George Walsh
Capt. George “Blackie” Walsh, 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Newcomb, N.Y. on Friday, Aug. 13, in the company of those he loved.
George Walsh was born on July 26, 1925 in Boston, MA. He served in the United States Navy in World War II, where he was a welter-weight boxing champion.
Capt. Blackie owned and operated the fishing vessel The Piper, out of Point Pleasant for many years.
George moved to Newcomb, N.Y. 27 years ago, where he was active in the Newcomb Volunteer Fire Company and was awarded Newcomb’s Citizenship award for his work with senior citizens.
George will be remembered as larger than life with a passion for many things, most notably his family, Genny Cream Ale and music. He will be missed terribly and loved in perpetuity.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 55 years, Catherine Mokracek Walsh; four daughters, Teri Sanchez, Seaford, NY, Sharon McCarthy, Point Pleasant, NJ, Colleen Walsh, Newcomb, NY and Tamara Walsh, Newcomb, NY; two sons, Harry Gorski, Brick, NJ and Darin Gorski, San Diego, CA; two son-in-laws, Russell McCarthy, Point Pleasant, NJ, and Jody Larabee, Newcomb, NY; two daughter-in-laws, Linda Gorski, Brick, NJ and Claudia Gorski, San Diego, CA; seven fabulous grandchildren,
Scott Hlavaty and his wife Jolene, Kerry Hlavaty, Katherine McCarthy, Kassandra McCarthy, Chelsea Walsh, Corrinne Gorski, Lauren Gorski and Hunter Larabee; one granddaughter on the way, Piper Larabee; one awesome great-grandaughter, Reece Hlavaty; one brother, Jack Hanney and his wife Faith, NH; three sisters, Barbara Sembler and her husband Ronald, VA, Anne Brower and her husband Ted, Brick, NJ, Nancy Figner, Brick, NJ; one brother in law, Bruce “Mickey” Mokracek and his wife, Trish, Point Pleasant, NJ, and three sister in laws, Gladys Mokracek, Margaret Walsh and Peggy Hanney; many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and a large number of very interesting friends.
He was predeceased by his three brothers, Phillip and James Walsh and Paul Hanney.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Newcomb Volunteer Fire Company in George’s name.
A fall memorial service is planned.
Lawrence G. Robbins Jr.
Lawrence G. Robbins Jr., 85, of Point Pleasant, passed away Thursday, Aug. 12 at his home.
Born in Passaic, he had lived in Belleville and Ramsey and has resided in Point Pleasant since 1962.
Larry had worked as an insurance adjuster and retired from Transamerica, New York City.
A United States Navy, World War II veteran, he was also a H.O. model trains enthusiast.
He was predeceased by his wife of over sixty years, June Bohrer Robbins; and by his son, David.
Surviving are his two sons, Paul B. Robbins of Naples, FL and Lawrence G. Robbins, III and his wife Robyn of Point Pleasant; his sister, Tootie Smith; three grandchildren, Tristan Edwards and her husband Robert, Seychelle Blewett, and John Robbins; and five great-grandchildren, Jake and Devan Polhemus, John Blewett, and Austin and Will Edwards.
Military honors and interment were held Tuesday, Aug. 17, at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. There were no calling hours.

Madelyn L. Koller Smith
Madelyn L. Koller Smith, 93, of Point Pleasant, passed away Saturday, Aug. 14.
Born and raised in Elizabeth, she had lived in Roselle Park and moved to Point Pleasant in 1983. In her youth, Mrs. Smith had worked as secretary for the president of the Prudential Insurance Company, Newark.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Russell Smith and by her son, Kenneth Smith.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Elly Smith of Brick; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Amy, and Carrie; and two great-grandchildren, Gabriella and Joshua.
On Wednesday, Aug. 18, a graveside service, followed by interment, was held at Evergreen Cemetery, Hillside. There were no calling hours.
Arrangements were under the care of the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant.
Patrick D. Burke
Patrick D. Burke, 48, of Point Pleasant, formerly of Spring Lake Heights, passed away at his home Tuesday, Aug. 10. Patrick was born in Point Pleasant and raised in Spring Lake Heights and moved to Point Pleasant 20 years ago. He graduated from Manasquan High School in 1980.
Patrick worked in commercial construction and was a member of the Carpenter Local 2250, Red Bank. He loved boating, boat racing and was an avid Miami Dolphins fan.
Patrick was a communicant of St. Martha’s Church, Point Pleasant. Patrick was predeceased by his parents William Burke in 1974 and Dororthy Burke in 1986.
He is survived by his wife Patty Burke and two children Heather and Brittany Huff all of Point Pleasant; three brothers and their spouses, Billy Burke of Wall, Jay and Linda Burke of Brielle and Michael and Denean Burke of Wall; a sister and her spouse Mary Carol and Chris
Pirl of Point Pleasant Beach. Patrick is also survived by his in-laws, Louise and Hank Monteforte of Point Pleasant and two sisters-in-law. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The Orender Family Home for Funerals, Manasquan, was in charge of arrangements. Interment
was private.
Carole D. Sachse
Carole D. Sachse, formerly of Spring Lake, died of complications from cancer at the home of her daughter, Christen Sachse-Vasquez, in Closter, on Jan. 18.
Carole was a truly wonderful mother/grandmother to her children Darren, Nicole and Chris and her grandchildren Chelsea, River, Cierra, Aidan and Conor.
She was born in Hannibal, Mo., in 1944 and learned about the power of love and humor from her fantastic mother Marion.
Carole instilled incredible power, enthusiasm and a zest for life in her children and all those she touched.
She was an incredibly brave and inspiring woman who kept her dignity, quick wit and sense of humor to the end.
“Do your best, forget the rest” was her motto and she supported her children in all they endeavored to take on and then encouraged them to do even more.
To friends and family whom wish to celebrate her life in a positive and uplifting way, memorial services will be held at O’Brien Funeral Home at 2028 Hwy. 35, in Wall, on Saturday Jan. 22 from 1-3 p.m.

