Harold H. Dugan Jr.
Harold H. Dugan Jr., of Spring Lake, passed away Monday, Feb. 20 at Catonsville Commons in Baltimore. He was 85.

Harold was born in Homestead, Fla. and had resided in Metuchen before moving to Spring Lake in 1971.

A graduate of the class of 1948 from Cornell University, he went on to become the chief structural engineer for Gibbs & Hill Engineering in New York City. While employed there, he was involved with many very large electrical and structural engineering projects throughout the world before retiring in 1971.

He then started a private practice in computerized design of transmission towers and lines.

Harold proudly served the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel in 1975 after 26 years.

He was also a communicant of St. Catharine’s RC Church in Spring Lake.

He was predeceased by his parents Harold H. and Terese McGurk Dugan and his brother Robert D. Dugan.

Surviving are his sister and brother-in-law Maureen and Frank Hunter Jr., of Elkridge, Md.; his sister-in- law, Joan M. Dugan, of Mount Laurel, and 11 nieces and nephews Mimi and Doug Higgins, Bob and Christie Hunter, Jim and Amy Hunter, Lynne Hunter, Maureen Burcher, Kathleen Fullam, Bob and Kathy Dugan, Carol and Jim Adams, Tom and Mildred Dugan, Dan and Holly Dugan and Joan and Troy Peterson.

Arrangements were under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial took place at St. Catharine’s RC Church in Spring Lake. Interment was held in Holy Mount Cemetery, Tuckahoe, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, 801 Eighteenth St. NW, Washington, DC, 20006.

Henry W. Duerkes
Henry W. Duerkes, with family in Manasquan and Wall Township, died Friday, Feb. 24 at the Burnt Tavern Rehabilitation Center in Brick. He was 87.

Born in Red Bank, he lived in Point Pleasant and Brick, before moving to Toms River three years ago.

Mr. Duerkes owned and operated Henry W. Duerkes Heating & AC in Point Pleasant Beach for 20 years before retiring in 2006. He was an WWII veteran of the United States Army. Henry was a three-time Purple Heart recipient and a Prisoner of War. He was also a member of St. Dominic’s Church in Brick.

Mr. Duerkes was pre-deceased by his wife Ida Mary in 2006 and is survived by four sons, James, of Prescott, Ariz., John, of Brick, Jerome, of Brick and Jeffrey, of Sevierville, Tenn; three daughters, Jane Satterly, of Silverthorne, Colo., Judy Thomas, of Toms River and Jennifer Gray, of Manasquan; one brother, James, of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Grace Emmons, of Farmingdale, and Violet O’Shea, of Wall; 13 grandchildren and 12 great- grandchildren.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home in Manasquan. A Mass was held at St. Dominic's Church in Brick. Interment took place at Brigadier General Wm. C. Doyle Veteran Memorial cemetery in Arneytown.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Wounded Warriors, Walter Reed Society, 8901 Wisconsin Ave, Bethesda, Md., 20814.

Pamela Cooke
Pamela Cooke [Warren], formerly of Belmar, entered into eternal rest, surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, Feb. 23, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. She was 67.

Born in Jersey City, Pamela grew up in Belmar. She lived in Long Branch before moving to Eatontown seven years ago.

She was an active member of Saint James Episcopal Church in Eatontown where she was a member of the Altar Society and the Ladies Auxiliary of St. James. She was a devoted wife and loving mother and doting Nana.

Pamela was predeceased by her parents, John P. and Marjorie E. Warren, her brother-in-law Daniel P. Daly, and nephew Mark Warren.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Louis E. Cooke Jr.; loving children, Stephen J. Schibell, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; Amy Rosa and her husband Ricardo, of Oceanport; and Louis E. Cooke, III and his wife Lucy, of Little Silver. She is also survived by her dear brother, Gardner P. Warren, of Chapel Hill, N.C. and her loving sister Susan A. Daly, of West Long Branch, cherished best friend, Barbara Staubitz, and four grandchildren, Liam and Lucas Rosa and Ashlynne and Joseph McFadden; nieces and nephews, Deborah, John, Peter, Jeffrey, Glenn, Kim, Tina, Nicole, Rob and John and many grand-nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Reilly Funeral Home in Belmar. A funeral Mass was held at Saint James Episcopal Church in Eatontown. Committal services were private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Saint James Episcopal Church, 69 Broad St., Eatontown.

