Douglas P. Abel
Douglas P. Abel, 59, of Spring Lake Heights, passed away at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune on Thursday, May 17. He was 59.

Doug was born in New York and grew up in Bergenfield. He later lived on Staten Island and in Las Vegas, before moving to Spring Lake Heights five years ago. He was a graduate of Bergen Catholic High School, Oradell, and attended Merrimack College. He had worked in the financial industry before illness forced him to retire.

Doug was an avid sports fan, enjoyed reading, and spending time with his pets. He also supported A.L.S. causes, after having lost his beloved wife, Grace, to the disease, in 2006. It was then that Doug moved to the Jersey Shore, where he found happiness spending time at the beach.

In addition to his wife Grace [Aliseo], Doug was predeceased by his parents, Michael C. and Margaret [Barry] Abel.

He is survived by his sister, Valerie Abel, of Spring Lake Heights, and her partner, Brian Williams; as well as his cousins, Barry O’Connell, Patrick O’Connell, Mary Abel Price, and Michael Abel, and their families.

Arrangements were under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. Cremation was private.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Joan Dancy & Pals [People with ALS Support Group], Riverview Medical Center, 1 Riverview Plaza, Red Bank, would be appreciated.

Emidio Ciccone
Emidio Ciccone "Mid", of Belmar, passed away Sunday, May 20, at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. He was 91.

Emidio was born in Teora, Avellino, Italy and emigrated to the United States in 1929. He resided in Newark and then in Belleville. Mid and his wife spent summer vacations in Belmar since the 1960s before retiring permanently to the Jersey shore in 1997.

Emidio was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran, starting out in the Signal Corps at Fort Monmouth in 1942, then serving in the Air Transport Command 19th Weather Squadron during World War II, maintaining weather stations throughout Africa and Arabia rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

After the war, he worked at a succession of companies including J. H. Scharff, Mohawk Electric, Walter Kidde, Singer, Lionel and Wolock & Lott. He held a First Class Radio Operators License and a patent for fire alarm systems. Mid was an amateur radio operator WA2FSX, member of Belmar Wall VFW Post 2620 and a supporter of Camp Evans InfoAge.

His hobbies included radio electronics and photography, and he had a keen appreciation for history, especially that of industry and technology. Mid will be most remembered for his picture taking, sharp memory, his engaging conversations, his story-telling, and his notes of advice to family members attached to newspaper clippings.

Emidio was predeceased by his parents Nicola and Maria Cordasco Ciccone and his stepmother Anna Apice Ciccone who raised Emidio from a very young age, and his brother Alexander Ciccone.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Victoria Ciccone [nee Meccia]; son Jeffrey, of Absecon and Belmar; son Scott and his wife Jill, and grandchildren Nicholas Emidio and Mia Renee, all of Lawrenceville and Brielle; his sisters-in-law Gladys, Lena, Nancy, Phyllis, Jane, Joanne and Marie, and brothers-in-law Harold and Christopher; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat Buddy.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, May 25 at 10 a.m. at St. Rose RC Church in Belmar. Burial will follow in St. Anne’s cemetery in Wall.

Josephine Wymbs Reilly
Josephine Wymbs Reilly, of Spring Lake, passed away Monday, May 21 at her residence with her family at her bedside. She was 89.

Born and raised in North Bergen, Josephine had resided in Spring Lake for 54 years. As a resident of Spring Lake, Josephine was active in the Spring Lake Woman’s Club and as a longtime faithful Communicant of St. Catharine’s and St. Margaret’s Parish.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Raymond Patrick Reilly in 2005, and her two brothers Frank and John Wymbs.