Christopher Anthony Matlosz
Christopher Anthony Matlosz, 27, of Manchester Township, with family in Wall, passed away Jan. 14 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, in Neptune.
Christopher was born in Elizabeth and lived in Rahway, Howell and Lakewood before settling in Manchester in 2008 where he was planning on starting his life with his future bride. Christopher was a graduate of Howell High School class of 2000. He received an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Brookdale Community College in Lincroft. He graduated from the 69th Class of the Monmouth County Police Academy. Chris was employed by the Lakewood Township Police Department since August of 2008. Prior to that, Chris was employed by Freehold, Englishtown, Long Branch, and Manasquan police departments.
He is survived by his mother Jane Caliao, of Howell and his loving fiance Kelly Walsifer, of Manchester. He was predeceased by his father Anthony “Buddy” Matlosz, who departed this life just three short months ago. He is survived by a brother, Adam Matlosz, of Ewing.
He was predeceased by his grandparents, Anthony P. Matlosz and Hermine Matlosz. He is survived by his Uncle Thomas, of Union, his aunts, Susan Kelly, of Middletown, Jean Goldberg, of Wheeling, Ill. and several cousins. He also leaves behind his future mother-in-law Debra Krauszer and future sister-in-law Kristin Walsifer, both of Wall, his two loving dogs Stosh and Apollo, and thousands of brothers and sisters in the law enforcement community.
Chris and Kelly were scheduled to be married
on April 21, 2012, at St. Rose, in Belmar.
He will be remembered by his infectious smile and desire to make the world a better place, his awesome sense of humor and ability to be a prankster.
Lakewood Funeral Home, Howell, was in charge of arrangements.
A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday at noon at St. Mary of the Lake Church, Lakewood. Burial
will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lakewood.

Joan S. Nicklin
Joan S. Nicklin of Brielle passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 11 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.
Joan was born on Nov. 5, 1920 in New York City to the late Walter and Ada Singleman. She moved to Brielle with her family in 1965. Joan was a teacher for almost 40 years, and taught at Brielle Elementary School for 30 years. It was there she taught mostly first grade. Joan was a member of St. Uriel’s Episcopal Church, Sea Girt. She was a devoted wife and mother who loved music, the theater and teaching children.
Joan was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Albert Nicklin in 1988, and by her brother Walter Singleman, Jr. She is survived by three sons, Lawrence, Douglas and John Nicklin, all of Brielle, and her daughter, Nancy Gegenheimer, and her husband Gregg of Pineville, Pa. Joan is also survived by her beloved granddaughter Kati Gegenheimer.
Arrangements are under the direction of Orender Family Home for Funerals, Manasquan.

William H. Cordes
William H. Cordes, 85, of Brick, with family in Manasquan, passed away peacefully at Ocean Medical Center, in Brick, on Monday.
He was born and raised in Irvington, spending his summers in Belmar. In 1943, William enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served as a Sergeant in World War II. After marrying, he and his wife settled down in Westfield, serving as members of the First Congregation Church of Westfield for 48 years. They moved to Brick 11 years ago. William was a loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Gloria; his daughter, Dale M. Gehrlein and her husband Lane, of Naples, Fla.; his son, William R. Cordes and his wife Kate, of Scotch Plains; his daughter, Nancy C. Schneider and her husband William, of Janesville, Wis.; his brother, John F. Cordes, of Manasquan, and six grandchildren, Christopher, Jessica, Jillian, Ashley, Jay and Ian.
Visitation will be on Friday from 2-6 p.m. at Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, in Manasquan, 16 Virginia Ave., Manasquan. Private cremation will follow.

Rachel R. Garfall
Rachel R. Garfall, 86, of Wall Township died on Jan. 18.
Born in Amsterdam, N.Y., she lived in Plainfield from 1950 moving to Neptune in 1955, she moved to Wall Township in 1972, and to Mt. Laurel in 1992, before returning to Wall Township in 2010.
Mrs. Garfall was a bookkeeper for her late husbands company A L Garfall Inc. of Belmar, a manufacturer of men’s and boys outerwear from 1950 - 1972. Mrs. Garfall enjoyed being active in her community, serving as a volunteer at Jersey Shore University Medical Center of Neptune, the Parent Teacher Association of Shark River Hills, and the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School of Asbury Park, and the hospital auxiliary at Deborah Hospital of Browns Mills. Mrs. Garfall was also known for a love of cooking that kept her family, neighbors and area children well fed.
Predeceased by her beloved husband Alfred in 1990, Mrs. Garfall is survived by her loving children Alfred Garfall Jr. and his wife Debra, of Voorhees, and Rachel Javier and her husband Adamo, of Wall, a sister Nellie DiBlasi and her husband Frank. Mrs. Garfall is also survived by her cherished grandchildren Dr. Alfred L. Garfall III and his wife Jennifer, Nicholas and Gianna Garfall, and her great- grandson Alexander Garfall.
Visitation will be held on Friday evening 6-9 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 2652 Highway 138 westbound, Wall Township, adjacent to the Rt. 18 north entrance. On Saturday at 9:30 a.m. a funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Mt. Carmel Church, 805 Pine St., Asbury Park, those attending are invited to go directly to the church. Entombment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Rt. 66, Neptune.