Jessie Donaldson Auer
Jessie Donaldson Auer, of Avon-by-the-Sea, joined her beloved Ray and the good Lord peacefully early Sunday, Feb. 12. She was 98.

Jessie immigrated with her two sisters and parents from Troon, Scotland at the age of 9. After graduating from East Orange General Homeopathic Hospital as a registered nurse she began a lifelong journey of taking care of others.

She and her husband Ray settled in Avon-by-the-Sea in 1949 where she lived a long happy life devoted to her family.

Jessie, commonly known as “Gram” was a wonderful, compassionate, caring, strong-willed and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother with an incredible spirit.

Jessie was married to her loving husband E. Raymond Auer who passed away in 1969 doing what he loved, playing golf. Gram too was an avid golfer and bridge player with a fierce competitive spirit. She also loved to travel, but enjoyed being home with her family and devoting her time to them even more. She was a former member of Manasquan River Golf Club and Belmar Presbyterian Church.

Jessie was predeceased by her husband E. Raymond Auer, her parents, Mary and Daniel Donaldson, her sisters, Nancy Bryan and Janet Lee.

She is survived by her most loving daughter and caretaker Janice A. Scrabis, son-in-law Bob Scrabis, of Avon-by-the-Sea, her grandchildren Amy [Scrabis] Bullock and husband Simon, of Bath, United Kingdom; Bobby Scrabis, of Avon-by-the-Sea, Kristin [Scrabis] Fletcher and husband Mark, of Avon-by-the-Sea and her most cherished great-grandchildren who were the lights of her life and brought her so much joy, Isabella Bullock, Mei Scrabis and Abby Fletcher along with nieces and a nephew. She also leaves behind her lifelong best friend, “bridge/card” partner, and neighbor, Aida D’Avella.

Special thanks to Dr. Masada and Pat and Val for their loving and compassionate care, and the Avon Police Department and First Aid Squad for their steadfast dedication and kindness to our community.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Reilly Funeral Home in Belmar. Burial took place at Monmouth Memorial Park in Tinton Falls.

Mary Patricia Lee
Mary Patricia [Dillon] Lee, of Avon-by-the-Sea died Sunday, Feb. 26 at home surrounded by her loving and devoted family. She was 79.

Born and raised in Jersey City, Mary lived in Glen Rock for 38 years before moving to Avon 11 years ago.

Mary was a graduate of Holy Name School of Nursing in Teaneck and for her nearly 40 years as a registered nurse dedicated herself passionately and joyfully to the care of her patients.

She had a long and devoted career at Pollack Hospital in Jersey City, Bayonne Hospital, Ridgewood School System, and for the last 21 years of her professional journey at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.

A reverent and devout Catholic, Mary was a parishioner of St. Catharine’s Church in Glen Rock and St. Elizabeth’s Church in Avon. She supported through time, treasure and talent the Catholic schools that her children and grandchildren attended over the years. She inculcated in her extended family a deep dedication to Catholic education.

Mary was a voracious reader, passing on to her children and grandchildren the exhilaration and replenishment that comes from an immersion in literature. Mary had many memorable moments with her friends and family traveling throughout the United States and Europe and spending time at the Avon beach. Her great joy was her family on whom she showered her loving devotion and serene grace.

Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband and soulmate, John F. Lee Jr. in 2001. She was the precious daughter of the late William and Ruth Dillon and a treasured sister of her late brothers-in-law, Thomas and Joseph Lee.

Surviving are her cherished children; Mary Ann Christopher and her husband George. of Avon, William Lee and his wife Ann Marie, of Wyckoff, James Lee and his wife Elizabeth, of Glen Rock, Elizabeth Bache and her husband Christopher, of Avon. She leaves a rich legacy in the pride and joy of her life - her 11 grandchildren; John, Mary Catherine, Caroline, James, Sean, Megan, Matthew, Mary Beth, Emily, Patrick and Michael.

Mary also leaves the brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law whom she loved so much - Rosemary Lee, Robert and Patricia Lee, Barbara and George Hilla, Donald Lee, Ann Marie and Peter Fabriele, Mary Lee and Roberto Montesinos, and Judith Lee. She will be missed by her many loving nieces and nephews. Mary derived great contentment in caring for her two cats, Kitty and Charlie.

