WILLIAM D. GILLAN, 95, of SHARK RIVER HILLS, Neptune, died Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at home. He was the owner of Gillan Painting Services, Ocean Grove, before retiring. He was a US Army veteran serving with the infantry during World War II. His most prized possession was his combat infantry badge. He was a 72 year member of the First Baptist Church of Asbury Park, serving as a deacon, the head trustee and an usher. Mr. Gillan was an exempt member of the Eagle Hook and Ladder Fire Company having served as Line Officer and President. He was Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 41, Ocean Grove. As a young man he was the captain of a charter fishing boat out of Manasquan. Mr. Gillan was a world class decoy artist and a member of Ducks Unlimited. Born in Ocean Grove, he was a lifelong resident of Ocean Grove and Neptune. He was predeceased by his daughter, Bobbe Joan Larrison Ewart in 1987. Surviving are his wife Thelma Kershaw Gillan, his son, William D. Gillan, III, and his wife, Nancy Ann Gillan, of Boca Raton, FL, his brother, Daniel A. Gillan, of Pompton Plains, six grandchildren, Randy Larrison, Wendy Larrison, Mindy Lawlor, Adam Ewart, Jamie Gillan Miker and her husband, Captain Andrew Miker, and Hans Gillan, three great grandchildren, Devanney Lawlor, Kieran Larrison and Mikaela Larrison. Relatives and friends were invited to call from 10:00 AM with memorial services beginning at 11:00 AM on Saturday morning, October 4th at the First Baptist Church, Third and Grand Avenues, Asbury Park. SHEA B. TAYLOR, 37, of SHARK RIVER HILLS, Neptune, passed away peacefully September 23, 2008 after years of struggling with his disease. A most talented and gifted hair stylist for 20 years, he will be loved and remembered for his big smile and sense of humor. Shea graduated from Neptune High School and cosmetology school in 1989. He was predeceased by his step father, Guy Long, in February and by his grandmother, Barbara Jean Leahy, in 2004. Shea is survived by his loving mother, Carol R. Taylor of Shark River Hills, a sister, Mitzi McGillin, and her husband, Robert, of Neptune City, a daughter, Amber Taylor, a niece and nephew, Erin and Jonah McGillin, a step brother and step sister, Paul and Joanne Long of Naples. FL, and his kitten, Peaches. Friends may call Sunday from 2:00-5:00 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. A funeral service was held on Monday, Sept. 29th at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the family would be appreciated.
ROLAND RUSSLING BROWN, 96, of OCEAN GROVE, entered into eternal peace Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008 at home. Born in West Portal on July 25, 1912, he lived there and in Phillipsburg before retiring to Ocean Grove in 1983. In his younger years, Roland had many jobs, including school bus driver, constable, square dance caller, and train telegrapher with the Pennsylvania Railroad prior to working for the Metropolitan Edison Co. in Easton, Pa. and later transferring to the New Jersey Power and Light Co. in Phillipsburg, where he was a supervisor in the Meter Dept. Roland was the nephew of Lowell S. Brown, a Private in the US Army's Sixth Engineers, when Lowell became the 1st soldier killed in WWI from the Easton, Pa. area in 1918. The Brown-Lynch American Legion Post of Easton bears his name. Roland himself served as a Staff Sgt. in the U.S. Army for five years, stationed in the European Theatre, assigned to Expeditionary Forces in England, Germany and France. He was discharged in 1945. While serving in the Army, Roland was a drill instructor at Fort Monmouth and with the Signal Corps in Europe. Roland was a Master Mason with the Phillipsburg Lodge No. 52, F.&A.M. from 1950 to 1995. He was a current member of Ocean Lodge No. 89, F.&A.M. Roland was an active Christian, attending Wesley United Methodist Church while residing in Phillipsburg, and later St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Ocean Grove. Always involved in the life of the church, he was particularly proud of his involvement with the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove. Through July of 2007 he was honored to be the oldest active member of the Ocean Grove Ushers Association. This past July he was presented with a 25-year pin for his service, and rode with the Ushers' contingent in the July 4th parade. Roland was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Roby Brown, and a granddaughter, Miranda Elizabeth. He is survived by his daughter, Shelley Elizabeth Brown Griffin; son-in-law, Ron Griffin; and grandchildren Brent and Kendall Griffin; along with his brother, Ret. Colonel Raymond S. Brown of San Antonio, Texas; sisters-in-law, Mary Trotter of Knoxville, Tenn., and Ellen Diehl of Lakewood; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Donald and Evangeline Sweitzer of Easton, Pa.; and eleven nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held at Bishop Jane's Tabernacle in Ocean Grove at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, 54 Pitman Ave., P.O. Box 248, Ocean Grove, NJ 07756, would be appreciated. The Ocean Grove Memorial Home, Ocean Grove, was in charge of arrangements.
