John McKenzie
Manasquan resident “Squan” John McKenzie had the “fickle finger of fate” point to him on Thursday, Aug. 21 at the home of his caretaker, Eleanor Nadrowski.

He was 89 years old.

John was born on Feb. 27, 1919 in Paterson. He was a longtime Manasquan resident who loved this quaint town and its residents. He always said that moving to Manasquan was the best decision that he ever made. He was a veteran of WW II, serving in the Army air corps. He was a member of the Manasquan Fishing Club and the Over The Rail Gang.

His lifetime love of fishing included his boat “Half Fast” [he dreamed of taking that 14 foot boat to the Hudson Canyon to catch the “big ones.”]

He’d keep a rod and reel in his van so that he would be ready to catch striped bass, bluefish or tuna. He said that bottom fishing was for old men and young boys, and he was in neither category.

He was a man who enjoyed life and had not a worry in the world.

Mr. McKenzie was a garbologist extraordinaire. He gave meaning to the word ‘recycle’ -- finding treasures in the discards of others. If you lived in Manasquan and surrounding towns, he has been through your trash cans.

His “Santa Claus” attitude brought smiles and delight to all people that knew him or crossed his path, especially children.

His van always had toys, trinkets, and candy available to give away to kinds while he was with the Over The Rail gang at the inlet.

If he knew your likes you might end up one morning to find gifts from his recycling efforts at your door.

He believed that everyday was a gift and it was his duty to share that joy with everyone. “No need to complain, ” he’d say, “make the best of it.”

His scrimshaw work can be found in homes locally, across the U.S.A., and in Europe. He was also a horologist [you may want to look up the definition].

His wooden signs decorate homes everywhere.

He was a superb father, a great friend [he leaves behind his best friend Peter Murcko], artist, fisherman, recycler, humorist and philosopher.

It was John’s decision to donate his body to the University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey [UMDNJ] in Newark.

He is survived by his daughter, Karen; granddaughter, Jennifer; and great-grandson, Conner, all of whom reside in California; his son, John Brent; and grandson, Travis, who reside in Florida.

A date for a Memorial service to celebrate his life has not yet been determined.

To quote John McKenzie, the character that he was, “The end is near -- eat dessert first.” And he did!

Frank Riccardi
Wall resident Frank Riccardi died on Saturday, Aug. 30 at his home.

He was 89 years old.

Mr. Riccardi was a Real Estate and Insurance Broker in Jersey City for many years before retiring. He was a U.S. Army Veteran during WWII. Mr. Riccardi was a Post Commander of the American Legion Post 52 in Jersey City and was a communicant of St. Catharine’s RC Church in Spring Lake. Born and raised in Jersey City he moved to Wall 15 years ago.

His wife Mary Riccardi predeceased him in 2007. Surviving are his daughters Frances Riccardi, of Jersey City, Sharyn Riccardi, of Weehawken; his brother, Vincent Riccardi, of Vero Beach; a sister, Grace Ferralotta, of California; his granddaughter, Sara Riccardi, of Jersey City; and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was held at St. Anne’s Cemetery, in Wall.

O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of the arrangements.
