PATRICIA HAWTHORNE, 61, of BRADLEY BEACH, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at the Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. She had worked in the customer service department for the Trans American Insurance Company, Hackensack until retiring. She was a communicant of the Roman Catholic Church of the Ascension, Bradley Beach. Born in New York, NY, Mrs. Hawthorne had lived in Wood-Ridge, then Hackensack before moving here ten years ago. Surviving are her husband, James Hawthorne, a son, James Hawthorne, Jr., of Red Bank, two daughters, Sandra Hawthorne-Tormey and her husband Michael of Colts Neck and Cynthia Hawthorne of Trenton, and her grandchildren, John James Edwards, Jr., Shannon Rose Tormey and Joey Pierantoni. DORIS S. RAINES, 91, of Ocean Grove, died Friday, July 14, 2006 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. She was predeceased by her husband, Arnold W. Raines in 1975. Surviving are two sons, Ronald Raines of Neptune and Gerard Raines of Quincy, MA., and her granddaughter, Cynthia Raines of Knoxville, TN. A graveside service was held on Monday afternoon, July 17th at 1:00 at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Montclair with interment following. In lieu of flowers, contributions to American Cancer Society, 801 Broad Street, Shrewsbury, N. J. 07702 would be appreciated.
KEVIN "Irish" UPTON, 48, of NEPTUNE, died Thursday, July 13, 2006 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Surviving are his loving daughters, Tara-Marie and Kimberly; a son, Joseph Sean of Neptune; his parents, Richard and Anne Marie McLoughlin Upton of Brick; his sister, Maryanne Tino; adored godchild, Kellyanne Tino of Brick; his aunts, Margaret O'Meara of Brielle, Joan Dedovich of Florida, and Brenda Thomas of New York; his uncles, John McLoughlin of Bradley Beach, and James Upton of New York City; his dearest companion, Dawn Juhasz; his former wife, Janet Upton of Neptune and a host of cousins and friends. A September Memorial Mass is planned at Ascension Church, Bradley Beach.
HELEN CHIDNESE, 93, of NEPTUNE, died Monday, July 17, 2006, at home. She was the owner of Helen's Grocery Store, Asbury Park, and also she was a seamstress for Roxanne Swimsuits before retiring. Mrs. Chidnese was a graduate of the Ridge Avenue School, and Neptune High School, and a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Asbury Park. Helen enjoyed Thursday Afternoon Pokeno Games with her Pokeno Club and was an avid New York Yankee fan. Born in Pompton Lakes, NJ, she had lived in the shore area for more than 80 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Louis Chidnese in 1963. Surviving are a son, Patrick Chidnese and his wife Kathy of Asheville, NC, a brother, Joseph Maccanico of Spring Lake, three sisters, Celeste DeCapua and her husband Frank of Neptune, Rose Norris of Brick Township and Viola Elgrim of San Jose, California, three grandchildren, Krista Gentry of Plantation, FL., Patrick and Nicole Chidnese of Asheville, NC and a great grandson, Quin Gentry of Plantation, FL. WILLIAM F. “Bill” HERLIHY, of Ocean Grove, died Thursday, July 20, 2006 at the Manor by the Sea, Ocean Grove. He was employed for many yeras as a police officer in Keansburg and also served a term as borough clerk there. Bill was involved in many business ventures over the years, including ownership in the Asbury Lodge in Asbury Park. For the last 20 yeras he worked as a teller at Monmuth Park racetrack. Bill enjoyed many friendships over the years, including the Gannon Family of Ocean Grove. Mr. Herlihy was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army. He was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Elizabeth Akins Herlihy, and by his siblings, Thomas, John, Michael, Joseph, Francis, and Charles Herlihy, Ethel Kenny and Catherine Carroll. ARTHUR E. WRIGHT, 83, of ASBURY PARK, died Saturday, July 22, 2006 at the Temple University Medical Center, Philadelphia. He was the advertising director for the Asbury Park Press for more than 35 years, retiring in 1983. He also operated Arrow Advertising, the company he founded 56 years ago. Mr. Wright was instrumental in forming ADAM, for Advertising Directors and Advertising Managers, to discuss the new Truth in Advertising