Arrangements were under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. A Funeral Mass will be offered Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catharine’s Church in Spring Lake. Burial will follow in Christ the King cemetery in Franklin Lakes.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Avon First Aid Squad, P.O. Box 3, Avon-by-the-Sea; VNA Health Group, 176 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank; or to St. Catharine School Educational Fund, [c/o Sr. Margo], Second Avenue, Spring Lake.

Martha McBride
Martha McBride, formerly of Manasquan, passed away Monday, Feb. 20 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune with her family by her side. She was 52.

Martha was born in Hoboken and raised in Manasquan. She was a graduate of Wall High School.

Upon graduation Martha enlisted into the U.S. Navy where she served from 1979 until 1982.

Martha has worked for Hinck’s Turkey Farm for over 20 years as a baker. She enjoyed crocheting, photography, cooking and sewing. Family was everything to Martha and she also loved her dogs.

Martha was predeceased by her parents George and Anna DeBenedictis, a sister Anna Sutphen and two brothers George and John DeBenedictis.

She is survived by her husband of 30 years John C. McBride, of Neptune, two sons John McBride II and his girlfriend Rachel Clark, of Jackson and Michael McBride and his wife Rebecca, of Neptune; two sisters Georgiana DeBenedictis and Theresa Wolfe, both of Wall. Martha is also survived by her granddaughter Rose Lynn McBride and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Orender Family Home for Funerals in Manasquan.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at the Church of the Ascension in Bradley Beach. Interment took place at Brig. Gen William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial cemetery in Wrightstown.

Joseph T. Ryan
Joseph T. Ryan, with family in Manasquan, passed away on Monday, Feb. 20 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

He was born in Jersey City to the late Joseph P. and Francis Dwyer Ryan and raised in North Arlington. He graduated from Queen of Peace Grammar School and North Arlington High School.

Joe served in the Army for two years and then attended Pennsylvania Military College on a track scholarship, where he received his bachelor of arts degree. He received his master of arts degree from Rutgers University.

He was a history teacher, cross-country coach and vice-principal at Neptune High School and was a supervisor of student teachers at Georgian Court University. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Asbury Park.

Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Suzanne [nee Maes] and his cherished children; Joseph Jr. and his wife Anne, of Livingston, and Mary Anne Ryan Swenarton, of Asbury Park; his treasured grandchildren, Mary Katherine and Timothy Swenarton and Louis and Matthew Ryan; his brother, Patrick [Terry] Ryan of San Marcos, Calif.; his sister-in-law Mary Maes Plains, of Manasquan, his brother-in-law Leon [Bernadette] Maes, of Ocean Township, and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Buckley Funeral Home in Asbury Park. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Asbury Park. Interment was private.

In lieu of flowers please contribute to the Madonna House Inc., 1401 7th Ave., Neptune.

Rita A. Cavaluzzi
Rita A. Cavaluzzi, of Belmar and Avon-by-the-Sea, died Thursday, Feb. 16 at home surrounded by her family, three days before her 99th birthday.

Born in Jersey City, she overcame childhood polio and went on to play center for the Dickenson High School basketball team. A devoted Yankee fan, her friends and family knew Rita for her strength of character and the sense of humor she carried with her to her final days.

Rita worked as a hostess and bookkeeper for Schrafft’s Restaurants in Manhattan. She and her late husband, Rocco J. Cavaluzzi, operated a delicatessen in Jersey City before moving to Wall Township in 1951, and to Belmar in 1960. She later worked for Steinbach’s Department Store in Asbury Park. She also lived in Avon.

Rita was predeceased by her husband, Rocco; her parents, Charles and Anna Dougherty, and her brother William.

She is survived by her sons Rocco J. Cavaluzzi Jr. and his wife Anna, of Belmar; Joseph Cavaluzzi and his wife Annie, of Lake Como; and her daughter Christine Cavaluzzi and husband Charles Shepard, of Las Vegas.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Reilly Funeral Home in Belmar. A funeral Mass was held at St. Rose Roman Catholic Church in Belmar. Interment took place at St. Catherine’s cemetery in Sea Girt.
