JOHN J. O'BRIEN, 68, of OCEAN GROVE, died Monday, April 9, 2007, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. He was a self employed taxi driver and a musician performing in many locations, including New York and Las Vegas. Born in Jersey City, he had lived in Kearny and Harrison before moving to Ocean Grove more than 30 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Judith E. Brinkman O'Brien, a daughter, Dawn O'Brien of Sewell, NJ and three grandchildren Craig O'Brien, Bryan McKay and Krystal McKay. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial
was offered on Wednesday, April 18th at 10:00 AM at the Roman Catholic Church of the Ascension, 501 Brinley Avenue, Bradley Beach. There were no calling hours.
RUTH N. BILLS, 79, of Shark River Hills, NEPTUNE, died Friday, April 13, 2007,
at home. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Bills was a member of the Hamilton United
Methodist Church, Neptune. Born in Germantown, PA, she lived in Trenton until
moving to Ocean Grove in 1949 then settling in Shark River Hills in 1956.
Surviving are her husband, Alvin E. Bills., Jr., two sons, Douglas N. Bills of
Rutherford and Rev. Jeffrey D. Bills of Voorhees, two daughters, Sharon L. Speiser of Yardley, PA and Lisa L. Cuzzolina of Appleton, Wisconsin, two brothers, Paul R. Keating of Lancaster, PA and Kenneth A. Keating of Shark River Hills and a sister, Joy Gulick of Lookout Mountain, GA. Mrs. Bills is also survived by ten grandchildren Mary Elizabeth Sharp, Greg Bills, Jason Bills, Alex Speiser, Dan Speiser, Joshua Bills, Matthew Bills, Victoria Cuzzolina, Mitchell Cuzzolina and Sophia Cuzzolina and three great grandchildren Random Water, Louisa Sharp and Francis Sharp. A graveside service will be held at the Hamilton Cemetery, Neptune on Tuesday morning
April 17th at 11:00 AM with burial following. A memorial service was held at
the Hamilton United Methodist Church, 858 Old Corlies Avenue, Neptune, on Tuesday afternoon, April 17th at 4:00 PM with a reception to follow. There are no calling hours. KATHLEEN J. DOWLING, 57, of Shark River Hills, NEPTUNE, died on Friday, April 13, 2007, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune after a struggle with cancer that began in 1982. She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends in her home. She had a keen interest in politics and national affairs and gave generously of her time and money to support Democratic causes on the local, state and national levels. In 1999 and 2000 she served as a volunteer on the Bill Bradley for President Campaign in New Hampshire. She loved her home on the hill overlooking the river where each year she eagerly anticipated the first warm breezes of spring. Her smile, her sparkling personality and gentle spirit will be missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Dowling was a 1967 graduate of Neptune High School. Born in Paterson, NJ, she was a lifelong resident of Neptune. Surviving are her husband, Michael W. Dowling, three sons, Joseph Davison of Jackson, Michael T. Dowling of Oceanside CA, currently serving as an officer with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines in Ramadi, Iraq, and his wife, Lauren Dowling and Christian Dowling of Neptune, a brother, Brian Walker and a sister Patricia Rothacker both of Rochester, NY, and two grandchildren, Joseph Davison of Harpers Ferry, WV and Michael Dowling of Oceanside, CA. A funeral service was held at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Thursday morning April 19 at 10:00 AM. Friends were invited to call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9.
