Margaret McHugh
Point Pleasant Beach resident Margaret McHugh, formerly a summer resident of Manasquan died peacefully Saturday, Aug. 23, surrounded by family and friends.
She was 84 years old.
Born Margaret Moore in Harlem, N.Y., she graduated from Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow, New York City, and left her mother’s Harlem lumber yard to work in merchant shipping as World War II loomed. Holding fast to the war order, “Loose lips sink ships, ” Peg selectively recalled her career assisting the president and board chairman of an international merchant shipping line from 1939 through the 1960s. Somewhere deep in World War II archives are top-secret, classified correspondences she dutifully transcribed from shorthand to carbon copies and would never discuss with family and friends.
Retiring in 1969, she and her husband Charles McHugh, a D-Day veteran, relocated from Manhattan to Point Pleasant Beach and summered in Manasquan, where she belonged to St. Denis Catholic Church. Peg was sustained by the company of books and cats, and was beloved for choosing real estate in walking distance to libraries so avid was her passion for reading.
A woman of eclectic and informed tastes, Peg was a life long Yankees fan and New York City Ballet patron. She was delighted to tell tales of wartime Army-Navy games in Philadelphia and being a single career girl in post-war Manhattan. Appointments of bygone era, her graceful manners, quick wit and spirited calls for song will not pass unforgotten by those blessed to have known her.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, in 1975. Surviving are her sister, Kathleen Valli of West Minster, Colo.; two nephews, John Valli of Lewes, Del., and Michael Valli of Selbyville, Del.; and a niece, Marie Valli of Lakewood, Colo.
