Gloria J. Penn Salese
Sneads Ferry, N.C. resident Gloria J. Penn Salese, whose family lives in Point Pleasant, died Saturday, Aug. 30, at Duke University in North Carolina.
She was 62 years old.
She grew up in Waretown and later moved to Beachwood. In 1964, she graduated from Southern Regional High School, Manahawkin.
In 1994, she and her husband moved to Sneads Ferry, N.C.
She was predeceased by her father, Leonard Penn; her stepfather, Alan Rand; and her grandparents.
She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Daniel Salese; two sons, Danny and his wife Ronda and grandsons, Daniel and Deven of Sneads Ferry, N.C., and Michael and his wife Tracey and granddaughter, Brandie Jean and grandson, Michael Jr., of Forked River, Lacey; her mother, Ruth Rand, of Waretown; two sisters, Sharon Hess and husband Charles, of Manahawkin, and Christine Penn, of Forked River; two sisters-in-law, Doreen Allston, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Francine Brown, of Point Pleasant; and several nieces and nephews. We would also like to include Rosie, Maggie, C.C., Patchy, Emmy, and Jasper, just some of the many pets that she loved so dearly.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Waretown United Methodist Church.

Myra A. Evans
Point Pleasant resident Myra A. Evans died Monday, Sept. 1 in her home following an extended illness.
She was 74 years old.
She was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada on July 14, 1934. She was the daughter of the late Wendell MacInnis and Marguerite Doucette MacInnis.
She was predeceased by her son, Gerald Evans.
Ms. Evans is survived by two daughters, Debra Cini, of Brick, and Donna Woofter of Weston, W.Va.; two sons, Samuel Evans and Paul Evans, both of Forked River; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Also surviving are four brothers, Dennis MacInnis, of British Columbia, Donald MacInnis, of Edmonton, Alberta, William MacInnis, of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Gerald MacInnis of Kam Loops, British Columbia; three sisters, Berryl McKinnon, of Bethlehem, Pa., Janet Des Roches, of Nova Scotia, and Olive MacInnis of McBride, British Columbia; and several nieces and nephews.
Carl F. Burkhardt
Point Pleasant resident Carl F. Burkhardt died Monday, Sept. 8, in Concord Healthcare Center, Lakewood.
He was 90 years old.
Raised in Irvington, Mr. Burkhardt had lived in South Orange and had resided in Point Pleasant for over 30 years.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was honorably discharged as a sergeant.
He worked for Rheingold Beer, East Orange, for 30 years, retiring as the shop steward and was also a member of the company bowling league.
In addition to bowling, he liked gardening and was an avid birdwatcher.
Mr. Burkhardt was predeceased by his beloved wife, Rachel Scarpone Burkhardt; and by his sister, Edith Pecht.
Surviving to cherish his memory are three daughters, Jane Marino, of Clinton, Elaine Pollio and her husband, Anthony, of Whitehouse Station, and June Burkhardt Moscatelli and her husband, Anthony, of Point Pleasant; his sister, Lorraine D’Amico, of South Orange; and six grandchildren, Allison, Laura, Anthony, Dominick, Emily and Jennifer.
His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, at the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant [901 Beaver Dam Road, 732-899-3300], and interment will follow at White Lawn Cemetery, Point Pleasant. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Matthew W. Stockbridge
Point Pleasant Beach resident Matthew W. Stockbridge died Thursday, Sept. 4, in his home.
He was 49 years old.
He was a commercial fisherman for Christian Alexis Commercial Fishing Fleet, Point Pleasant Beach for many years.
Born in Point Pleasant, he lived in Brick before moving to the Point Pleasant area 35 years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Height Stockbridge, of Spring Lake Heights; a son, Matthew Castoral, of Spring Lake Heights; two brothers, Harry Stockbridge, of New York, and Gary Curlee, of Michigan; three sisters, Donna Leidy, of Island Heights, Sally Stockbridge, of New Jersey, and Deanna Curlee, of Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be offered at a later date. Colonial Funeral Home, Brick, is in charge of arrangements.
Donald A. Donahue
Howell resident Donald A. Donahue, whose son lives in Point Pleasant, died Tuesday, Sept. 9.
He was 77 years old.
He was born April 7, 1931, in Jersey City to James and Gertrude Kearney Donahue.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and served from 1952-53.
He was employed with Transport of N.J. for 17 years, by the Howell Board of Education as transportation supervisor for 20 years, and with the U.S. Postal Service for two years.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Mission Church at St. Veronica’s, where he was an usher; a member of Freewood Acres Fire Company for 40 years, and chief in 1980-81, and a member of the board of fire commissioners for 35 years.
After his wife and family, the most precious thing to him was his fire company and the people of Howell Township who he served. He served his community as a member of the recreation committee, the safety committee, civil defense [Office of Emergency Management], the United Republican Club; and County Committee District 11.
He was always willing to help anyone who needed help, but his main concern were his wife and family, his fire company and children in general.
He was predeceased by his parents, James and Gertrude Donahue of Jersey City; two daughters, Donna Ann and Colleen, who died at birth; a stillborn son; three brothers, Robert, James, and Joseph Donahue; and two sisters, Jean Crothers and Irene Donahue.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Edna; six sons, Donald and Nancy, of Washington, D.C., James and Sharon, of Georgetown, Texas, John and Kathy, of Point Pleasant, Robert and his fiancee Bonnie Jouben, of Howell, William and Mary, of Howell, and Michael and Yolanda, of Old Bridge; seven grandsons, Donald, Matthew, John T., Timothy, Robert, William and James; six granddaughters, Stephanie, Jocelyn, Jessica, Katlin, Theresa and Madison; three great-grandchildren, Lukas, Donald and Meredith; two brothers, John, of Florida, and Arthur, of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Gertrude “Trudy” Fitzpatrick and Dorothy Seigel, of Jersey City; and 18 nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:45 a.m. Friday at St. Veronica’s Roman Catholic Church, Howell. Burial
will follow at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. The Lakewood Funeral Home, Howell was in charge of arrangements.

