Doris M. Symon Durando
Point Pleasant resident Doris M. Saymon Durando died Wednesday, Sept. 3, in Clairmont Care Center, Point Pleasant.
She was 80 years old.
Born in Jersey City, she lived in Bayville for 2 years prior to living in New York City and Point Pleasant.
She was a bookkeeper at Grumbacher Artist Supplies Co. in New York City for 50 years, retiring in 1993.
Doris attended Snyder High School with her two brothers, Jack and George. She learned to drive later in life, bought a motor home, and drove all over the country with her dog, Ember. She loved walking her dog and feeding the birds in Central Park.
Surviving are her sons, James Durando and his wife, Freda, of San Diego, and John Durando and Rosemary Squires, of Toms River; her daughter, Donna Rooney and her husband, James, of Point Pleasant; eight grandchildren, Jake, Kristin, Courtney, Jennifer, John Jr., Anthony, James and Kimm.
The Colonial Funeral Home, Brick, was in charge of arrangements. Cremation was private.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Jersey Shore Animal Shelter, 185 Brick Blvd., Brick, 08723, would be appreciated.
George Richardi
Point Pleasant resident George Richardi, died on Saturday, Aug. 30 in his daughter’s home in Flemington.
He was 93 years old.
Born July 7, 1915, in Secaucus, he was the son of George and Theresa Englebrecht Richardi. He married
his high-school sweetheart, Dorothea Brine in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in 1939.
He lived his younger years in Montville and Boonton, graduating from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in 1930 and Boonton High School in 1934.
He raised his family of nine children for 45 years in Lincoln Park. He retired to Point Pleasant in 1982 and lived there for 26 years.
George was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 25 and worked in the trade for over 60 years.
George, lovingly known as “Poppy” to his family, was truly a Renaissance Man with an amazing zest for life. He was a true outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing and gardening. He could do anything around the house, from building additions, stone walls and kitchen cabinets to fixing cars and boats. He was an avid beekeeper and his honey was a favorite treat to the family and neighborhood.
He was active in many organizations, including the Stock Club, Toastmasters, and bowling leagues. George was active at St. Joseph’s Church in Lincoln Park as a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society. He was an usher for many years and helped out at bingo.
George’s legacy was his welcoming, outgoing personality. He was a great teller of stories and his home was often filled with family parties and friends. He was generous to those in need and always had great practical advice. He will be missed by all who have known him.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Dorothea, on Aug. 14, 2002; and his brother, Vincent.
Surviving are his nine children, Jane Hovey, of Linwood, Sister Lois Richardi, of Rome, Allen Richardi, of Long Valley, Frances Scherzer, of Raleigh, N.C., Janet Speelman, of Chestertown, Md., James Richardi, of Boonton, Carol Riggin, of Flemington, Joanne Schneider, of Egg Harbor Township, and Thomas Richardi of Allentown, Pa.
He is also survived by 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Cyril Richardi, of Boonton, and William Richardi, of Apopka, Fla.
Visitation is Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Keri Memorial Funeral Home, 125 Main St., Lincoln Park. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Boonton, followed by interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.
Helen Schortz
Spring Lake resident Helen Schortz, whose sister lives in Point Pleasant, died Sept. 6 in the Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, surrounded by her loving family.
She was 84 years old.
She was born in Neptune, to Polish immigrants Fred and Marjana Pawlick. Mrs. Schortz grew up in Asbury Park on Washington Avenue and graduated from Bangs Avenue School.
Mrs. Schortz was employed by Opdyke Awnings for 30 years as a seamstress; she also enjoyed bowling and cooking and was a Cub Scout den mother and volunteer at St. Catharine’s church and school.
Mrs. Schortz was predeceased by her first husband, Lawrence G. Gray, in 1966; her second husband, Joseph Schortz, in 2004; her sisters, Harriet Kistner, Jessie O’Donnell, Jane Falkuski; and her brother, Frank Pawlik.
Mrs. Schortz is survived by her sister, Josephine Cook, of Point Pleasant; her loving children; Laurence Gray and his wife, Patricia, of Oceanport, Louis Gray and his wife, Janice, of Massachusetts, Judy Munday and her husband, Ernie, of Elberon, and Joseph Schortz and his wife, Linda, of Punta Gorda Fla.; devoted grandchildren, Lauren, Joseph, Jason, Tammy, Joel, Justin, Jeremy and Lawrence Gray, and Stacey and Joseph Schortz; and loving nieces and nephews, Helen, Jeff, Richard and Kathleen Cook, and James, Marylou and John Kistner.
Interment was at St. Catharine’s cemetery West Chicago Boulevard, Wall. Notes of condolence may be sent to jmfh2652@aol.com to be forwarded to the family.

