JOAN DOWNES, 76, of LONG BRANCH, died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at the Monmouth Convalsecent Center, Long Branch. She had a career in office management and sales until retiring in 1980. Mrs. Downes was a member of the First Baptist Church of Asbury Park and its Ladies Missionary Society. She taught Sunday School and was active with the church's youth group. She was a member of the Cross & Crown of Monmouth County, the First Saturday Group at the Lumley Homes, Asbury Park, and the Seaview Tower Bible Study Group. Born in Bronx, N. Y., she had lived in Jersey City and then in the shore area for more than 47 years. Surviving are her sons, Leon of Parsippany, and Hal of Fairlawn, NJ, three granddaughters, Tess, Becky and Amanda and two half brothers, Samuel Henry Divak and David Divak. A funeral service was held at the First Baptist Church, Third & Grand Avenues, Asbury Park on Thursday, July 17th at 11:00 AM, with burial following at the Hamilton Cemetery, Neptune. There were no calling hours.
TERRIE ANNE SULLIVAN, of OCEAN GROVE, passed away peacefully on Monday,
July 14, 2008, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in
Camden she had lived in Toms River before moving here eight years ago. She was predeceased by her father James Sullivan in 1993. Surviving are her mother, Doris McCleery Sullivan of Ocean Grove, a brother Jerry S. Sullivan and his wife Debbie of Darby, Montana, a sister, Kristine Sullivan of Shrewsbury Township, her nephew, Shawn Murphy, her nieces, Sara and Tara Sullivan and her uncle, Richard McCleery and his family of New Bedford, Mass. A private funeral service was held at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, Ocean Grove with burial following at the Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls, N. J. JANE "Betty" HALL POLHEMUS, of West Allenhurst, died Thursday, July 17, 2008 at home. Mrs. Polhemus was a teacher at the Long Branch Senior High School for 34 years, the last 10 of which she was the chairman of the business education department. She graduated from the Bradley Beach Elementary School and Asbury Park High School, where she was a member of the Honor Society, President of the Girls Athletic Association and a member of the Business Club. Mrs. Polhemus received her Associate Degree from Monmouth Junior College, her Bachelor Degree from Rider University and her Masters Degree from Rutgers University. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Asbury Park, where she served on the Staff-Parish Relations Committee, was a member of the Hope Circle and was the Financial Secretary. She sang in the choir for many years and as a member of it's Gilbert and Sullivan Society sang several lead roles in its operettas. She served on the family selection committee for Habitat for Humanity. Presently, she was a member of Ballard Methodist Church, Asbury Park. Mrs. Polhemus served the United Methodist Homes of New Jersey for many years, on the Board of Directors, the Foundation, the Centennial Campaign Committee and as treasurer of the Service Auxiliary to the Francis Asbury Manor and the Manor by the Sea. She was a member of the Ocean Grove Auditorium Choir for many years and most recently aided the librarian. Mrs. Polhemus was born in the Spring Lake Ann May Hospital and lived in Bradley Beach for 38 years, later moving to Neptune City. After marrying George C. Polhemus in 1966, they moved to West Allenhurst. Her husband predeceased her in 1987. Surviving are her niece, LaVonne D. Luton, a grand nice, Heather and her husband, Robert Colaiacovo, a nephew, Robert Luton and two great nieces, Alexandra Colaiacovo and Caitlyn Luton. A funeral service was held on Monday, July 21st at 10:00 AM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove, with interment following at Glenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch. Friends were invited to call on Sunday from 1-5 PM at the funeral home. It is Mrs. Polhemus' wish that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Service Auxiliary of Francis Asbury Manor, 70 Stockton Avenue, Ocean Grove, NJ 07756.
MARGARET “Peggy” O’MEARA, of Brielle, died Saturday, July 19, 2008 at home after a long illness. She began her career at Industrial Mica as a bookkeeper, working there for 25 years until moving to Bradley Beach in 1982. Mrs. O’Meara then worked for Monmouth Cablevision from its inception until retiring in 1998. While living in Bradley Beach she was a parishioner of the Church of the Ascension. After moving to Brielle, she bacame a member of St. Denis Roman Catholic Church, Manasquan. Born in Queens, New York, she was graduate of Dumont High School in Bergen County, NJ. She was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Edward, by parents, John and Eleanor McLoughlin and by her sister, Eleanor Puccio. Surviving are her sisters, Ann Marie Upton of Brick, and Joan Dedovich of Cape Coral, Florida, her brother, John McLoughlin of Bradley Beach and a host of nieces, grand nieces and great grand nieces. Relatives and friends were invited to call from 2-4 and 7-9 PM Tuesday at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. A Mass of Christian Burial
was offered on Wednesday, July 23rd at 10:00 AM at the Church of the Ascension, 501 Brinley Avenue, Bradley Beach. Interment

DOROTHY GONDEK, 85, of OCEAN GROVE, died Sunday, August 17, 2008, at the MediCenter, Neptune City. She was a cafeteria worker at the Neptune High School until retiring. Mrs. Gondek was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Ocean Grove where she was a member of the Frances Stern Circle. She was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and in the hospice at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. She was formerly a girl scout and brownie leader. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Gondek in 1984. Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Gondek of Arlington, MA and Joanne Daw and her husband, Mark, of Sierra Madre, CA, and her sister, Florence Watt, of Tinton Falls. A funeral service was held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, New York & Embury Avenues, Ocean Grove on Wednesday, August 20th at 11:00 AM with burial following at the Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. There were no calling hours.