STELLA NOLAN, 67, of NEPTUNE, died Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. She was a member of the Roman Catholic Church of the Ascension, Bradley Beach. Previously she had been a member of All Saints Parish in Burlington, NJ. Born in Poland, she lived in Burlington before moving to Neptune 20 years ago. Stella was a wonderful and caring mother, grandmother, aunt and sister and a loving wife. Surviving are her husband, John J. Nolan, her eight children, Eileen Nolan and her husband George Cummings, John J. Nolan, IV and his wife Amanda, Cynthia Cannuli and her husband Timothy, Lisa Nolan and her husband Dan Griffin, Kelly Kaufman and her husband William, Michael Nolan and his wife Carol, Victoria Prodeline and her husband Michael and Ryan Nolan, her grandchildren, Brianna, Amanda and Ian Cummings, Stephanie and Alyssa Cannuli, Grace, Anne and Joseph Griffin, Michaila, Riley and Aynsley Kaufman, Michael, Madison and Matthew Nolan and Michael and Andrew Prodeline, her brother Walter Magiera, her sisters, Marysia Magiera and Bernice Walusz, her nieces, Ursula, Claudia, Dorothy and Monica, and her nephews, Walter, Richard, Stanley and David. LEONARD PATRICK PALMERI, Jr., 43, of NEPTUNE, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008 in Florida. He worked as a roofer and sider for various companies. Born in Neptune, he was a lifelong resident of the shore area. He was a loving father and a great friend who will be missed dearly. Surviving are his stepson, Thomas, his mother, three sisters; and his lifelong friend, Gilbert Chelborg. RICHARD PACKER ZELDIN, 90, of TINTON FALLS died Sunday, October 12, 2008 at home, just six weeks after his wife, Virginia, of 57 years. Mr. Zeldin had a distinguished career in scientific and technical book publishing, starting as a travelling salesman for McGraw Hill Book Company where he eventually became general manager. After that, he served as president of the R.R. Bowker Company, publisher of John Wiley and Sons, Inc., and vice president of Moseley Associates, all of New York City. Mr. Zeldin graduated from West Chester University in 1942 then served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy, captaining an LCT at Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was an avid tennis player well into his 80’s, when he was ranked in the top 10 of the USTA over 80 section rankings. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Graves Zeldin on September 1, 2008. Surviving are his daughter Elizabeth Ann and her partner, Polly Grant, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, a son, Shepherd Zeldin and his wife, Linda Camino, of Madison, Wisconsin and his sister, Alice Marcus and her husband John. ROSEMARY CIAVATTA, 73, of Toms River, formerly of OCEAN GROVE, died Monday, October 13, 2008 at the Community Medical Center, Toms River. Rosemary taught at Our Lady of the Valley in Orange and was a manager for National Church Residences, Kearny, where she was named employee of the month many times. Laughter and generosity were her gifts to the world. She was the life of the party and people were happy to be part of her world. She was a woman of great faith and kindness. She and her husband were the former owners of the Honeysuckle Hotel in Ocean Grove. Rosemary was born and raised in South Orange and lived in Ocean Grove before moving to Toms River 5 years ago. She is survived by her husband Nick, her sons, Nicholas, Gerard and Christopher and her grandchildren, Ashley, Christopher, Jack and Michael. Friends were invited to call on Thursday, October 15th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. JEAN LORETTA HUGGINS, of Orlando, Fla., formerly of NEPTUNE, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2008 in Orlando. Mrs. Huggins graduated from Asbury Park High School and received her Associates Degree from Brookdale Community College. Born June 30, 1924 in Sunbury, Pa., she married
Joseph H. Huggins of Neptune on February 3, 1946 and they resided in Neptune for more than 60 years. Jean was a devoted wife and mother and loving grandmother. She was an avid reader and loved travel and wintering in Florida before moving to Orlando in 2007. Surviving are her husband; her son, Stephen Huggins and his wife, Elizabeth, of Orlando, Fla.; her daughter, Patricia Meehan and her husband, John, of West Chester, Pa; and four grandchildren, Sarah and Lindsay Huggins and Eric and Elise Meehan.