Josephine is survived by her loving children Patrick and wife, Spring Lake Councilwoman Priscilla Reilly, Raymond P. and Tamar J. Reilly, of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Maureen Luckett-Tuvey and husband Michael Tuvey, of Wall, and Kathleen Siciliano, of Brick; her 11 grandchildren Patrick Reilly Jr., William Reilly Jr., Jeffrey Luckett, Kimberly Tuvey, Daniel Siciliano, Nicole Reilly, Erin Reilly, Raymond P. Reilly III, Star Schein, David Tuvey and Taylor Cowan; and 12 great grandchildren.

Arrangements were under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 24 at 11 a.m. at St. Catharine’s Church in Spring Lake. Entombment will be in St. Catharine’s cemetery in Sea Girt.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Lupus Foundation of America, NJ Chapter, P.O. Box 1184, Springfield 07081.

Charles Raymond Herbert
Charles Raymond Herbert, of Brielle, passed away on Friday, May 18 surrounded by his family at the caring hands of the staff at Geraldine Thompson Care Center in Wall. He was 80.

Mr. Herbert retired from NJ Bell in Point Pleasant in 1988. Ray was a 1950-1951 graduate of Manasquan High School. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran during the Korean War. Mr. Herbert was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan and was a deacon, on the session, on the property commission and the Men’s prayer group at the church. He belonged to the North Shore Antique Club, The Buick Club of America and was an exempt member of the South Wall Fire Company. Ray enjoyed golfing and playing tennis and was an expert in woodworking and furniture repair.

Born in Brielle, he raised his family in Wall before returning to Brielle 28 years ago. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed.

Mr. Herbert was predeceased by his brothers Albert and Frederick Herbert and sisters Mary V. Asay and Dorothy Mae Herbert.

Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years Gail Ann Stires Herbert; son Kenneth Raymond Herbert, of Jackson, daughters Teresa Lynn Helmka and her husband Frank, of Wall, Louise Ann Herbert, of Jackson, and Sharon Marie Canada and her husband William F., of Oxford, Ala. He also leaves his beloved grandchildren Jillian Elizabeth, Cody Ray, Travis Raymond, Randy Ray, and Caleb J. as well as several nieces and a nephew.

Arrangements were under the direction of the the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. Interment was held privately.

Donations may be made in his name to the First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan, 16 Virginia Ave., Manasquan.

Salim Fayad
Salim Fayad, of Wall Township, passed away on Wednesday, May 16 at Meridan Subacute Rehabilitation in Wall.

Although he will be most loved and remembered as a father, grandfather, brother and husband, he had another special legacy. He was a phenomenal math educator, that taught mathematics on two continents. Without exaggeration, everywhere Salim Fayad went, he ran into a former student that said “you were the best teacher I ever had, ” including such places as London, England. He was the author of a four-volume math textbook and he received many accolades, among them New Jersey Teacher of the Year.

With his love of math, perhaps he would like to think of his final journey as traveling through infinity. He was special and will be terribly missed.

Arrangements were under the direction of Orender Family Home for Funerals in Manasquan. A mass of Christian burial was held at St. Peter’s Church in Point Pleasant Beach. Cremation was private.

In lieu of flowers, the family has set up a fund for “The Salim H. Fayad Distinguished Mathematics Educator” at Red Bank Catholic High School. The funds will be used to attract a gifted math teacher to the school, in the hopes of instilling the love of math in many children. Donations may be made to RBC-Salim H. Fayad Distinguished Mathematics Educator Fund, Red Bank Catholic High School, 112 Broad St., Red Bank.

Leslie R. Rankin
Leslie R. Rankin, formerly of Brielle, died Thursday, May 17 at his home. He was 83.

Born in Spring Lake, he lived in Brielle and Manasquan, before moving to Toms River 55 years ago.

Mr. Rankin was a electrical supervisor for Naval Weapons Station Earle for 30 years before retiring. Leslie enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a Korean War veteran.

Mr. Rankin was pre-deceased by his wife Beverly Anne in 2006 and is survived by his son, Frank Rankin Sr. and his wife Kathleen, of Jackson; son-in-law, Thomas Finelli Jr. and his wife Katherine, of Brick; nine grandchildren, Thomas III and his wife Melissa, Victoria, Danny, Jack, Ryleigh, Devlyn, Evelyn, Harmony and Frank Jr.; and his great grand daughter Emma.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home in Manasquan. Cremation was private.

