Charles Menard, Jr.
Major General [Ret] Wilfred Charles Menard Jr., of Avon-by-the-Sea, died Monday, Feb. 20. He was 93.
Born in Trenton, he was a life-long resident of the area and a graduate of Cathedral High School and Rider College.
Son of the late Wilfred C. Menard and Bridget [Della] Dewan, General Menard is survived by his wife Beatrice E. Murday Menard, daughters Marilee Menard and Barbara Wolpoff, son-in-law Stan Wolpoff, grandsons Charles Harvey, Benjamin Wolpoff. and David Wolpoff, a niece Michele Lukens and cousins Sister Marie LaSalle Mullen and Mary McCormick Garruba.
He was predeceased by his wife Mary E. [Betty] Wagner Menard and his son Wilfred III.
General Menard entered the armed forces in 1941, commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1942 and separated in 1945 in the rank of Captain. He joined the New Jersey National Guard in 1946 and commanded at the Battalion, Group, and Division Artillery levels. He was recalled to active duty in 1961 for one year with the 112th Artillery Group in the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was promoted to Colonel in 1962, Brigadier General of the Line in 1969 and Major General in 1974.
He joined the Military Department of New Jersey in 1954. In 1967 he was appointed Assistant Chief of Staff of the Department and in 1974 Governor Brendan T. Byrne named him Chief of Staff, a cabinet position, in the rank of Major General to serve as Adjutant General and Commander of the New Jersey Army and Air National Guard. He retired in 1982.
General Menard's military recognitions include the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Service Medal. the Army Commendation Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, the National Guard Bureau Order of the Eagle, the New Jersey Medal of Honor, the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal and the New Jersey Medal of Merit. He was recognized by resolutions of both the New Jersey Senate and Assembly for his outstanding military and civilian service to New Jersey. In 1987 he was inducted into the U.S. Army Field Artillery OCS Hall of Fame.
General Menard was named recipient of the Boy Scouts of America’s Good Guy Award and Rider University named him a Graduate of the Year. He served for a number of years on the board of trustees, Helene Fuld Medical Center.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Reilly Funeral Home. Mass was celebrated at St. Elizabeth Church, and burial took place at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
In lieu of other remembrances, it is requested that donations be given to the Sisters of Mercy Retirement Community at Mount St. Mary, Highway 22, Watchung, or the New Jersey National Guard Militia Museum, 151 Eggert Crossing Road, Lawrenceville.
John Amabile
John Amabile, of Spring Lake Heights, passed away Sunday, April 22 at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune with his devoted family at his bedside. He was 73.
He was born and raised in Jersey City and moved to Spring Lake Heights in 1968, where he has resided for the past 44 years. He played baseball and football at St. Peter’s Prep and Boston College, where he received the Scanlon Award as well as being an honorable mention All-American quarterback.
John started his career as a math teacher and head football coach at Lincoln High School and Dickinson High School in Jersey City. He also coached football at Belleville and Middletown before becoming the head coach at Wall High School in 1977 where he had Central Jersey Group III championships in 1982 and 1983. While coaching track and field at Wall, he coached his sons to state championships in the javelin.
He coached Neptune from 1985-2000 in which time he earned three state championships in 1995, 1997, and 1998. After Neptune he coached at St. John Vianney, in Allentown and most recently at Long Branch. In recent years he was also a scout for the New York Giants.
In his career he had more than 260 wins. He was a positive role model for all of his players and students. He truly cared for the people he coached and helped them on and off the field.
John was a loving husband of 50 years to his wife Sue. They met when they were just 14 and 15 and shared a romance that lasted a lifetime. They were true soul mates. Sue never missed a football game and supported him in his career every step of the way. They enjoyed going for long walks and cooking together. John was the quintessential family man. He always had words of encouragement for his children and supported them in all of their endeavors. His greatest enjoyment was being with his family. He travelled around the country coaching his sons to be All-Americans in the javelin.
His parents John and Marie Caccapardo Amabile, and his sister, Ann Marie Eknoian, predeceased him.
He is survived by his wife Suzanne Brady Amabile; his sons John C. Amabile, of Marlboro and Robert N. Amabile, of Neptune; his daughter Nicole and husband Matt DeMaio, of Spring Lake Heights; his grandchildren Samantha DeMaio, Andrew DeMaio, and Joseph Amabile; and his brother in law Richard Eknoian, of Wall.
John faced his battle with heart disease and his recent diagnosis of cancer with courage and tremendous fight. His positive outlook never wavered and he was always optimistic. In keeping with his caring and charitable nature, the family specifically requests donations to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 1111 Stewart Ave., Bethpage, NY 11714 [Envelopes provided by the funeral home].

