Gertrude Rossetti
Gertrude Rossetti who, at age 107, was undoubtedly the oldest resident of Manasquan, passed away at home on Thursday, June 23.

Formerly of Westfield, she moved in 1997 to live year round at her beach cottage which she and her husband purchased in 1941.

The cottage still bears its original name of “Bide-a-Wee, ” Scottish for “stay a while.”

Mrs. Rossetti stayed for more than “a while.”

Mrs. Rossetti was employed as a colorist for a design studio for custom calendars many years ago.

In 1933, as a young mother of a year-old daughter she was injured on a sidewalk in Newark by a vehicle that jumped the curb and pinned her up against a store wall.

Undeterred by this adversity she never gave in to her handicap, plunging ahead with a life filled with energy and unstoppable determination.

She stood shoulder-to-shoulder with her husband Bill to pitch in on home improvement projects.

She joined with her neighbors to clean Manasquan’s North end beach every Memorial Day in the 1940s.

She retained complete mental capability throughout most of her super, super senior years.

She had memories with a total recall of events, such as the pandemic of 1918.

In 1913, days after her eighth birthday in April, she was awakened at night by newsboys shouting, “Extra, Extra-the Titanic sinks.”

She was present at the opening day of the completion of the Manasquan Inlet in 1931, and watched the large numbers of convoys of U.S. ships off shore during WWII.

Gertrude retained a vivid memory of seeing the Hindenburg airship overhead on May of 1937 when it was diverted from landing at Lakehurst because of poor weather.

She and her family returned home later and were stunned to learn of the horrific accident that befell the dirigible when eventually made a second try at Lakehurst.

Gertrude lived alone after the death of her husband Bill in 1994, attending to all household tasks.

She read the newspaper every day to keep abreast of current events and maintained complete comprehension of the world around her, especially politics.

But in October of 2009, she suffered a stroke which completely incapacitated her and she had to rely on nursing caregivers for the remainder of her life.

Eventually, she became a particular favorite of the wonderful

“Meals on Wheels” volunteers who banded together to fete her with a surprise party on her 105th birthday.

Included were 105 handmade birthday cards from the children of Manasquan Elementary School.

One of the volunteers, Barbara Reynolds and her husband Bill, of the First Aid Squad, continued to visit each Christmas dressed as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus.

All these local friends have proven that our oldest residents are not forgotten.

Gertrude is predeceased by her husband, Bill, and is survived by her daughter, Dolores [Dee] Twaddell and her husband, Gordon O., of Manasquan; grandson, Gordon Wm. Twaddell, of Millersville, Md.; granddaughters, Jan Andrews and her husband, Mark, of Liverpool, N.Y., Jill Twaddell and husband Victor Fleck of Avenel; and two great-granddaughters, Corinne and Megan Andrews.

Mother’s wish for no formal services is being honored.

A private interment gathering was held in Fair View cemetery in Westfield next to her dear husband Bill and her sister Violet, who Gertrude and Bill raised when her parents died at an early age.

Memorial contributions to the Manasquan First Aid Squad would be appreciated.
