Elizabeth Good Wolfson
Point Pleasant resident Elizabeth Good Wolfson died Saturday, Oct. 15, from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis [ALS], also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
She was 82 years old.
Born in Cincinatti, Mrs. Wolfson lived in Washington, D.C. and Bedford Village, N.Y., for more than 10 years, and Mantoloking for 25 years before moving to Point Pleasant’s Bay Point Harbour 10 years ago.
She earned a degree in fine arts from Rollins College, and attended Holton Arms in Washington, D.C.
The family’s dinner table in Washington’s Spring Valley often included Cabinet members, congressmen, governors, key White House staffers and business leaders. Her father, Thomas Good, was a pioneer in self-serving food marketing with Clarence Sanders. Mr. Good led the successful effort to gain congressional approval of a new product, margarine.
Mrs. Wolfson was the owner of the Sea Horse boutique in Bay Head. Her interest in fashion, which she considered one of the fine arts, was consuming. She referred to her buying trips as “a delightful substitute for my personal shopping sprees.” At her shop, she often nudged women into clothing that they would have overlooked, but that, once chosen, added immeasurably to their appearance and frequently saved them money. For friends who were uncertain of how to dress for occasions, she became an unpaid consultant. She traveled with them to New York or Philadelphia to shop until they found the right thing. It was said that “Betty Wolfson had the touch that could make a pauper look like a queen.” The hats she created and fashioned by hand bore the name “Straws.” They were were retailed Shore-wide and became a fashion item in the ‘80s and ‘90s.
She was a member of the Junior League, in Bedford Village, N.Y., was a former member of the Mantoloking Yacht Club, and had been a member of the Bay Head Yacht Club since 1980. She was a fund-raiser for the local first aid squad and for Ocean County’s Save The Bay organization.
Her generosity was often felt by supermarket shelf stockers, restaurant bus boys, or those lining up carts at shopping centers. She believed they were underpaid and under appreciated, and deserved a share of what was in her pocketbook. She never failed to offer warmth and appreciation.
In her later years, she enjoyed painting oils of her children and grandchildren.
