George Harrington
Lakewood resident George Davis Harrington passed away on Tuesday, April 22 after a heroic struggle fighting the effects of ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
He was the organist for the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity in Spring Lake, donating his time and talent to help preserve that historic church and organ.
George was born March 28, 1948 to Vera and Davis Weld Harrington in Arlington, Mass. Music was an important part of George’s life; it was the thread that bound together all the things that defined who he was. He started playing the piano by ear at the age of four and went on to master not only the piano, but also the organ, guitar, bagpipes and the harpsichord which he built by hand and tuned by ear.
He was a member and officer of the Monmouth Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. George was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts and held masters degrees from Tufts, Simmons and the University of Nice in France. He worked as a linguist for the State Department in Paris during the ‘70s and was an interpreter for Henry Kissinger at the Paris peace talks at the end of the Vietnam War. After returning to the states, he worked first in Boston and then ran a bilingual education program on the Canadian border in Maine. He lived for several years in Dark Harbor, Maine, on Isleboro, and it was there that he met his future wife, Nancy Carson, doing what he loved most, playing the Steinway piano at the Isleboro Inn. After moving to New York City in 1985 to be with Nancy, George worked for a short period of time as an interpreter at the UN and as a foreign language teacher in the public schools. He also worked as an independent translator, doing everything from oil contracts to airline menus. Nine years ago, George and Nancy moved to Four Seasons, Lakewood from Shark River Hills, and he truly loved the friends he made there. A man of many interests, George grew bonsai and African violets, built ship models, created origami and antique furniture reproductions and prided himself on doing the Sunday Times crossword puzzle in ink. He loved using his language skills to fool people into thinking he was a real Parisian.
In addition to his wife Nancy, George is survived by his step-children, Bonnie Jean Deroski of Rumson, Stephen Carson Deroski and his wife, Anna, of Chico, Calif., and David Wyatt Deroski, of New York City. He also leaves his granddaughter, Shelly, of Rumson, who was the joy of his life, as well as his grandson, Donovan, of Chico, Calif. He leaves a brother, David, of Suffolk, Va.; and two sisters, Ann, of Rockport, Mass., and Faith, of Keene, N.H. Last but not least, George will be sorely missed by his beloved Norfolk terrier, Penny.
A funeral and time to remember George will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3 at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Third and Monmouth avenues, Spring Lake.
In lieu of flowers, please give to the Joan Dancy and PALS, Riverview Medical Center, 1 Riverview Plaza, Red Bank, 07701 to support others suffering from this dreadful disease, or to The Church of the Holy Trinity, P.O. Box 317, Spring Lake, 07762 to aid in the restoration project.
