Doris Smith
Doris "Nanny" Smith [Hayes], of Spring Lake, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 14. She was 92.
Born in Washington D.C., Doris moved to Arlington, Va. as a teen. She graduated in 1941 from The College of William and Mary where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. After graduation, she worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Pentagon during World War II.
As one of the first female air traffic controllers in the country, Doris had the distinction of being the first at Washington National Airport. There, she met her husband of 30 years Charles “Snuffy” Smith Jr. a Captain with Eastern Airlines. She also had a private pilot’s license and was featured in the documentary “Pioneer Women of Aviation.”
She settled with her family in Spring Lake in 1964, where she was an avid reader and Yankee fan. She was predeceased by her husband Charles in 1977.
She is survived by four children, Charles J Smith III and wife Patricia of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Jeffery B Smith, of Spring Lake, Susan Hull [Smith] and her husband Harwood, of Hilton Head, S.C. and Sarah "Sally" Smith and her companion, Richard Forlenza, of Spring Lake; four grandchildren, Kimberly Loevy [Smith] and her husband Daniel, of Point Pleasant, Katherine Smith and fiancé Michael Stewart, of Spring Lake Heights, and Andrew and Lauren Smith, of Ponte Vedra Beach Fla.; and one great granddaughter, Emily Loevy, of Point Pleasant.
Words cannot express how amazing and wonderful Nanny was. Those whose lives she touched are better for having known her.
Arrangements were under the directions of the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. Funeral Mass and burial was private.

Richard C. Mentrasti
Richard C. Mentrasti, of Avon-by-the-Sea, passed away on Friday, June 15, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. He was 65.
Born in Jersey City before moving to Avon in 1982, Richard was an athlete who played in Little League, founded by his father, and football from grammar school until he graduated William L. Dickinson High School. Upon graduation, Richard apprenticed as an electrician, a vocation he held for over 30 years in Local IBEW 164. His work as an electrician and foreman included various high-rise projects including the Goldman Sachs Building in Jersey City. He was also very active in the Boys Scouts, making it to rank of Eagle Scout. Even after, he remained active in the leadership of Boy Scouts and supported them long after he retired.
Richard served in the Army National Guard for over 35 years, spending much of his time at the National Guard training facility in Sea Girt, before retiring as a Master Sergeant.
He was an avid fisherman and longtime member of the Belmar Fishing Club where he served for a number of years on the Board of Governors. Richard was a parishioner of Saint Elizabeth’s Church in Avon. He was a past president and commissioner of the Avon Recreation Commission. He was a member of the Manasquan Elk’s Club and the Central Jersey Rifle and Pistol Club and avid marksman.
Richard is survived by his loving wife Margaret “Peggy” Mentrasti [nee Niland], his niece, Megan Timmins of Avon and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Reilly Funeral Home in Belmar. A Mass of Christian Burial
was celebrated at Saint Elizabeth’s RC Church in Avon. Committal was private at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial cemetery in Wrightstown. In lieu of flowers, donations to either Avon First Aid, PO Box 4, Avon or Boy Scout Troop 89, 31 Garfield Ave., Avon would be appreciated.
Patricia Canfield
Patricia Rutledge Canfield, formerly of Belmar, passed away on Saturday, June 16, at her home. She was 78.
She was a mother of five, grandmother of six and great grandmother of one. Mrs. Canfield volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years in Monmouth County. She also enjoyed her visits to Resorts Casino in Atlantic City.
Born in Newark, she lived in East Orange, Glen Ridge and was a resident of Belmar for 35 years before moving to Manchester 7 years ago.
She was predeceased by her first husband Paul Rutledge Sr. in 1977; second husband David Canfield in 1985; son Paul Rutledge Jr. in 1975; son in law Joseph Vogt, Sr. in 1999; brother Robert J. Reilly; and four sisters, Alice Mooney, Rosemary Prevlege, Honey Sandland and Helen Gilliam.
Surviving are her sons Peter Robert Rutledge and his wife Debra, of Spring Lake Heights, Terrence R. Rutledge and his fiancée Jennifer, of Brick, William M. Rutledge, of Manchester; daughter Marybeth Stockert and her husband Martin, of Jackson and a daughter in law, Denise Geronomos, of Stroudsburg, Pa.; six grandchildren, Joseph, Frank, Shelby, Linni, Paul III and Caleigh, as well as a great grandson, Paul IV. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were under the direction of O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. Cremation will be private. Donations may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association, 400 Morris Ave., Suite 251, Denville.
Marjorie Jean Robinson
Marjorie Jean Robinson, of Wall Township, died Saturday, June 16, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. She was 85.
Born in Wall, she has lived in Wall all of her life.
Mrs. Robinson was a Director for the Selective Service in Asbury Park for 25 years before retiring. She was the organist for over 60 years and was a very active, lifelong member of the West Belmar United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Robinson is pre-deceased by her brother, Robert Mahlon Robinson in 1997, and is survived by her two brothers, Reverend James W. Robinson, of Sea Girt, and Charles Robinson, of Neptune; two sisters, Catherine Saxion, of Sea Girt, and Charlotte I. Robinson, of Wall. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home. Graveside Services were private, at the request of the family, at Atlantic View cemetery in Manasquan. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 23, at 11 a.m. at the West Belmar United Methodist Church.

