Josephine D. Cole
Manasquan resident Josephine D. Cole died Sunday, Feb. 8.

She was 88 years old.

Born and raised in Nutley, she moved to Manasquan in 1946 and later to Brielle and Forked River. She was a devout communicant of St. Denis Church in Manasquan and Pius X in Forked River. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and adoring grandmother.

She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Elizabeth Smyth, eight siblings, her son Charles A. in 1999, and her loving husband of 58 years, Charles L. in 1999.

She is survived by her daughter Gail and her husband Gregory Curlis of Farmingdale, and four grandchildren, Scott and Gregory Curlis and Michele and Brian Cole.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, Feb. 11 at the NJ Veterans’ Cemetery, Arneytown. All arrangements are under the attentive direction and care of O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Josephine’s name are requested to the Ronald McDonald House, 550 Mickle Blvd., Camden 08103.

Frank M. Takas
Point Pleasant resident Frank M. Takas, formerly of Wall, died suddenly on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

He was 49 years old.

Born in Philadelphia, he grew up in Neptune and also had lived in Brick and Wall before moving to Point Pleasant 13 years ago.

A mechanic, Frank was the owner and operator of Frank’s Complete Auto Repair, West Belmar.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and was an avid sports enthusiast, golfer and motorcycle aficionado.

He was predeceased by his mother, Ann L. Schweitzer Takas and by his step-mother, Shiela Takas.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife Theresa Fuentes Takas; five children, Ashley DeKany, Courtney Takas, Madyson Takas, Michael Takas and Nicole Takas-Carpenter; his brother, Joseph Takas and his wife Amiie; his father, Frank E. Takas; two sisters, Debra Takas Clifford and her husband Walter “John” and Lorraine “Lori” Takas Bohrer and her husband, John; a special nephew, Jayce Griggs; and several additional nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant.

As an expression of sympathy, contributions to the Takas children are suggested and would be appreciated.

Richard John Klinger
Brick resident Richard John Klinger, formerly of Manasquan, died Friday, Feb. 6 after a courageous battle with a GBM brain tumor.

He was 50 years old.

Richard graduated Manasquan High School in 1976 where he was a lifelong resident. He was actively involved in the Monmouth and Ocean Brain Tumor Support Group where he made a profound impact with his encouraging words. He frequented the Manasquan dog beach with his faithful black lab Jaeger “The Meister.” He was also a member of Roofers Local 30 out of Philadelphia, Pa. and a member of the Shore Soccer Officials Association. Richard’s vibrant passion for life was felt by everyone he had ever come across.

Richard leaves behind his loving soul mate and “wife” Catherine Kelly, who has never left his side throughout his two year battle. He was a loved son of Richard Klinger and wife Pamela of Delray Beach, Fla. and Eileen Klinger of Wall; a loved father to Jason and Melissa of Wall and stepson Michael Kelly of Brick; and loved brother to Deborah and her husband Kevin Smith, niece Stefanie and nephew Michael of Lake Worth, Fla. He couldn’t have fulfilled a better life without devoted friends Tommy Pelose of Woodbridge and Tommy Morton of Manasquan.

Visitation was held on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Richard’s memory to the David Zocchi Brain Tumor Center of Monmouth Medical Center, 300 Second Ave., Long Branch 07740.

Lucille Kennedy Lyons
Spring Lake resident Lucille Kennedy Lyons died peacefully Friday, Jan. 2 at Meridian Nursing and Rehabilitation, Shrewsbury.

She was 89 years old.

Born in West Orange, she moved to Spring Lake when she married.

Known for her smile and wonderful nature, Lucille just loved helping anyone in need, especially the poor. She received the honor of New Jersey Woman of the Year from the American Red Cross in 1962.

Lucille worked at Monmouth College in the 60s as secretary to the Dean of Faculty. She retired from the Archdiocese of Newark in 1988 after serving many years as personal secretary to Bishop Joseph Francis.

After retiring, Lucille traveled extensively with her son Kevin, enjoying the horse racing circuit. She then learned to love Brooklyn, living there with her daughter Chris and son-in-law Neil for some years.

She was predeceased by her husband John Joseph Lyons in 1968.

She is survived by her sons Thomas of New York City, N.Y., and Kevin of Red Bank, and daughter Christine and son-in-law Neil Kennedy of Brooklyn, N.Y.

At the request of the family, all services were private and under the direction of the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank 07701.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter, 400 Morris Avenue, Suite 251, Denville 07834.

John ‘Pop’ O’Keefe
Belmar resident John “Pop” O’Keefe died Feb. 8 after a long battle with cancer.

He was born in County Clare, Ireland and came to the U.S. in 1948. He lived in Old Bridge for almost 50 years before moving to Belmar in 2006 to live with his daughter, Maureen McCaffery Kahrmann and son-in-law Rick Kahrmann. He was an active parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Old Bridge for many years along with his wife of 57 years, Peg.

He was predeceased by Peg in 2002, and by his son Derrick in 1971.

Besides his daughter, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law John P. and Linda O’Keefe, Boca Raton, Fla., and his loving grandchildren John O’Keefe of Boca Raton, Erin McCaffery and her husband Major Matt Takara of Raleigh-Durham, N.C., Karen Krackov and her fianceé John Whit of Falls Church, Va. and David and Ivana Kahrmann of Belgrade, Serbia.

