Professor John D. Sweeney of Livingston, formerly of South Orange for many years, died on Wedneday, September 10, 2014 at Inglemoor Nursing Home, Livingston. He was 83 years old.

For half a century John Sweeney was a much loved figure at Seton Hall University. Appointed a professor of English at Seton Hall in 1958, John remained a member of the faculty until his retirement in 2009, teaching a variety of courses in the English Department and for the Honors Program, tutoring in Latin and Greek, and acting in student theatre productions.
John received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and his Masters degree at Columbia University. He was awarded the National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships at Princeton University and SUNY Stony Brook. In 2004, Seton Hall bestowed on him its highest award, the Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid medal for Distinguished Service.
In addition to his considerable scholarly achievements at the university he loved so well, John was a fine and knowledgeable musician. He was a 30 year member of the Union Municipal Band, the Westfield Band, the Montclair Band, the American Steel and Weldry Band, and participated in the "Merry Tuba Christmas" at Rockefeller Center for many years.
Musically, John most cherished being a member of the Essex Shillelagh Pipes and Drums which he joined in 1971. For 10 years he was the band's drum major. He was instrumental in the completion of the sheet music for the "Armed Forces Set" which is used by the Shillelagh's and numerous other pipe bands to this day.
In life John loved above everything else being a father to his sons Gregory and Matthew and he inspired them to follow their musical dreams. John David Sweeney left a mark at Seton Hall, and well beyond it, that few will match and none forget. And he was a piper always.
He is survived by his loving sons Gregory and Matthew Sweeney and his brothers William and Joseph Sweeney.

Alan Caruba Public relations consultant for pest management group; former Morris County journalist, prolific book reviewer and daily blogger known for conservative views on public policy, 77 Alan Caruba, an author, commentator, and humorist, passed away at home on June 15, 2015, at the age of 77. Born in Newark, N.J., from the age of five Mr. Caruba resided in Maplewood, N.J., living there for 62 years until selling his home in 2004 and moving to the Gaslight Commons in neighboring South Orange, N.J. He was a graduate of the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla., class of 1959, after which he served in the U.S. Army for two years before returning to the home which he shared with his parents. Mr. Caruba was the editor of the East Orange Record - a weekly newspaper - until moving on as a reporter for the Morris County Daily Record. For the bulk of his professional life, he was a public relations counselor working with a wide variety of clients. From 1986 until his passing, he represented the New Jersey Pest Management Association, later serving in the same capacity as well for the New York Association. In 1970, a collection of poetry, "People Touch, " was published by Pocket Books. It was followed by a novel and later by two collections of his commentaries, "Warning Signs" and "Right Answers, " both published by Merrill Press. He was a contributor to many magazines and newspapers, writing about a broad selection of topics, but was best known in his senior years as a conservative writer whose daily commentaries were posted on his blog and on many news and opinion websites and blogs. A book reviewer for over 50 years, Mr. Caruba was a founding member of the National Book Critics Circle in 1973, ultimately writing a monthly report on new non-fiction and fiction, "Bookviews, " until his death. Since the 1970s, he was also a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the Society of Professional Journalists. In the 1980s, Mr. Caruba gained an international reputation as a humorist as the creator of a media spoof called The Boring Institute. In this capacity, he published annual lists of the most boring celebrities and films of the years, and was a guest on countless radio shows and also made appearances on television. In the wake of 9/11, he ended the Institute's activities. He also created The National Anxiety Center as a clearinghouse for information about "scare campaigns" to influence public policy and opinion. In this capacity, he was a longtime opponent of environmental and comparable claims. Never married, Mr. Caruba was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Rebecca Caruba. His mother was a cookbook author who taught gourmet cooking for three decades in local adult schools and was also an internationally known authority on wine. His father was a CPA. He is survived by his brother, Robert Caruba Jr.; his nephew, David Caruba, and his niece, Cathy Bridges. At Alan's request, there will be no funeral service. Arrangements are by the Preston Funeral Home of South Orange.