Ethel S. Hart
Ethel S. Hart, of Manasquan, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 21 at her home. She was 79.

Born and raised in Plainfield, she lived in Westfield before moving to Manasquan 12 years ago. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, aunt and grandmother.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Robert; daughter Mary Catherine Rygiel, of Brick; son and wife, William and Rosa Hart, of Denville; and daughter and husband Diane and Howard Burack, of New Albany, Ohio. She is also survived by her brother, Joseph Stubits and wife Jean; sister Catherine and husband Gene Hallock; and sister Gini Finger. She also leaves behind three grandchildren in addition to close family members, Lorraine, Jim, Bina, and Paul Hallock.

One of her true loves was caring for her grandchildren and grandnieces. Elissa, Nick and Olivia, of New Albany, Ohio, and Sophia and Kelsey Hallock, of Allenwood, will miss her nurturing love and guidance.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 27 at 2 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. Friends are invited to call on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Frank A. Skiba
Frank A. Skiba, 85, of Brick, with family in Point Pleasant, passed away on Saturday, May 26, at Ocean Medical Center in Brick.

He was born in Elizabeth, and has lived in Brick for the past 58 years. He was a Machinist with the Singer Manufacturing Company before his retirement. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, and was a member of the VFW Post 8867. He was a past President of the Holy Name Society of Sacred Heart Church and a volunteer fireman and life member of the Mantoloking Fire Department.

Frank is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn Skiba.

He is also survived by his six children and their spouses: Chris Skiba, David and Brigid Skiba, Lynn and Charles Scalzo, Judy and Russ Haug, Susan and Chuck Dwyer, and Sheryl and Dean Lombreglia.

Frank is also survived by his 13 grandchildren and their spouses: Dawn and Adam Cheek, Stacy and Kimberly Haug, William C. Dwyer IV, Audra Scalzo, Danielle and Jason Marsch, Michael Dwyer, Clint Skiba, Gregory Scalzo, Eric Haug, Drew Skiba, Briann Skiba, Nicky Lombreglia, and Kenny Lombreglia. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Sierra Marsch, Madison Cheek, Lucas Cheek, Ruby Haug, and Violet Haug.

Weatherhead Young Funeral Home, Brick, was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in St. Catharine cemetery in Sea Girt.

Grace Mary Cocomazza Trezza
Grace Mary Cocomazza Trezza, 89, of Point Pleasant, passed away, Sunday, May 27.

She was born in San Giovanni, Rotonda, Foggia, Italy and came to the United States as a very young child. Grace was raised in Utica, N.Y., by her late parents, Michael and Antoinette Cocomazza and moved to New Jersey during her early twenties.

During the course of her life, she worked as a federal and state civil servant, ending her career with the NJ State Office of Disability Determinations, Newark. She then retired to Point Pleasant.

Grace loved classical music, opera, dancing, and was an avid reader. She was a communicant of Saint Dominic Parish, Brick.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert in 1962 and also by her brother, John; sister, Angelina; and brother-in-law, Ralph Vendetti.

Surviving are her daughter, Georgette Johnson of Brick; son, Robert Trezza and his wife Mary of Lincoln Park; granddaughter, Gina Cece and her husband Gerald of Point Pleasant; sisters, Nancy Indolfi of Utica, N.Y., Jean Trombetta and her husband Joseph of Whitesboro, N.Y.; and sister-in-law, Ann Cocomazza of Utica, N.Y. Also surviving are several wonderful nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.

Pable Evertz Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, was in charge of arrangements. Today, Friday, June 1, at 9 a.m., Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Dominic Church, Brick, followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

As an expression of sympathy, donations made in her memory to The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, would be appreciated.