IRENA S. HALEN, 83, of BRADLEY BEACH, died Monday, April 23, 2007 at the Bayside Manor, Keansburg. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Halen was a communicant of the Ascension Roman Catholic Church, Bradley Beach. Born in Newark, she had lived there before moving to Bradley Beach 25 years ago. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Halen in 1986. Surviving are three sons, Walter Halen of Yardley, PA, Ronald G. Halen of Cedar Grove, NJ and Steven A. Halen of Midland Park, NJ, a daughter, Janet M. Vigliante of Spring Lake Heights, nine grandchildren, Kimberly Gahan, Alexis, Ariel and Dominic Vigliante, Michael, Nicholas, Erica, Gregory and Alexander Halen. A Mass of Christian Burial

SARA LIPPINCOTT, 93, of OCEAN GROVE died peacefully at the Manor-by-the-Sea, Ocean Grove, on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 after a short illness. Mrs. Lippincott was born in Woodbury N.J. and lived most of her life in Ocean Grove. She was a resident of the Francis Asbury Manor Methodist Home for many years. As an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church since 1939, she served as a choir mother, Women's Society member and circle leader. She spent many years volunteering in local community organizations including more than 20 years in the PTA. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family has many happy memories of her life. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joan and Curtis Lippincott of Skillman; her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Calvin Patterson of Marietta, Georgia; her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Ron Phillips of Little Egg Harbor; her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Richard Wolf of Starkville, Mississippi; nine grandchildren, Leah, Calvin, Carla, Bradford, Allan, Andy, Michael, Alex and Michael; and seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Alberta “Betty” Carter of Burlington and a brother, H. Edward Curtis of Summerfield, Florida. A celebratory service of her life was held at the Francis Asbury Manor, 70 Stockton Avenue, Ocean Grove on Saturday morning, June 2nd at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Methodist Fellowship Fund of Francis Asbury Manor.
BIAGIO JOSEPH FERRARA, 60, of OCEAN GROVE, died Friday, May 4, 2007, at home. He had worked as a bookkeeper. Born in Long Island, NY, he was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the military police. Surviving are a son, Joseph Biagio Ferrara of Miami, FL and his mother Claire. No funeral ceremony has been scheduled at this time and there are no calling hours.
SANFORD P. "TUCKY" DAVES, Jr., of Orlando, FL, formerly of ASBURY PARK, died on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 in Florida. He had worked as a school bus driver for the Ocean Township Board of Education for more than thirty years until retiring in 1982. He was also a farmer. Born in Kirkwood Springs, KY, he had lived in Asbury Park before moving to Florida. He was predeceased in 1981 by his wife, Dorothy Bowne Daves. Surviving are two daughters, Sandra K. Daves of Orlando and Joann Silkowski of Tampa, a sister, Ida Mary Dormeier of Dixon, KY, two granddaughters and four great grandchildren. A funeral service was held at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Saturday, May 12th at 11:00 AM with burial following at the Hamilton Cemetery, Neptune. Friends were invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 7-9 PM and on Saturday from 10 AM until the time of the service.
EDNA STEWART KOPP, 91, of OCEAN GROVE died Wednesday, May 16, 2007. Mrs. Kopp was a long time resident of Ocean Grove, where she was active in civic affairs and had served as its Director of Tourism until she was 89 years of age. She had owned and operated the Ocean Plaza Hotel for many years. Mrs. Kopp was born and raised in South Orange, NJ and was a graduate of Maryland College for Women, where she had been President of the Student Council. She was predeceased by her husband George W. Kopp and her son, Robert Jeffrey Kopp. Surviving are her son, George, of Washington, DC and three grandchildren, Joshua, Robert and Melissa. A funeral service was held on Monday at 10:00 AM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove, with interment following at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY. Friends were invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 3:00 to 5:00.
MAE C. DETURK, 89, of OCEAN GROVE, formerly of Union, died Wednesday, May
23, 2007 at the Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Mae was born in Newark, June 21, 1917, to parents Harriet and James McCance. She married
Jackson L. DeTurk on Feb. 12, 1944. She was employed by the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association until retiring in 1989. Prior to that she was the office manager for the United Methodist Northern New Jersey Conference. Mae was an active member
of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and a long time member of the Union
United Methodist Church. Mae was predeceased by her husband, Jack, in 1980 and her beloved son, Tommy in 2004. Surviving her are children, Lew & Kathi DeTurk of Raleigh, NC, Carol & Austin Alvarez of Gales Ferry, CT, Joanne DeTurk of Colonia, NJ, a dear friend, Richard Harper of Ocean Grove, seven grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren. A graveside service was held at the Hollywood Memorial Park, Union, NJ on Sat., June 2nd at 11 AM. A Memorial Service followed at 3 PM at the Francis Asbury Manor, 70 Stockton Ave., Ocean Grove.
