Marion Elisabeth Newbery
Marion Elisabeth Newbery, 85, passed away peacefully at her home on Sept. 7.
Marion was a proud lifelong resident of Belmar.
She was a member of the Belmar Volunteer Hook and Ladder Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary. She retired from the Belmar municipal office after almost 20 years as an accounts clerk.
Prior to this she worked at Camp Evans and briefly in Philadelphia supporting the war effort during WWII.
She had also been employed by the NJ State Unemployment Office and the office of the Spring Lake Golf and Country Club.
Marion was a graduate of Belmar Elementary School and a 1943 graduate of Asbury Park High School where she was a competitive swimmer.
Marion sought to live life to its fullest and that she did. She was a talented oil painter, loved reading, poetry, art, music, history, the ocean and travel. She traveled extensively throughout the U.S., made multiple tours of Europe and cruised the Caribbean, Alaska, South America and the Panama Canal.
She was predeceased by her Swedish immigrant parents, Agda Elisabeth and Newton Severius Johnson, her devoted husband and childhood sweetheart, Harvey Robert Newbery in 1990, her loving step grandson, Peter Arthur Bothner III who died this past February, and she lost her beloved dog, Neddie in June.
She made him promise to wait for her at the Rainbow Bridge and we are sure he did, as their bond was special and his wait wasn’t long.
Marion is survived by her son Robert C. Newbery, his wife Randi and their two sons, Richard and Robert, of Livingston. She is also survived by her daughter, Joyce E. Bothner, her husband, Peter A. Bothner, II and their two children John and Kerstin, all of Brick.
There was not a more loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother or friend and she will be greatly missed. A void is left in the hearts of those who loved her and whom she loved in return.
She wished to thank both Dr. John Runback, of Holy Name Hospital for giving her hope by using RFA to destroy her tumors and Dr. Sang Sim of Monmouth Medical Center for the follow up radiation that in combination stopped the cancer in its tracks. They gave her the hope, encouragement and compassion that others would not and allowed her to live fully for the last three years of her life and for that we were all grateful. The cancer never spread nor took her life but she died of cardiac arrest.
At her request, a private service was held at the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. Burial
was on Sept. 13 at the BG William C. Doyle Memorial cemetery in Arneytown, alongside her beloved husband, H. Robert Newbery and surrounded by those who loved her most, including her caregiver whom she loved dearly.
