Donald Holmquist
Wall resident Donald W. Holmquist, who was born in Point Pleasant, died on Thursday, June 17 in his parents’ home in Brielle.

He was 50 years old.

He was a lifelong resident of the shore area.

A graduate of Manasquan High School and Rider University, he began his teaching career at Toms River High School North in September, 1976. He taught advanced biology and advanced placement biology, and retired from Toms River High School North this year after a 28-year career.

His awards included: Toms River Regional Schools 1988-9 Teacher of the Year; Governor’s Teacher Recognition Program Honoree 1988-89; Governor’s Meritorious Teacher Award for Toms River North - May 1989; Regional Outstanding Educator from the University of Richmond, 1999; Outstanding Teacher for 2002 from the College of New Jersey; and was chosen by his students many times to be included in “Who’s Who Among America’s High School Teachers.”

He was selected by Princeton University to set up its Molecular Biology high school satellite program for high school teachers.

Mr. Holmquist is survived by his parents, Richard Holmquist and Natalie Ritchey Holmquist, Brielle; his brother, Richard Holmquist Jr., Cazenovia, N.Y.; and two cousins, Patricia Geisel Yaeger and her family, Point Pleasant, and Penelope Geisel Bogart and her family, Little Egg Harbor.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home.

Donations in Mr. Holmquist’s memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey Hospice, 141 Bodman Place, Red Bank, N.J. 07701, or to the American Cancer Society.

Kristen A. Mack
Wall Township resident Kristen Ann Mack died Monday, June 21 in her home.

She was 16 years old.

Born in Freehold, Kristen lived in Wall all her life.

She had recently completed her junior year at Wall High School and attended Bible Baptist Church, Howell.

She was a diehard New Jersey Devils fan.

She played roller hockey for the last five years and was the only female on the Jackson Jinx Roller Hockey Team. She also ran track and threw shot put at Wall High School.

She loved music and her Pit Bull dog, “Jake”.

Surviving are her parents, Robert A. Mack Jr., Wall, and Jacqueline M. Starkey and her companion Scott G. Blair, Brick Township; one brother, Robert A. Mack III, Brick and Wall; her paternal grandparents, Robert and Nancy Mack, Neptune; her maternal grandparents, Don and Gabrielle Daly, Ocean Gate; her great-grandmother, Katherine Kissel, Pensacola, Fla.; five aunts and four uncles, Dennis and Mary Ellen Murachanian, Tinton Falls, Jeff and Elaine Mack, Wall, Scott and Susan Baldwin, Howell, Gabrielle Farrell, Allenwood, and Danny and Jessica Crawford, Roebling; and several cousins.

Funeral arrangements are from O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall. Visiting hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. Interment is private.

Donations may be made to the Ocean County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Joan Voitko
Point Pleasant Beach resident Joan Chack Voitko died Tuesday, June 22 in her home.

She was 72 years old.

Born in Bayonne, Mrs. Voitko lived in Brick Township until moving to Point Pleasant Beach seven years ago.

She was a director of nurses at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank.

She was the former director of assisted living in Bay Head Village, Toms River, and a former instructor of the nursing program with Ocean County College.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Andrew Chack.

Surviving are her husband, the Rev. Paul Voitko; one son, Michael Chack, Clifton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Beth and John Rennar, Brick, and Amy Chack, Clifton; two stepdaughters; three stepsons; and two grandchildren, Kate and Meg Rennar.

Funeral arrangements are from the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, Point Pleasant. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Point Pleasant.

Katherine Bonavita
Seminole, Fla. and former Sea Girt resident Katherine Bonavita, whose sister lives in Point Pleasant, died Wednesday, June 16.

She was 85 years old.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Bonavita lived in Sea Girt until moving to Florida in 2003.

She was a retired bookkeeper for United Presbyterian Hospital, Newark.

Surviving are two daughters, Jean M. Bonavita, Madeira Beach, Fla., and Lisa L. East, Rochester Hills, Mich.; two sisters, Delores Franks, Wall Township, and Bette Kruse, Point Pleasant; and two grandchildren, Todd East, Stowe, Ohio, and Kristin East, Rochester Hills, Mich.

Funeral arrangements were from the Anderson-McQueen Funeral Homes & Cremation Tribute Center - Bobbitt Chapel, St. Petersburg, Fla.

