleasant. Burial will follow at St. Anne’s cemetery in Wall.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in her honor to the charity of your choice.

John Joseph Bormida Jr.
Brick resident John Joseph Bormida Jr., formerly of Point Pleasant, died Sunday, Feb. 8, in Ocean Medical Center.

He was 72 years old.

John was born on May 2, 1936 in Baltimore. He was raised in Belmar and lived in Spring Lake Heights for 40 years and then in Point Pleasant for nine years before moving to Brick one year ago.

John had been the proprietor of Bormida Heating & Cooling, Spring Lake Heights, and had also been employed as a fuel merchant for Farren Fuel Company, Belmar for 40 years before retiring in 1998. He was a member of the Fuel Merchants Association of New Jersey.

He was a communicant of St. Martha’s Church, Point Pleasant, and had served as a Eucharistic Minister at both St. Martha’s and St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake.

He was a proud graduate of St. Rose High School, Belmar, where he met his wife of 53 years Althea, and was a member of the St. Rose High School Alumni Association.

John was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 816, Asbury Park and had served as the financial officer for several years. Recently he was honored by the Knights of Columbus council as an honorary member. As a younger man, he was active as a Boy Scout Leader with St. Catharine’s parish, Spring Lake.

John was a dedicated Villanova University Basketball fan.

Surviving is his devoted wife of 53 years, Althea [Cassidy] Bormida; his beloved children and their spouses, John J. III and wife, Deborah, of Browns Mills, Gregory J. and wife, Geraldine, of Toms River, Douglas M. of Brick and his girlfriend, Sherry Schuster, Kevin P. and wife, Claire, of Spring Lake Heights, Joseph T., of Galloway Township, and his fiancée, Susan Scheirer, Kathleen Bormida Bogan and husband, John IV, of Point Pleasant, and Lisa Bormida Monaco and husband, John of, Havertown, Pa.

Also surviving are his 12 cherished grandchildren; John J. IV [Jack] Bormida, Stephanie Bogan White and husband, Matthew, Denise, Tricia and John Bogan V, Nicole, Lindsey and Alyssa Bormida, Courtney and Christopher Bormida, and Leslie and Kelly Monaco; his aunt, Christine McDonald, of Kearny; and several cousins.

The O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of arrangements. Committal was private at the convenience of the family.

Catherine E. Grove
Point Pleasant resident Catherine E. Grove died Friday, Feb. 6 in her home.

She was 64 years old.

Born in Newark, she had lived in Maplewood before moving to Point Pleasant 40 years ago.

She was employed as a bookkeeper-general manager for Richie Brown Landscaping, Brick.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her brother and his wife, Thomas and Phyllis Colligan, of Seffner, Fla.; her nephew and his wife, Troy and Kristin Colligan; her friend Tracy Rose Hayes, of Brick; and her beloved dog, Dunphey.

The Pable-Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, was in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Jersey Shore Animal Center, 183 Brick Boulevard, Brick, 08723, are suggested.

Doris “Ann” Batty
Brick resident Doris “Ann” Batty, formerly of Point Pleasant, died suddenly Sunday, Jan. 4, in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

She was 49 years old.

Ms. Batty worked in the cardiac field for 23 years. She was born in Newark and had lived in Point Pleasant Beach prior to moving to Brick 10 years ago. Ms. Batty was a communicant of Epiphany Roman Catholic Church, Brick.

She was predeceased by her father, John; her sister, Joann; and her brother, John Patrick.

She is survived by her mother, Margaret Batty, of Brick; two brothers, James, of Brick, and Tom, of Colorado; and five nieces and nephews.

Burial took place at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Montclair.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Herbertsville First Aid Squad, 375 Herbertsville Road, Brick, 08724, would be appreciated.

Colonial Funeral Home, Brick, was in charge of arrangements.

Isabelle S. Hillman
Sea Girt resident Isabelle S. Hillman, whose dauther lives in Point Pleasant, died Friday, Feb. 6 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

She was 88 years old.

She was a homemaker. She was born in Perth Amboy before moving to the Jersey Shore in 1941.

Mrs. Hillman was predeceased by her husband, John A., in 1993; and daughter, Kay Donna Gerin, in 2008.

Surviving are her daughter Gail Carol Flood and her husband, Robert, of Point Pleasant; granddaughter Christine Darcy and her husband, John; and two great-grandchildren, Brendan and Shealyn Kay.

The O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of arrangements. Burial took place at Atlantic View Cemetery, Manasquan.

Matthew T. Brand
Point Pleasant resident Matthew T. Brand died Tuesday, Feb. 10 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick.

He was 18 years old.

Born and raised in Point Pleasant, Matthew was a senior at Point Pleasant Borough High School, a member of the Key Club and Future Business Leaders of America.

He loved music, computers, cars and boating.

He was a parishioner of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Point Pleasant Beach and a volunteer for the CCD program. He was a cadet with Fire Explorers Fire Company No. 2 in Point Pleasant Borough. He was active with Ocean of Love.

Matthew truly believed that life is a team sport.

He is survived by his mother and father, Catherine [nee Randazzo] and William A. Brand IV; his sister and brother, Ashley and Sean, of Point Pleasant; his aternal grandmother, Jean Randazzo, of Manchester; and his paternal grandfather, William A. Brand III and his wife, Jayne, of Mantoloking and Stuart, Fla.

He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, James Randazzo, of Long Valley, Fran Thomas, of Howell Christian Randazzo, of California, Betsy Brand, of McLean, Va. and Sarah Kelly of Franklin Lakes; as well as many loving cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at The Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals 145 St. Catherine Boulevard, Toms River, and on Monday from 9 to 10 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Point Pleasant Beach.

Committal will be private.

Contributions may be made to the family in Matthew’s memory.