consumer laws, formulated by the State of New Jersey to protect consumers buying automobiles, furniture, appliances and electrical products. The organization met monthly to clarify the State’s ever changing interpretation of the new regulations. He was a past president of the New Jersey Press Association, a member of the Board of Directors of the YMCA, Asbury Park, and a member of both the Allenhurst and Asbury Park Chambers of Commerce. Mr. Wright was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army Air Corps, 435 Troop Carrier Division, Combat Operations. He was a 1941 graduate of Neptune High School, and a 1950 graduate of Syracuse University where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree and was president of the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity. Later he received his MBA from Monmouth College, graduating Cum Laude in 1977. Mr. Wright loved to travel. He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur Blackwell and Anna Gates Wright. Surviving are two sons and daughters in law, Robert J. Wright and his wife, Jane, of Medford and Douglas C. Wright and his wife, Kari, of Jamesville, NY; thirteen grandchildren, Sherylyn Lippincott, Douglas S. Wright, Christopher R. Wright, Ryan C. Wright, Brett Baumbach, Nicholas E. Wright, Matthew P. Wright, Patrick S. Wright, Kaci A. Wright, Jake R. Wright, Delancey T. Wright, Shane D. Wright, and Kelly R. Wright, his longtime companion, Sherry Beebe and many loving friends. A funeral service was held at the Trinity Episcopal Church, Asbury and Grand Avenues, Asbury Park on Friday morning, July 28th at 11:00 with interment following at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown, N. J. Friends were invited to call at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9.
GWENYTH M. HARRIS, 85, of WANAMASSA, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Harris was a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Wanamassa Fire Department and a 1941 graduate of Asbury Park High School. Born in Asbury Park, NJ, she had lived in Wanamassa for the last 58 years. She was predeceased by her sister Betty Van Schoick. Surviving are her husband Joseph J. Harris...together they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in April...a son and daughter in law, John J. Harris and his wife, Debbie, of Wanamassa, two daughters and sons in law, Carol Stehn and her husband, Eric, of Aberdeen, and Mary Ellen Garreau and her husband, Jeffrey, of Toms River, a sister, Nila J. Sutphin of PA, four grandchildren, John R. Harris, Allison Griffith, Thomas Stehn and Linda Stehn and two great grandchildren Matthew and Ashley Griffith. A funeral ceremony was held at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Saturday morning, July 29th at 10:00 with burial following at the Hamilton Cemetery, Neptune, N. J. MARGARET LOUISE DAMITZ, 100, of Ocean Grove, died Friday, July 28, 2006 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. She celebrated her 100th birthday on October 31, 2005. Mrs. Damitz was a longtime resident of Ocean Grove, first coming to visit during the summer of 1914, staying at the St. Elmo Hotel on Main Avenue, with her grandmother. She was a communicant of St. James Episcopal Church, Bradley Beach for many years and a member of the Morristown High School Alumni Association. She was predeceased by her first husband, Walter Crawford in 1952 and by her second husband Frederick Damitz in 1988. Surviving is her daughter, Karla Zimmerman and her husband, Bill, of Ocean Grove, her step daughters Carol Cross of Sacramento, CA, and Nancy Bassett of Franklinville, NY, her step son William Damitz and his wife, Sue, of Boulton, MA, her grandchildren, Laura Graham and her husband Michael, and Tom Zimmerman, her step grandchildren, Colleen Haddican, Vernon, Brian, and Bill Cross, Carol Bassett, Laura Faulring, Karl Bassett, and Meredith Speichle, and Bradley and Karl Damitz, her great grandchildren, Tara and Sean Graham, her step great grand children, Cejai, Nathan, Shane, Stephanie, Nathaniel, Debbie, Tanya, Christopher, Derrick, Richie, Hannah, Jeffrey, Shannon, Alexander, Anthony, David and Willem, and her step great great grandchildren, Nathan, Zachary, Natasha, Ryan, Christopher and Hailey.
