Garet J. Pilling
Garet J. Pilling, 75, entered eternal life on Saturday, Jan. 15 with his devoted family at his bedside.

Born in Neptune, he resided in Brielle for many years, serving as mayor during the early 1970s. He later moved to Mantoloking and spent winters in his Tequesta, Florida home. Gary owned and operated Park Steel & Iron Company, Neptune City for 55 years, furnishing fabricated steel for countless projects mostly in New Jersey but also worldwide. After graduating from Admiral Farragut in Pine Beach, he attended Hobart College in New York State, where he received his B.A. and was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. Gary served in the Army Reserves from 1956 to 1960. As a member of the Bay Head Yacht Club, Manasquan River Golf Club and the Jupiter Hills Country Club he spent many years sailing, golfing and playing tennis. An avid pilot, gardener, and motorcyclist, Gary also enjoyed fishing, cycling, skiing, and traveling. Gary was a Mason, and as a devout Episcopalian, he regularly attended St. Uriel the Archangel Church, Sea Girt. He was a hospital volunteer at Jupiter Medical Center. Above all else, Gary enjoyed spending time with his family and loved visits from his grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son Garet Keith Pilling and his former wife Melissa B. Pilling. Surviving are his son Scott T. Pilling and wife Laurie of Brielle, his daughter Laurie H. Pilling of Wall, his sister Joan Roberts of Pompano Beach, Fla., and his seven grandchildren Alexander, Zachary, Harley, Hobart, Meghan, Allison and Emily.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall, NJ 07719 followed by a Requiem Mass on Friday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. at St. Uriel the Archangel Church, 219 Philadelphia Blvd., Sea Girt, NJ 08750. Please go directly to the church on Friday morning. Cremation will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Dr. G. Keith Pilling Scholarship Fund, c/o Rachel Donnelly, Emory School of Medicine, 1440 Clifton Road NE, Suite 170, Atlanta, GA 30322.

Ann Marie Eknoian
Ann Marie [nee Amabile] Eknoian, 66, of the Allenwood section of Wall, passed away at her home on Jan. 18 with her family by her side. Ann Marie was born and raised in Jersey City and graduated with a teaching degree from Jersey City State College. She taught in Montessori School, St. Denis, and Spring Lake Heights Elementary. Ann Marie coached cheerleading and softball. Her favorite pastime, along with husband Richard, was attending as many of their grandchildren’s sports and school activities as they could.

Ann Marie was predeceased by her parents, John and Marie Amabile, her husband’s parents, John and Mary Eknoian, and a grandson, Jack Eknoian.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Richard Eknoian, of Allenwood, two sons and their spouses, Richard Jr. and Lisa Eknoian, of Wall, John and Carolyn Eknoian, of Holmdel, and a daughter and her spouse, Maria and Peter Miceli, of Allenwood. Ann Marie is also survived by ten grandchildren: Ashley, Petie, Christopher, Richie, Patrick, Mary Rose, Kaitlyn, John, Bobby and Sarah; her brother John Amabile and his wife Sue, of Spring Lake Heights; two brother-in-laws, Robert Eknoian and his wife Diane, of Chatham, and Raymond Eknoian and his wife Barbara, of La Mirada, Calif.; a sister-in-law Linda Khoury and her husband John, of Paramus; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 21 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Catharine Church, 215 Essex St., Spring Lake. Entombment will follow at St. Catharine’s Mausoleum, Sea Girt.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cancer Institute of New Jersey, 195 Little Albany St., New Brunswick, 08901.

Diana Olivia Lopus Ott
Diana Olivia Lopus [formerly Boos] Ott, originally of Brielle, devoted loving mother and grandmother, entered into the final state of peace on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at Mountain View Hospital in Las Vegas, Nev.

Diana was born on April 11, 1952 in Newark but was really a native of Brielle until becoming a resident of Las Vegas in 2003. She attended St. Denis Elementary School and was a graduate of Manasquan High School in 1970 before continuing her studies as a paralegal at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft. Despite her education, she remained with her first love of taking care of her customers by working as a pharmacy manager at the main Pharmacy [now Rite Aid] in Manasquan for 29 years and retiring in 1997. Diana was an outstanding pianist with love of playing classical and modern pieces. As a youth, her talents were recognized by her church and was the organist during Sunday mass. Diana’s talents were not only musical, but as a youth, she was an outstanding athlete as well as in a variety or organized sports.