Robert G. Turton
Robert G. "Bob" Turton, formerly of Spring Lake Heights, went home to be with his lord on Wednesday June 13. He was 78.
Formerly a resident of Spring Lake Heights for 33 years, he retired to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 1996.
Born in Newark on February 2, 1934, he lived in Union and graduated from the Pingry School in Elizabeth and Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. He married
his beloved wife Miriam "Mimi" Riessen, also of Union in 1955 after a whirlwind romance which began when they first kissed at the end of the rocks at the Manasquan Inlet during a full moon in June, 1952. They were inseperable best friends from that point forward.
Bob served in the US Air Force as a pilot in the Strategic Air Command druing the Cold War. He moved his family to Spring Lake Heights where he served many years on the Board of Adjustment and was vice-chairman. He served on the Central Jersey Christian School Board, Asbury Park, where he was treasurer. Self-employed as a private investigator he was president and chairman of the Private Detectives Association of New Jersey [subsequently the New Jersey Licensed Private Investigators Association]. Upon retirement he served as Claims Consultant, Office of the Trustee, NJAFIUA [JUA] until his move to Pin Knoll Shores, N.C.
Bob was a founding director of the Shoralan Club in Belmar and a founding member of Fellowship Chapel in Point Pleasant. He served as a volunteer Guardian Ad Litem, North Carolina District 3B where he was named Outstanding Advocate of the Year in 2001.
He leaves his best friend and dear wife Mimi of 57 years, Pine Knoll Shores; son Tom and wife Lore, Fayetteville, Ga.; daughter Kathy Furtner, Pine Knoll Shores; and daughter Nancy Parler, Durham, N.C. He also leaves nine grandchildren, Jeff, Josh and Jeremy Turton; Joey Furtner and wife Kristen; Missy Klor and husband Wes; and Kevin Furtner and wife Madeline; and Michael, Matthew and Katie Parler; and five great grandchildren; Karlee, Ben and Samuel Furtner; and John Lincoln and Sarah Elisabeth Klor; completing four generations of his family in the town of Pine Knoll Shores.
In addition he is survived by his sister Pat Biondi, of Mountainside, and three nieces and one nephew. He was predeceased by son-in-law Len Furtner.

Harriet Wrensch
Sea Girt and Delray Beach, Fla. resident Harriet Pullen Wrensch died Wednesday, May 23, at Ocean Medical Center, in Brick.
She was 91 years old.
She was an active member in the Ladies Club and the Republican Party. She also worked for many years in the credit department of Bambergers.
Harriet was predeceased by her husbands, Charles F. Pullen and Alexander Wrensch, along with her son, Charles R. Pullen.
She is survived by her daughter in law, Micki Pullen; three grandchildren and their spouses, Robert and Lisa Pullen, Bill and Erinn Pullen, Bonnie and Mike Seelmeyer; six great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Jessica, Jeff, Gary, Brenden and Alexandria; and her great great granddaughter Gabriella.
Services were private and for family only.
K. Sheila Will
Toms River resident K. Sheila Will [nee O’Hagan], formerly of Wall, passed peacefully, surrounded by her family, reuniting with her beloved husband, Daniel, on Friday, June 29.
She was 71 years old.
She was born in West Long Branch and graduated from Long Branch High School.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Seton Hill University, heard the call to vocation and served as a Sister of the Humility of Mary, until her calling was expanded to include family life.
She met her husband Daniel while earning master’s degree credits at Xavier University in Cincinatti, Ohio.
She became a wife and mother and continued serving the Catholic church as director of religious education at St. Mary’s in Deal, Epiphany Parish, in Brick, and most recently, Mt. Carmel, in Asbury Park. She was known for her wisdom, grace, integrity and endlessly generous spirit.
The sources of joy in her life were her grandchildren, family and friends, and she was a source of joy to everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her two children, Patricia and Daniel, and three grandchildren, Daniel, Salvatore and Alexandra.
A funeral service will be held tomorrow, on Friday, July 6, at 9:15 a.m. from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial
at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel RC Church, Asbury Park.
Visiting is today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Sean Patrick Roenbeck
Belmar resident Sean Patrick Roenbeck died on Monday, June 25.
He was 23 years old.
Born in Point Pleasant, he lived in Ocean Township before moving to Belmar.
Sean was a 2001 graduate of Ocean Township High School, and co-captain of the 2000 State Champion football team Central Jersey Division Group III.
He was a 2006 graduate of the University of Delaware.
Sean worked as a drug and alcohol counselor at J.S.A.S. Health Care, in Asbury Park. He was a member and communicant at St. Rose Church, Belmar.
Sean was also the lead singer of the band “Good Grief, ” having played at the Stone Pony.
Surviving are his parents, Ernest C. Roenbeck and Beth Meehan Roenbeck; two brothers, Christopher M. Roenbeck, of Unionville, Conn., and Dr. Kevin M. Roenbeck, of Highland Park. He is also survived by many loving relatives and friends.
Interment was held at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall Township.