ANDREW J. EGNER, Jr., 83, of OCEAN GROVE and Livingston, died Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Mr. Egner was the President of Orange Savings Bank and after its merger with Hudson City Savings Bank, he served as Executive Vice President. After a 65 year career in banking, he retired from the board of directors at age 80. Mr. Egner was an elder and choir member at the William Street Presbyterian Church in Orange and later the First Presbyterian Church of Orange. He was past president of the YMCA of Orange and Maplewood and was the current Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges. Mr. Egner was a World War II veteran serving with the United States Marine Corps for more than 4 years. He was a 71 year member of the Ocean Grove Auditorium Ushers Association, a member of the Ocean Grove Finance Committee, a member of the Ocean Grove Choir and past president of Rosedale cemetery in Orange. Mr. Egner was born in Orange on November 5, 1924 to Andrew J. and Lavina Ronsley Egner. Surviving are his wife, Ruth

Egner and his wife, Diane, of Livingston, a daughter, Carol, and her husband, Michael Boniello, of Ocean Grove, a sister Lucille Egner of Spring Lake Heights and three grandchildren, Andrew, Alyssa and Willie Egner. Relatives and friends were invited to call on Monday, August 25th from 4:00 -7:00 PM at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 80 Embury Avenue, Ocean Grove. A funeral service was held at 7:00 PM. JOAN MARGOT ENDER BUERCK, 74, formerly of ALLENHURST, passed away August 17, 2008, in Port Charlotte, FL. Joan was a graduate of Bond Street Grammar School, Asbury Park. She went on to graduate from Asbury Park High School, where she received straight A's for all four years. Joan was on the cheerleader squad for those four years. Her father Harry Warren was a well known band leader in the Asbury Park and Miami Beach area during the 1930's and 40's. Joan worked as a retail sales person in children's clothing and as a buyer and salesperson for Young World in Deal, later managing a children's store in Oakhurst. Joan and her husband moved to Port Charlotte, FL in 1988. For the past eight years, Joan fought a valiant battle with Lewy Body Disease. We will miss her so much. Joan leaves behind her husband and companion of fifty eight years, Harry F. Buerck, of Punta Gorda, FL, a son, Harry “Hank” F. Buerck, III and his wife, Jeri, of Las Vegas, NV, a daughter, Bonnie C. Buerck of Venice, FL, five grandchildren, Jonathon Buerck and Melanie Buerck, both of Las Vegas, NV, Kristen Allen of Rockhill, SC, Wesley Allen, currently serving with the US Army, Siobhan McAuilffe of Ceder Run, NJ and one great grandchild, Tristan Allen, of Rockhill, SC, a sister, Arlene Jannarone and her husband, Thomas, of Point Pleasant a brother, Cortland Ender and his wife, Katherine, of Salisbury, NC a brother, Bruce Ender, of Salisbury, NC and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held on Saturday, September 20th at 10:00 AM at Glenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch. BEATRIZ MATIAS, 83, of NEPTUNE CITY, died Sunday, August 31, 2008 at the Manor-by-the-Sea, Ocean Grove. Born in Mendoza, Argentina, she lived in Brooklyn, NY before moving to Neptune City. Surviving are her friends, Maria and Rev. Joseph D'Angelo of Neptune City. Services were private.
VIRGINIA GRAVES ZELDIN of TINTON FALLS, died on September 1, 2008 at the Seabrook Village after a brief illness. She was 82 years old. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Zeldin graduated from Walnut Hills High School in 1945; DePauw University in 1949; and the University of Chicago School of Social Work in 1950. A resident of Tinton Falls for more than 50 years, Mrs. Zeldin had a long history of employment and community work. Professionally, she was a social worker with the Search School (for autistic children) in Deal and then, for more than 20 years, she worked as a social worker at the Colt’s Neck Public Schools, on the Child Development and Assessment Team. In the 1960’s, Mrs. Zeldin became a naturalist with the Monmouth County Park System in Holmdel, which also gave her the job of painting the wildflowers of central New Jersey. She volunteered with the American Field Service foreign exchange program for years; counseling foreign students who needed help adjusting to host families in New Jersey. She sang in the choir of Christ Church, Shrewsbury for many years. At the Seabrook Retirement Community, where she had moved this past December, she loved tai chi and walking the grounds and gardens. Surviving are her husband of 57 years Richard P. Zeldin of Tinton Falls, New Jersey; a daughter Elizabeth Ann and her partner, Polly Grant, of Cambridge, Massachusetts; and a son R. Shepherd and his wife, Linda Camino, of Madison, Wisconsin. She was predeceased by her parents, P.G. and Mildred Graves, and her brother, Martin Graves, all of Cincinnati, Ohio. A memorial service was held at Christ Church, Shrewsbury, 380 Sycamore Avenue, Shrewsbury, N.J. 07702 on Friday afternoon, September 26, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. Donations may be made in Virginia Zeldin’s memory to the NYU School of Medicine, Development Office, 1 Park Avenue, 10th Floor, NY, NY 10016.