Patricia Joyce Eckert Powanda
Sommerville resident Patricia Joyce Eckert Powanda, whose brother lives in Point Pleasant, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, in Somerset Medical Center in Somerville with her family by her side.
She was 51 years old.
She was born at Fort Dix. Patty was a resident of Somerville for the past 15 years and was formerly of Scotch Plains.
She graduated from Union Catholic High School and went on to attend Kean College in Union. She worked as Union County College in Cranford for the past 30 years.
Patty was a member of St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Hillsborough.
Patty enjoyed her family, traveling, going to the beach, and gardening. She was also an avid fan of many sports. Throughout her life she had a great sense of spirit and was able to connect with family and friends through her zest for life.
She was predeceased by her father, William Eckert Jr., in 2006; and her father-in-law, Peter Powanda.
Surviving are her loving husband of 15 years, Raymond David Powanda, of Somerville; her mother, Nancy [Joyce] Eckert, of Silver Bay; sisters, Barbara Allen, of Houston, Mary Ann Graham and her husband, Dana, of Plano, Texas, Diane Griffith and her husband, Jay, of Scotch Plains, Susan Eckert and her fiance, Paul Yarosz, of Morristown; her brothers, William George Eckert III and his wife, Donna, of Flemington, David Eckert, of Maryland, Daniel Eckert, of Point Pleasant, Edward Eckert and his wife, Patty, of Scotch Plains; her mother-in-law, Mrs. Peter Powanda; sisters-in-law, Diane [Powanda] Upshaw and her husband, David, and Janice [Powanda] Tabasco and her husband, Guy; nieces, Kimberly, Lauren, Amanda and Jessica; and nephews, Robert, Bryan, Van, John, Michael, Thomas, Alex, Joseph, Brandon and Ben.
Services for Patricia will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of Ketusky Funeral Home, Manville.

Jean “Joan” Mary Nahulak Szymanik
Brick resident Jean “Joan” Mary Nahulak Szymanik, whose daughter lives in Point Pleasant, died Friday, Sept. 5, in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.
She was 78 years old.
Born in Newark, to the late Andrew and Mary Kit Nahulak, she lived in the Down Neck section and for 25 years in Iselin, residing in Brick for the past 20 years.
Joan had worked at A & P Bakery in Newark as a secretary and later as a receptionist for Renaissance Eyewear, Fords.
She was an active member of the Point Pleasant Chapter of A.A.R.P. and was a communicant of the Church of Epiphany, Brick. Joan was also a member of her own “Special Group of Six.”
She was predeceased by her brothers, Walter, Max and William Nahulak.
Surviving to cherish her memory are her husband, of 55 years, Joseph; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley J. and Diane Szymanik and Brian and Deborah Szymanik, all of Woodbridge; two daughters and sons-in-law, Colette and Robert Betz, of Point Pleasant and Bernadette and Gary Perrine, of Brick; her devoted niece, Sharon Nahulak; 13 grandchildren, Kelly, Trisha, Wayne, Melanie, Brian II, Michael, Daniel, Jason, Stanley II, Kristen, Anthony, Mark, and Matthew; three great-grandchildren, Teresa, Vincent and Anthony; several nieces, nephews; and many dear friends.
The Pable-Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant was in charge of arrangements. Entombment took place at Holmdel Cemetery.

Anthony Calefati
Jersey City resident Anthony Calefati, a longtime summer resident of Lavallette, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, in his home.
He was 85 years old.
Born in Jersey City, he was a lifelong resident. He was a dispatcher at The New York Times, New York City, for 20 years, retiring in 1981. Prior to that, he was an insurance manager for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., Bayonne, for 25 years.
He served in the U.S. Navy. during World War II.
He was a former Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Mercy Church Jersey City and a summer communicant of Padre Pio Church. He and his wife had a summer residence in Lavallette for the last 20 years.
He was predeceased by his sister, Michelina “Mickey” O’Melia; and his brother Onofrio “Sonny” Calefati.
Anthony is survived by his wife Lucille [nee Petrocci]; his children Theodore, Joyce Calefati Booth, Anthony, Paul, Stephen and Barbara Tilker; his sister, Grace Kruthers; and 11 grandchildren.
On Friday Sept. 12 there will be a final viewing at dePaul Chapel at Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, 40 Sulivan Drive, Jersey City, beginning at 9:45 a.m. Entombment will take place at Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, North Arlington.