Jeanette D. Van Pelt
Point Pleasant resident Jeanette D. Van Pelt died Monday, June 21, in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

She was 68 years old.

Mrs. Van Pelt was a nurse’s aid at Point Pleasant Hospital for 15 years.

Born in Somerville, she lived in Manasquan before moving to Point Pleasant.

She was a graduate of Manasquan High School.

She was predeceased by her husband, Louis W. Van Pelt Sr. in 1985.

She is survived by: her mother, Susan Dempsey-Hancock, Manasquan; her son and daughter-in-law, Louis W. Jr. and Kathy Van Pelt, Point Pleasant; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Michael Oltrichter Jr., Point Pleasant, and Sheri and Eric Bossick, Brick; her brother, Harry B. Dempsey Jr., Brick; a sister, Alycee Shinn, of Steuben, Maine; and five grandchildren, Nicole, Michael, Tyler, Kaylee and Ashlee.

Funeral arrangements are by the Neary-Quinn Funeral home, 39 South St., Manasquan. Visitation will be held today from 10 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held at noon. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle.

William V. Lardieri
Point Pleasant resident William V. Lardieri died Wednesday, June 23, in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

He was 94 years old.

Born in Newark, he had resided in Point Pleasant for the past 50 years.

Mr. Lardieri was employed as a taxi cab operator in Newark by the 20th Century company.

He is survived by: his wife, Wilma Gaertner Lardieri; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jack and Marguerite, and Bill, all of Point Pleasant; five grandchildren, Ricky, Michael, Billy J., Billy V. and Damian Lardieri; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, 901 Beaver Dam Road, Point Pleasant,

A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. John Madden officiating. Entombment will be at Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Lardieri’s memory can be made to the Point Pleasant First Aid Squad.

Col. Walter R. Bruyere III
Brick Township resident Col. Walter R. Bruyere, whose cousins live in Bay Head, died Wednesday, June 2 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

He was 88 years old.

Born in Montclair, Col. Bruyere lived in Somerset before moving to Brick 10 years ago.

He was a graduate of Red Bank High School, and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1939 from Rutgers University, where he also served as captain of the football team.

He was a colonel in the Army, retiring in 1969 after 30 years of service. While serving, he received two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars, a Combat Legion Medal and a Combat Infantry Badge. He then was an officer for several years with the American National Bank, Morristown.

He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Bay Head.

Col. Bruyere was a member of Phi Gamma Delta, a Rutgers alumnus association, a member of the Retired Military Officers Association, a member of the Bay Head Yacht Club, and a avid model sailboat builder.

He was predeceased in 1993 by his wife, Virginia, and in 1969 by his son, Peter.

Surviving are one sister, Jean Kell, Beaufort, N.C.; three nephews, Dan Thompson, Avalon, Owen B. Thompson, Washington, D.C., and Dugaid Kell, Ellsworth, Maine; one niece, Rosalie Pearce, Beaufort, N.C.; and two cousins, Judy Rose Dahl and Henry Rose, both of Bay Head.

Funeral arrangements were from the Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, Point Pleasant Beach.

Eileen Duffy
Avon-By-The-Sea resident Eileen Duffy, whose son lives in Point Pleasant, died Tuesday, June 1 in her home.

She was 80 years old.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Duffy lived in Avon for 49 years.

She was employed as a court clerk with both the Allenhurst and Avon courts, retiring in 1991. Prior to this, she was employed as a secretary for 10 years with St. Elizabeth Church, Avon.

She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Church, Avon.

She was a member of the Avon Leisure Citizens Club. She also volunteered at the Stella Maris retreat house in Deal for five years.

She was pre-deceased by her husband Thomas A. Duffy, Jr.; one son, Martin T. Duffy; one brother, Harry O’Hare, and one sister, Grace O’Hare.

Surviving are two sons, Michael K. Duffy, Neptune and Brian T. Duffy, Point Pleasant; two daughters, Maureen Wosnitzer, Cherry Hill, and Margaret “Meg” Faria, Avon; one brother, Edward O’Hare, Livingston; three sisters, Anne Moore, Wall Township, Janet Chiaravallo, South Belmar, Patricia Formisano, Basking Ridge; and four grandchildren, Shannon Carroll, Brian Wosnitzer, and Kevin and Kayla Duffy.

Funeral arrangements were from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar.

Contributions in Mrs. Duffy’s name may be made to Avon First Aid or the Avon Fire Department.