Mr. Sinclair was the beloved husband of Eroilda Medina; devoted father of Darren Noah Sinclair II, Iona Clinton, Tyler Talmadge, and Justin Sinclair; loving son of Jane Coley; dear brother of Terrilyn Moton, Sherrilyn Sinclair, and Chad Coley, and cherished grandfather of Sejal Sinclair. Born in New York City Marie lived in Short Hills from 1968-2008 before moving to Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. She graduated from St. Mary's Nursing School and worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Hoboken.
She was predeceased by her loving husband George P. Hoare Jr. and her brother Michael O'Reilly. She is survived by her devoted children Kathleen Thompson, George P. Hoare III, Tracy Kennedy and Anne Nassar, her siblings Jay O'Reilly, Lenore O'Reilly, Anne Russell and Frank O'Reilly, and her beloved seven grandchildren. .

Township resident Alice Hall Altus, 100, passed away June 20th. Graveside service and burial will be held at Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery.
Mrs. Altus was born in 1912 in West Pittston, Pa. She was a resident of Millburn for 63 years and spent her winters in Pompano Beach, Fla., for more than 35 years.
She graduated from Jefferson College Nursing School in 1934 and worked in New York City hospitals until she entered the Army in 1942. Mrs. Altus served as the Chief Nurse of the Army Hospital Trains Unit which transferred World War II's wounded soldiers arriving on transport ships in New York Harbor to hospitals throughout the country for treatment. She met her husband, Nathan Altus, in the Army and they married
in 1944. Mrs. Altus attained the rank of Captain and was honorably discharged in 1945.
She is survived by her brother, James Hall, of Harvey's Lake, Pa.; her daughter, Cynthia Tompkins of the township; her granddaughter, Jennifer Larner; and two great-grandsons, Brian and Matthew Larner of Potomac Falls, Va.

Linda Beers Bryant was born May 5th, 1951 in East Orange, New Jersey to Walter and Margaret Beers. Margaret was 46, and Walter was 51 with four grown children at the time of her birth, and they would joke that they had their own grandchild. She graduated from Millburn High School in 1969 and spent summers with the family in much loved Spring Lake, NJ. She attended Rosemont College, where through her classmate, Patricia Bryant Bowers, she met her future husband of 13 years, Jim Bryant. Linda and Jim resided in Berwyn, PA where they raised their two daughters Liz and Christina. Linda eventually relocated back to her hometown of Short Hills, where on July 3rd, 2012, she passed away peacefully in her sleep.
Linda was a fun-loving and passionate person who loved the arts and travel. She was often in Philadelphia exploring the latest museum exhibit, performance, or concert. A lover of rock music, she always made sure to see Bruce Springsteen when he came to town. She even went to the Woodstock '94 with her older daughter. Linda was also well known for her compassion and kindness, especially towards those in poverty and stray animals. Over the years, she volunteered at local homeless shelters and participated in fundraisers for various organizations.
Linda is survived by her two daughters Liz Bryant of Jacksonville, FL and Christina Bryant of Long Island City, NY. Her oldest brother Walter Beers pre-deceased her, she is survived by her brother Robert Beers of Clinton, NJ, and sisters Barbara Oberle of Brick, NJ and Elaine Becker of Short Hills, NJ.

Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Ave., Maplewood, N.J., today from 2 to 5 p.m. Born in Madagascar, Mrs. Speranza resided in New York City for 70 years. Cecile spent her entire business career at McKinsey and Company of New York City as an executive secretary to Howard C. Adams and Arch Patton. She began working for the company in 1951 and retired in 1972.
Mrs. Speranza was the beloved wife of the late Joseph Speranza; devoted mother of Diane Driscoll, SSJ., Elaine Pultz, and Joanna Nittolo, and loving sister-in-law of Anthony Speranza and Rose Russo. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
