LOUIS C. "GIGI" BATTISTA, 73, of Oceanport died Sept. 24 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in New York City, he lived in the Bronx, N.Y., prior to moving to Oceanport 35 years ago. He was a security guard at Shore Condominium Complex, Monmouth Beach. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a communicant of St. Dorothea’s Roman Catholic Church, Eatontown. He is survived by his wife, Philomena Auricchio Battista of Long Branch; a son and daughter-in-law, Frank G. and Rosalie Battista of Long Branch; a daughter, Theresa J. Battista of Oceanport; two brothers, Anthony Battista of the Bronx, and Frank Battista of New York City; a sister, Nina Serpati of Bardonia, N.Y.; one grandson; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Dorothea’s Roman Catholic Church, Eatontown. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.

JAMES R. MALTAIS, 51, of Little Silver died Oct. 17 at home after a battle with cancer. He was raised in Middletown and resided in Fair Haven for 25 years before moving to Little Silver this past spring. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, Long Branch, for 23 years, retiring in 2001. He was also a licensed Realtor at the Mary Holder Agency, West Long Branch. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, stationed in Munich, Germany. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Red Bank. He was a member of and served as a union delegate and shop steward for the National Association of Letter Carriers. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, June Hall Maltais of Little Silver; his daughter, Jenny Pauline Maltais, at home; and several friends. A memorial service will be held Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Red Bank. Memorial donations may be made to Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF), 1609 Garden St., Santa Barbara, CA 93101.

CATHERINE ELY ROBERTS, 86, of Red Bank died Oct. 24, 2001 at Bayshore Health Care Center, Holmdel. Born in Red Bank, she lived in the New Monmouth section of Middletown, moving to Red Bank 48 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Red Bank. She was predeceased by her husband, Norman H. Roberts, in 1999. She is survived by two sons, George H. Roberts of Matawan, and Norman H. Roberts Jr. of Red Bank; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to The American Heart Association, 2550 Route 1, North Brunswick 08902.

AUGUSTINE FALVO, 92, of Long Branch died Sept. 11, 2001 at home. Born in Italy, she moved to the United States at 1-month-old and was a lifelong resident of Long Branch. She was a homemaker and worked part time at her family’s shop, the Corner Stork Stop and Children’s Shop, West End section of Long Branch. She was a parishioner of and member of the Altar Rosary Society at St. Jerome’s Roman Catholic Church, West Long Branch. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter Falvo, in 1987. She is survived by two daughters, Jeanette Falvo Marks of West Long Branch, and Virginia "Ginny" Falvo of West End; her brother, Amerigo De Fazio of Fair Haven; three sisters, Antoinette DeFazio, Wilma DeFazio and Rose Johnson, all of Red Bank; and two grandsons. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. Interment was at Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport.

CAPT. WILLIAM L. RICH JR., 79, of the West End section of Long Branch died Oct. 26, 2001 at home. Born in Jersey City, he resided in the Wanamassa section of Ocean Township before moving to West End 15 years ago. He was a retired ship captain, serving during 14 separate invasions including Korea and Vietnam. A ship’s captain since age 23, he was a member of the International Organization of Master Mates and Pilots. During peacetime, he was appointed director of research and international affairs, serving the United States as a delegate to the United Nations Maritime Committee. He was awarded the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal. His other awards include the Merchant Marine Combat Bar, the Pacific War Zone Bar, and the Victory Medal. He played professional baseball for the N.Y. Giants in 1941. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Rich, in 1983. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Hess Rich of West End; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. William and Martha Rich of Annandak, Va., and John and Kathleen Rich of Boston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne and Charles Von Nordeck of Baltimore, and Patricia and William Turner of New York; his sister, Lynn Rich; three grandchildren; and his wife’s five children. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at the Church of the Precious Blood, Monmouth Beach. Interment was at Glenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch. Memorial donations may be made to the San Alfonso Retreat House, 755 Ocean Ave., Long Branch 07740.

THOMAS J. BRENNAN, 74, of Middletown died Oct. 30, 2001 at Bayshore Health Care Center, Holmdel. Born in Sligo, Ireland, he came to the United States in 1949 and lived in New York City prior to moving to Middletown 47 years ago. He was a machinist for Molecu Wire Company, Farmingdale, for 30 years, retiring in 1990. He was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. He was a life member in both the Middletown Fire Company No. 1, and the Irish Federation of Monmouth County, and a 15-year member of Fair View First Aid, Middletown. He won the St. Brendon Award from the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh in 1987. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Philomena "Phyllis" Brennan of Middletown; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Marian and Philip Ilaria of Fair Haven, Eileen Carter of Syracuse, N.Y., and Phyllis and Anthony Viola of Doyletown, Pa.; his son, Thomas A. Brennan of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Mary Kilcullen of Middletown, Anne Murphy of the Belford section of Middletown, and Kathleen O’Hara of Ireland; his brother, Peter Brennan of Chicago, Ill.; and four grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Entombment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.

SOPHIE MACKIEWICZ BORUCKI, 92, of Middletown died Oct. 31, 2001 at Beachview Extended Care Facility, Keansburg. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she lived there until moving to Middletown in 1969. She was a communicant of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg. She was also a member of the Bayshore Senior Center. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph W. Borucki in 1977; and a daughter, Joan Lotito in 1997. She is survived by four sons, Joseph Borucki of New Windsor, N.Y.; Walter Borucki of Sun City, Ariz.; Richard Borucki of Middletown; and John Borucki of Union Beach; her daughter, Irene Coons of Red Bank; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg. Burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.

DOROTHY PAWLYK HURLEY, 71, of the Parlin section of Sayreville died Nov. 1, 2001 in Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center, Edison. Prior to her retirement several years ago, she was employed for 15 years as a fine jewelry salesperson at J.C. Penney Co. Inc., East Brunswick. Her husband, Donald Hurley, died in 1997. Surviving are four daughters, Colleen Hurley of Jersey City, Linda Flynn of Edison, Donna Hurley of Westminster, Colo., and Dorothea Bongiovi of Red Bank; three sisters, Lillian Sullivan of Vero Beach, Fla., Helen Wyckoff of Brick and Olga Farozic of Berlin, Md.; and eight grandchildren. Services were held at Kurzawa Funeral Home, Sayreville.

SALVATORE S. GENTILE, 82, of Oceanport died Nov. 12, 2002 at Gateway Care Center, Eatontown. Born in New York City, he resided in Long Branch before moving to Oceanport 45 years ago. Mr. Gentile was the vault manager at Bank of New York, New York City, for 20 years, retiring 20 years ago. He was a parishioner of the Church of the Precious Blood, Monmouth Beach. He served with the U.S. Army. He was a Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 335, and a member of the Old Guard, both Long Branch. He was very active in local activities and received the Oceanport Borough Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001, and the Monmouth County Park System Achievement Award for Voluntary Service in 1992. Active in senior activities, he was past president of the Oceanport Seniors and was named Man of the Year by the Monmouth County Senior Citizens Council. He was also appointed to the advisory council of the Monmouth County Office on Aging by the Monmouth County Freeholders. He was instrumental in forming Oceanport’s library and served as the library association’s vice president. Mr. Gentile was predeceased by his wife, Rose Gioscia Gentile, in 1986. He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Angela and Kevin Coyle, and Virginia Whitfill, all of Brick; and one granddaughter. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at the Church of the Precious Blood, followed by interment at Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport. Memorial donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus, P.O. Box 493, Long Branch 07740. Arrangements were handled by Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch.