William Harry Vannell
Jackson resident William Harry Vannell, whose son lives in Point Pleasant, died Monday, Sept. 1 in Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, New York City.
He was 58 years old.
Mr. Vannell was born in Trenton, and resided in Lakewood before settling in Jackson 12 years ago.
Mr. Vannell worked in the construction business with Paramount Homes in Jackson for five years before becoming disabled.
Mr. Vannell was predeceased by his parents, William and Janet Vannell.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Helgi Vannell; his daughter, Tina Vannell, of Jackson, his sons, William Vannell, of Point Pleasant, and Eric Vannell, of Jackson, his sisters, Vicki Scalcione, of Brick, and Paula Adams; his brother, Frank Vannell, of New Egypt, and by his two grandchildren, Christopher Vannell and Damian Vannell.
The George S. Hassler Funeral Home, Jackson was in charge of arrangements. Cremation was private.
Cathleen Frank
Wall Township resident Cathleen Anne Smith Frank, who was born in Point Pleasant, died on Friday, Aug. 29 surrounded by her entire family.
She was 42 years old.
The world will definitely be a much sadder place without her because Cathy was truly an angel right here on earth. Anyone who was privileged to know her will attest to that fact.
She was always happy very friendly and in a good mood. Cathy was the most sincere gentle, caring, giving, and loving lady God ever created. Cathy could literally light up a room with her warmth and that oh so beautiful, beautiful smile. Her loss is absolutely incalculable.
Cathy was a wife and a homemaker who thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family. She enjoyed rafting and biking. Cathy was a member of Wall United Methodist Church.
Born in Point Pleasant she lived in Spring Lake before moving to West Belmar 19 years ago.
Cathy would be so proud to know that through her death and her participation in the Sharing Network, she has provided someone very special to be able to have a better quality of life.
Cathy was predeceased by her mother, Sharon, in 1971; her maternal grandmother, Frankie D. Clayton, in 1989; and her paternal grandmother, Winifred J. Smith, in 1999.
She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Steven Frank, of Wall; three sons, Justin Frank, of Wilmington, N.C., and Brian Frank and Nickolas Frank, both of Wall; her father, Keith Smith, of Wall; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Brian Smith, of Neptune and Gary and Jeanne Smith, of Wall; three sisters and three brothers-in-law, Cynthia and Robert J. Kortenhaus, of Howell, Lisa and Jerry Wyckoff, of Tinton Falls and Laura and Hans Kerekes, of Lenoir, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews, Robert D. Kortenhaus, Sharon Kortenhaus, Kevin Smith, Emily Smith, Joanna Smith, Liam Smith, Cassie Garruzzo, Frankie Garruzzo, Anthony Garruzzo, Trevor Frank and Matthew Frank; and her dear friend Kelly Mullaney.
Interment was held at Wall Church Cemetery, Spring Lake Heights.

Kirk Werner
Wall Township resident Kirk Werner, formerly of Point Pleasant Beach, died on Aug. 2, in New Bedford, Mass.
He was 41 years old.
A lifelong resident of the Shore area, he attended schools in Wall and Point Pleasant Beach.
He was a dedicated commercial fisherman who worked on boats out of Point Pleasant Beach, New Bedford and Cape May.
Kirk was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Elke Werner.
He is survived by his beloved daughter, Gracie Werner, of Wall; his sister, Corinna Werner and her children, Reg, Erica, Brittany, Trina, Trent and Jacob, of Perth Amboy; and his devoted friend Ann Coiroand her husband Joseph, and their children.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Manasquan.

Maria J. Radel
Brick resident Maria J. Radel, whose son lives in Point Pleasant, died Mon., Sept. 1 in her home.
She was 97 years old.
She was born in Newark and was a lifelong resident of Maplewood and Seaside Park.
Maria was the best cook and baker, and was known affectionately by many as “Aunt Marie.”
Maria was predeceased by her beloved husband, Emil; her sister, Eugenia; and her brother Dominic [Dan].
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Barbara, of Point Pleasant; grandchildren, Philip and his wife, Stacy, of Lake Como, Jeffrey and his wife, Tina, of Kennebunk, Maine, Daniel, of Sea Girt and Jaine, of New York City; and great-grandchildren, Brian, Sean, Grace and Dana Marie. She is also survived by her brother, Philip; her sister, Rose; and her sister-in-law, Betty; as well as many nieces and nephews; and her companion, Helen.