His smiling face and twinkling blue eyes will be sadly missed by his family.

Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reilly Funeral Home, 801 D St. Belmar. A Funeral Mass will be at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Route 18 Old Bridge on Friday, Feb. 13, at 9:30 a.m. Internment will follow at Holy Cross cemetery in East Brunswick. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice by the Sea, 1541 W. Palmetto Parkway, Boca Raton, FL 33486, who lovingly cared for his with dignity and respect, would be appreciated.

George D. Carrajat
Wall resident George D. Carrajat, known to everyone as “Bud, ” died Wednesday, Feb. 4 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 62 years old.

Born in Teaneck, he resided in Queens before moving to Wall in 1988. Mr. Carrajat served his country in the U.S. Army as an Explosive Ordinance Reconnaissance Agent. He was active in his community and served in the past as Exalted Ruler of the Queens Elks Lodge.

Mr. Carrajat is survived by his loving wife Barbara of 32 years, as well as brother Patrick Carrajat and his wife Kate of Long Island City.

Visitation was held Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home in Wall. A funeral service was immediately followed. Cremation services will be private.

Henry Owen Wright
Manasquan resident Henry Owen Wright died Friday, Feb. 6.

He was 66 years old.

Mr. Wright attended the Peddie School, Hightstown and was a 1961 graduate of Manasquan High School. He then attended the University of Miami and Seton Hall University.

He began his storied career with Alberta Culver and then started a painting contracting business and became founder of Wright Brothers Construction in Sea Girt with his late brother, John G. Wright. He continued to build and create for more than 40 years. His imagination, love of life and people led him into the restaurant business. First, he became a partner in the Parker House in Sea Girt in 1977. Soon after the partnership, consisting of longtime childhood friends Jay Pandolfe and Frankie Matthews, would acquire and open the Columns in Avon by the Sea. He devoted his life to these ongoing operations along with his son Michael, and could most likely be seen painting the porch of the restaurant in the spring. Other endeavors included the Tides Café in Neptune with partners and friends Dickie Hyde, Reggie Hyde and the late Gene Day. Lake Como Trolley Company, Rental Properties with his beloved wife Tina and businesses in Vermont were also among his other interests. Locally, Henry was a proud member of the Spring Lake Golf Club.

The sea was also a passion for Henry. He was an avid sports fisherman owning numerous boats including the Anticipation and the Stoli, which would also run as Charter Businesses. The Anticipation holds the state record for a white marlin to this day.

He briefly owned and raced a thoroughbred horse named Silver Cross. He had a strong love for animals which could be seen through his dogs and farm animals at his former farm and homestead in Vermont.

We all lost one of the world’s bright lights. He will be greatly missed. He was the most loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

He was predeceased by his parents John and Isabel Wright, brother John G. Wright, and father-in-law Louie Fontana.

He is survived by his loving wife Tina Wright; sons Michael and his wife Larisa of Spring Lake, Mickey, Schuyler and Jake, all at home; sister and brother-in-law Virginia and Ernie Westphal of Sea Girt; grandchildren Finn and Ava; mother and father-in-law Teresa and Michael Lavelle of Oakland; brother-in-law and his wife Guy and Dana Fontana of Hasbrouck Heights; niece and her husband Lauren and Jeff Lake and their son John; nephew Gil Wright; niece Kendra Wright and cousins Carol Cane and her husband Phil and their sons Chris and Owen.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at St. Marks RC Church, Sea Girt. Entombment will be at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

Lawrence J. Salvato
Brick resident Lawrence J. Salvato, who had family in Spring Lake Heights and Manasquan, died Wednesday, Feb. 4.

He was 78 years old.

He was a communicant at St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church of Brick and before that a parishioner at St. Catharine’s Church of Spring Lake.

He was also a Past Grand Knight of Council No. 5611 of the Knights of Columbus of Spring Lake and was active recently as public relations director and editor of their monthly newsletter. He was also a Fourth Degree Knight in Rt. Rev. Msgr Baldwin Assembly in Brick.

A graduate of Brooklyn College, he retired from Naval Weapons Station Earle, Colts Neck in 1993. Originally from Brooklyn, in 1960 he moved his growing family to Scotch Plains where they lived for 25 years before moving to the shore in 1985.

A veteran, he served during the Korean War as a flight deck electrician with Air Anti-submarine Squadron VS 26, “Tigers” at Chambers Field, Naval Air Station Norfolk and also TAD sea duty in the Mediterranean aboard the carrier USS Salerno Bay.

He is survived by his wife Marie [nee Farrell]; his sons, Lawrence, an appeals attorney in Manhattan, and Matthew of Westfield, an entrepreneur; and his daughters, Loren Harrison of Spring Lake Heights, an RN at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Maureen Perednia of Manasquan, a computer systems consultant. He is also survived by five grandchildren.

Viewing hours were held Sunday, Feb. 8 at the Colonial Funeral Home in Brick. A funeral mass was offered at St. Dominic’s R.C. Church, Brick. Burial followed at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Wall.