Diana is preceded in death by her husband George H. Ott and her mother Helen Indyk Krupa.

She is survived by her devoted and loving son, Artie P. Boos of Las Vegas, her father Ronald S. Krupa Sr. of Las Vegas, her brothers Thomas Lopus of Belmar, Joseph Lopus of Lake Como, Ronald S. Krupa Jr. and his wife Dening Krupa, both las Vegas, nephew Stephen Krupa of Las Vegas, niece Lea Krupa of Las Vegas, and granddaughter Amanda Boos of Broomall, Pa.

Desert Memorial, Las Vegas, Nev. was in charge of arrangements.

A double interment ceremony for both Diana and her late husband George, with full military honors, took place at the Southern Nevada Veterans Military Memorial cemetery in Boulder City, Nev.

Michael Jay Wood
Michael Jay Wood, 48, formerly of Wall, died suddenly on January 16 at his home in Asbury Park.

Born in Point Pleasant, Michael lived most of his life in Wall Township, and Asbury Park. Michael attended Wall High School and Anderson College in South Carolina. He owned a delicatessen in Jersey City, and more recently a deli/restaurant in Asbury Park. He will be remembered by his family for his loving support during times of need. He will be missed.

Michael is survived by his mother Gail Foster Rizzo and her husband Don, of Wall; his father Mel Wood and his wife Louise, of Wall; sisters Elizabeth Ann Wood, of South Carolina and Stephanie Lynn Wood, of Vancouver, Canada. Michael also leaves his paternal grandmother Anna Wood, of Manasquan; and many loving relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Manasquan, on Friday, Jan. 21 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael’s name are requested to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

Leatrice R. Trass
Leatrice R. Trass [nee Cortellessa], 86, of Mantoloking and formerly of Oradell, with family in Wall, died peacefully on Jan. 16.

Born and raised in Bayonne, Leatrice attended Bayonne High School and Berkley Business College. She worked as the secretary to the director of research of Nabisco, in Fair Lawn. She retired to Deauville Beach, in Brick, 30 years ago. Leatrice was predeceased by her husband, Norman, 25 years ago, and her sister, Rose Cortellessa-Holzman.

She is survived by her daughter Margaret “Gretchen” Stevens, of Wall; her son Norman L. Trass, Jr. and his wife Margaret, of Oradell; grandchildren Heather, Brett, Daniel, Timothy, and Jennifer; and great-grandchildren Brianna and Austin. Leatrice also leaves her sister Florence Brennan.

The O’Brien Funeral Home, Brick, was in charge of arrangements.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Catharine Church, Spring Lake, with burial to follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle. Donations requested to Dr. Valentin Fuster, c/o Mt. Sinai Med. Ctr., 1 Gustav Levy Place, Box 130, NY, NY 10029.

Donald J. Manger
Donald J. Manger, 78 of Spring Lake Heights passed away Wednesday, Jan. 12 at University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia.

Born Dec. 13, 1932, the son of Herbert B. Manger and Marie Keller Manger, Donald went to St. Peter’s Grammar School, Newark where he met his best friend and wife of over 50 years, Ruthmarie McDonald Manger. Donald was a graduate of Seton Hall Preparatory School, South Orange. Donald was drafted during the Korean War into the U.S. Army, where he was selected for and was a graduate of the Army Leadership School at Fort Dix. Donald was a Corporal in the Presidential Honor Guard and a proud member of the U.S. Army Drill Team in Washington, D.C. Donald worked for MGM Records in Bloomfield, and as a letter carrier for the United States Post Office for 38 years in Hazlet Donald was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Parish of Avon by the Sea.

Donald was predeceased by his wife Ruthmarie Manger in 2008. Donald never really got over the loss of Ruthmarie, and now they are joined together again for eternity.

He is also predeceased by a sister Marie and two brothers; Herbert G. and Harrold J.