will be held on Thursday, April 26 at 11 a.m. at St. Catharine’s RC Church in Spring Lake. Entombment will be held in St. Catharine’s cemetery in Sea Girt.
James F. Herbst
James F. Herbst, with family in Wall Township, passed away Sunday, April 22 at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune. He was 51.
Jimmy was born in Plainfield on Sept. 8, 1960. He was a graduate of Point Pleasant Borough High School. Jimmy previously lived in Point Pleasant before moving to Eatontown two years ago. He had previously worked at Cablevision in Tinton Falls. Jimmy was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Asbury Park.
Jimmy had an upbeat attitude, in spite of all his illnesses, a great sense of humor and was always willing to help his friends or anyone who needed something. He was a great fan of Atlantic City and enjoyed trips there whenever he was able. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Jimmy was predeceased by his father, John P. Herbst, Sr. in 1989, mother, Lillian Reynolds Herbst in 1990 and his brother, John P. Herbst, Jr. in 2001.
He leaves - to cherish his memory - his sisters, Marilyn Acker and her husband, John, Mary Lou Hudson Wendell and her husband, Jim, Anne Marie Herbst and her partner, Rebecca; brother, Peter J. Herbst and his wife, Laurie; his nieces, Susan K. Acker-Walsh and her partner, Tina, Laura Scribellito and her husband, David, Nancy Cagno and her husband, Paul and Kira Herbst; nephews, Matthew C. Hudson and his fiancée, Tara Freeman, Steven B. Hudson and Peter S. Herbst; great niece, Lily Cagno; great nephews, Aidan Acker-Walsh and Lucas Cagno.

will be private. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Asbury Park on Saturday, May 26 at 11 a.m. Donations can be made in his name to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Food Pantry, 805 Pine Street, Asbury Park.
John C. Kallop
John C. Kallop, of Sea Girt, died at home on Tuesday, April 17, following a courageous nine month battle with abdominal cancer. He was 60.
Born in South Orange, his family lived briefly in Middletown then moved to Sea Girt. John was actively involved in Troop 55 of The Sea Girt Boy Scouts, the summer recreational leagues, and the fun available to a young boy at the Jersey Shore amidst a sizeable group of friends.
After graduating from the Ranney School, John spent his undergraduate years at Lafayette College and earned an MBA from Rutgers University. He remained close friends with his beloved DKE brothers from Lafayette throughout his life.
John spent more than 30 years working in the financial services sector. He spent the majority of his career as a senior member of the Capital Markets groups at Prudential Securities, PaineWebber and A.G. Becker/Warburg Paribas Becker, including being Chief Financial Officer and Chief Administrative Officer for the Capital Markets Group and Chief Operating Officer of the Equity Capital Markets Group at Prudential Securities. Always focused on helping others be successful, he was a confidante and mentor for many, providing advice, guidance or an introduction to his professional network.
John was devoted to family and friends, always generous when he saw a need. His giving was well known among those closest to him, most often done anonymously. He took great pleasure in helping others achieve their potential.
John cherished summers in Bermuda, having first visited in 1966. His family spent every summer there and he said his children and The Rat [the baby wrangler] grew up in Bermuda.
An avid historian with near photographic recall of dates and events, he often pointed out errors to published historians and novelists; and was pleased to receive their acknowledgments for his corrections. He was well read and wise in his opinions, passionately interested in politics and relished dynamic debate. A life-long bibliophile, he craved information, always reading multiple books at once.
Predeceased by his father and mother, Harry G. Kallop, Jr. and Anderene Natolia Moreau, he is survived by his wife Monica, son Jahred Christopher, daughter Elizabeth Moreau, sister and brother-in-law Deanie and Gary Walters, of Stratford, Conn.; aunt Leigh Bennett, of Manasquan; uncle and aunt John W. and Lynn Kallop, of Englewood, Fla.; beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Middletown, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 28. Visitation is prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in Harlan Hall at the church.

Genowefa From
Genowefa “Jean” From, with family in Wall Township, passed away on Saturday, April 21 at the home of her daughter with her loving family at her side. She was 94.
Jean and her husband Joe farmed in Paramus for over 50 years. The From family were one of the original farmers in Paramus until the 1950s. From Road is named for the family. She was a member of Annunciation RC Church in Paramus.
Jean was born in Baltimore and moved to Poland with her family when she was 4. She fled to the U.S. at the start of WWII and later married, moved to Paramus, and raised three daughters. In 1984 she relocated to Toms River and spent her last 12 years in Freehold.
Jean is predeceased by her loving husband Joseph E. From.
She is survived by three devoted daughters, Martha From, of Philadelphia, Josephine “Josie” Kokarev and her husband Day, of Berlin V.T., and Marylou From-Smerecznik and her husband Mark, of Wall. Jean was blessed with three grandchildren, Rebecca Stern and Alexander and Victoria Smerecznik.

was celebrated at the Church of the Annunciation in Paramus. Committal took place at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.

Barbara E. Isasi
Barbara E. Isasi, of Belmar, passed away on Tuesday, April 17, at her son’s home in Las Vegas of natural causes. She was 74.
Barbara was born on Nov. 30, 1938 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Margarita and Peter Babich.
She is survived by her four sons, Robert and Jason, of Las Vegas, Peter, of Missoula, Mont., and Thomas, of Belmar; 10 grandchildren, Thomas, Alexis Anthony, Michael, Christopher, Jessica, Stephanie, Jonathan, Arianna and Dominique.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her visitation on Saturday, April 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Reilly Funeral Home in Belmar. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.
She is irreplaceable and will be greatly missed.
Sophie F. Jackson
Sophie F. Jackson, of Brielle, died Friday, April 20 at Ocean Medical Center, in Brick. She was 86.
Born in Newark, Mrs. Jackson has lived in Brielle since 1983. She was a loving wife, good mother and grandmother.
She was predeceased by her husband, Captain Richard Jackson, in 2004.
She is survived by her sons, Robert Jackson, of Brigantine, Thomas Jackson, of Belfast, Ireland, and Joseph Jackson, of Wall, and her daughters, Barbara Ellen Lario, of Egg Harbor Township, and Anne Marie Jackson, of Manasquan. She is also survived by four Grandchildren, Lisa, Joe, Niki and Christine.

Kenneth Edwin Runyon
Kenneth Edwin Runyon, formerly of Wall Township, passed away on Saturday, April 21 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was 67.
Mr. Runyon retired from the Asbury Park Press after many years in distribution and before retirement worked security department in the Neptune offices. He was a U.S. Army Veteran during the Vietnam War from 1964 -1967 and while posted in Korea, he met his lifelong love, Ok-Sun.
He was a member of the VFW of Neptune No. 2639 and a member of the Teamsters Union. Although he enjoyed The New York Yankees, NASCAR, and The Dallas Cowboys, Mr. Runyon’s greatest love was that of his family, especially his granddaughter.
Born in Neptune, he grew up in Wall and lived in Long Branch before moving to Ocean Township in 1988.
He was predeceased by his parents Edwin and Flora Runyon.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 44 years Ok-Sun [Pak] Runyon; daughter Suzanne Behar and her husband Marc of Ocean Township; brother Paul L. Runyon and his late Linda, of Toms River; and sister Karen M. Doebe, also of Toms River; and his granddaughter Sophia Behar, of Ocean Township. He also leaves four brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law, 13 nephews and many great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends as well as two predeceased brothers-in-law.
Arrangements were under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. Entombment was held at Woodbine cemetery in Oceanport.