He is survived by his five loving children, Joan E. Lee and her husband Melvin A. of Freehold Township, Dr. Donald C. Manger and his wife Halina of Pennington, Joseph W. Manger and his partner Nicholas G. Truhan of Hamilton, Kathleen M. Kenny and her husband Peter J. of Manasquan, and Mary F. Mueller and her husband Darren J. of Holmdel, three beloved grandchildren, Ian, Brendan and Brandon. He is also survived by a brother, Raymond Manger and his wife Eleanor of Jackson, special cousins James Keigher and Patty Kleppinger, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The Orender Family Home for Funerals, Manasquan, was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations may be made to St. Elizabeth’s Church Altar Rosary Society, 424 Lincoln Avenue, Avon by the Sea, NJ 07717 or AstraZeneca Hope Lodge, 110 West Laurel Avenue, Cheltenham, PA 19012 [where lodging is provided at no cost to patients undergoing cancer treatment and their families].

Jean O. Hurley
Jean O. Hurley [nee Orndoff], 79, of Ocean Grove, formerly of Belmar, died Friday, Jan. 14 at her home.

Born in Mt. Savage, Md., she lived in Belmar and Newark before moving to Wall Township with her husband Donald, where they lived for 60 years. The couple moved to Ocean Grove five years ago.

As a young woman, Mrs. Hurley was a Switchboard Operator for Bell Telephone in Spring Lake. She worked with Donald for 20 years in the ownership and operation of Chester Heulitt Inc., a sheet metal and roofing company in Spring Lake Heights, before retiring in 2001.

Jean was a member of the Jersey Shore Promenaders, a square dancing club. She loved to spend time with her husband at their cabin in Sherburne, New York. She enjoyed ceramics, crafts and was a true dog lover. She was known as the “cookie lady, ” because she always carried treats in her pockets for the dogs.

Mrs. Hurley is survived by her husband of 60 years, Donald. Also surviving are many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 29, at a time to be announced, at the Francis Asbury Manor, 70 Stockton Ave., Ocean Grove.

The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond C. Auen, Sr.
Raymond C. Auen, Sr., 90, of Neptune City, with family in Wall, passed away at his residence on Monday, Jan. 17.

Mr. Auen was born in Swissville, Pa., and moved to the Shore area at the age of 10. He attended Asbury Park High School, before joining the Army National Guard. He then served as an Army Sergeant during WWII, as an MP patrolling New Orleans and the California coast, as well as in North Africa and Italy, where he held German prisoners who had been fighting under Rommel. After the War, he continued to serve in the Army National Guard, Red Bank, for many years, until retiring as a captain. His National Guard service was his true passion, and he most enjoyed his trips to Camp Drum, N.Y. Mr. Auen also spent his career with the N.J. Department of Corrections, retiring as a captain after more than 30 years of service, at state prisons at Bordentown, Rahway, Trenton, and finally, at Avenel.

Mr. Auen was predeceased by his wife, Emily, in 2007, and his brother Vernon, USMC, who was killed in action during WWII.

He is survived by his sons and their wives, Raymond Jr. and Kathy, of Wall, and Craig and Melissa, of Pottstown, Pa., and his daughters, Linda Carroll and her husband Gary, of Shark River Hills, and Michele, of Neptune City. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, was in charge of arrangements. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. Entombment will follow at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls.

In lieu of flowers, donations to American Diabetes Association, 1160 US 22, No. 103, Bridgewater, 08807, would be appreciated.

William E. Hosfield
William E. Hosfield, 66, of Manasquan, passed away peacefully at home after battling poor health for several years.

Born in St. Paul, Minn., he moved to New Jersey in 1945 and settled down in Manasquan in 1946, later graduating from Manasquan High School in 1962. He went on to work for the borough of Manasquan for over 30 years and was a dedicated volunteer with the Manasquan Fire Department No. 1 since 1968 and Manasquan First Aid for many years. He was a member of the Exempt Firemen’s Association and a communicant of St. Denis Roman Catholic Church. William loved bowling, traveling and hanging out with his buddies at the fire department.

He is predeceased by his parents, William and Louise Hosfield, and is survived by his brother, George L. Hosfield and his wife Marie, of Blowing Rock, N.C.; his brother, Michael Hosfield and his wife Darryl, of Red Oak, Texas; his brother, Peter Hosfield, of Manasquan; his sister, Gretchen Field, of Milton, Vt.; his brother, John David Hosfield and his wife, Dale, of Plainsboro, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan.

A funeral Mass will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Denis Roman Catholic Church, 90 Union Ave., Manasquan. Interment will follow at St. Anne’s Cemetery, in Wall Township.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Manasquan Fire Dept. No. 1, 33 Abe Voorhees Dr., Manasquan, or to Manasquan First Aid, 65 Broad St., Manasquan.
