Elizabeth S. Madden
Wall resident Elizabeth S. Madden dued on July 8 at the Meridian Health Care Center of Wall.
She was 81 years old.
Born in Newark, she was raised in East Orange, graduating from East Orange High School in 1945. Following her graduation, she worked as a secretary for the Atlas Supply Company of Newark. Mrs. Madden moved to the Shark River Hills Section of Neptune in 1953, and was active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Shark River Hills Volunteer Fire Department.
A resident of Wall for the past 45 years, Mrs. Madden served as a Committee Women on the Wall Township Council during the 1970’s and was a member of the Wall Republican Club; she remained an avid follower of political events. Mrs. Madden worked with the Marriott Food Service Corporation at the Wall Service Center. She was a popular person who was well known for her kind words to the harried traveler.
She was predeceased by her parents, Arthur A. Schneider and Ida E. Taylor Schneider.
Mrs. Madden is survived by her devoted daughters, Jane Hess and her husband, Dr. Herbert Hess, of Moscow, Idaho, and Barbara Barry and her husband, Bernard, of Bayville; her loving grandchildren, Kim Biano and her husband, Michae, l of Bayville, Karyn O’Connor and her husband, Dene, of Bayville, and Amanda Hess, of Boise, Idaho; and her very special great-grandchildren, Franklyn, and Emma Elizabeth.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-8:30 p.m. at the Johnson - McGinley Funeral Home, 2652 Highway 138, Wall Township [adjacent to the Rt. 18 north entrance.]
At 8:30 p.m., funeral services will be offered at the funeral home with Reverend Frank Merckx officiating. On Friday graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. at the Atlantic View cemetery of Manasquan. Those attending should meet at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m.
Steven Zakutney
Wall resident Steven Zakutney died Tuesday, July 1 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
He was 43 years old.
Steven was born and raised in Phillipsburg, Pa. He moved to New Jersey in 1991. Steven was a graduate of Penn State University, State College, Pa. He worked at Penn State University in the food service department for three years. Steven was the food purchaser for Rutgers University for 17 years. He was a coach for Neptune Little League Softball and Baseball, a coach for the Wall Mako Travel Baseball Team, an avid fisherman and a member of the Shark River Surf Anglers.
Steven is survived by his wife, Christine Shebell Zakutney, of Wall; two daughters, Dana and Emma; and a stepson, Matthew Ford, all of Wall. He is also survived by his parents, John and Carol [nee Visnofsky] Zakutney, of Phillipsburg; a sister, Stephanie Showers, of Phillipsburg; and two nieces, Abby and Angela; and a nephew, Ryan.
Interment was held at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to a scholarship fund for Steven’s children at Sovereign Bank, 2500 Belmar Boulevard, Wall, 07719.

Mary Raffetto
Spring Lake resident Mary “Mamie” Raffetto died on Sunday, July 8 at MediCenter in Neptune City.
She was 98 years old.
Born in New York City, she lived in Jersey City before moving to Spring Lake. She was a communicant at St. Catharine’s Church in Spring Lake.
Mrs. Raffetto was predeceased by her husband, Charles.
She is survived by her nephews, Dr. Joseph Raffetto and his wife, Deborah, of Salisbury, Md., Louis Raffetto Jr. and his wife, Fran, of Laurel, Md.; three grand nephews, Louis and his wife, Kristen, Joseph, and Michael Raffetto; and three grand nieces, Kristen Snipes and her husband, Justin, and Regina and Jennifer Raffetto.
There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held today, July 11 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.
John M. Hanley
Louisville, Ky. resident John M. Hanley died on Friday, July 4 at Brick Memorial Hospital, Brick. He leaves behind many loved ones, including family in Spring Lake Heights and Sea Girt.
He was 56 years old.
Born in Orange, he lived in Illinois and Minnesota, before establishing his home in Louisville, Ky., where he lived with his family for the past 22 years. He was an Eagle Scout, graduate of the College of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn., before starting his career as a district sales manager with Medtronic. He served with the Ministry of the Sick at St. Patrick’s, his parish in Louisville, Ky. He enjoyed horses and cooking and most of all his home away from home, the Jersey Shore.
The daily motivation behind John’s life was faith, family and friends.
His faith was the beacon that guided him through each and every day of his life. It was the driving force behind his spirit, love and generosity.
The center of John’s life was his family, his loving wife, Donna and his children and grandchildren. He was a great example of what it means to be a son, father, grandfather and husband.
Second only to his family were his friends. There is nothing John wouldn’t do for a friend, of which he had many.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Donna; his daughter, Kelly and son-in-law Jason West; grandsons, Jack, Ryan, and Brady; his son, Kevin; daughter-in-law, Delanie; and grandson, Dylan.
He had six siblings, William and Jane Hanley, of Maplewood, Michael and Pamela, of Orlando, Fla., Joe and Rhonda, of Rockford, Ill., Jimmy and Michelle, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mary and George Davellis, of Spring Lake Heights, Kevin and Carol, of Sea Girt, and Moira Hanley, of Spring Lake Heights.
Committal was private.

Jayne Harris
Lakewood resident Jayne S. Winchester Harris, formerly of Wall Township, died on Sunday, July 6 at VanDyke Hospice, Community Medical Cenyer in Toms River.
She was 84 years old.
Born in Albany, N.Y., she lived in Wall Township for many years before coming to Lakewood in 1998. Mrs. Harris was a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She served with the U.S. Army medical corps as a tech sergeant E-5 during World War II. She also volunteered for many years a nurses aide at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune and was longtime parish member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Wall. Jayne was an avid shopper and greatly enjoyed trips to Atlantic City.
She was predeceased by her brother, Earl Winchester.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, John L. Harris; her daughters, Linda McCully and her husband, John, Shelly Harris, and Tracy Hines and her partner, John Hersch; grandchildren, Sean Gardineer, Janel and Adam Drake, Jamie Butkus, Lindsay, Kenneth and Taylor Hines; and her great grandchildren, Dylan and Meredith.
Relatives and friends may gather in her memory on today from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, followed by a service at 6:30 pm.
A private committal service will follow at the Brig. Gen. Wm. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial cemetery in Arneytown.

Doris S. Allen
Allenwood resident Doris S. Allen died on Friday, July 4 at home.
Mrs. Allen was born in Downe Township, and moved to Point Pleasant after graduating from Bridgeton High School.
As a young woman, she worked at Camp Evans, Wall Township. Mrs. Allen proudly resided in her Allenwood home for over 60 years, which was built by her husband.
Mrs. Allen was predeceased by her loving husband, Ralph D. Allen.
She is survived by her daughter, Diane B. Allen and son-in-law, William E. Lang Jr., of Allenwood.
Interment was private under the direction of The Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, Wall Township.
Margaret DeCicco
Spring Lake Heights resident Margaret Rose Sellito DeCicco died on Friday, July 4 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family.
She was 95 years old.
Born and raised in East Orange, she was a longtime resident of Maplewood before coming to Spring Lake Heights 31 years ago. Mrs. DeCicco was a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. An outstanding cook and gardener, she loved trips to the Horse Park of NJ and trips to Atlantic City but most of all she loved time spent with her family. She was also a long time parishioner of St. Catharine’s-St. Margaret’s Parish in Spring Lake.
She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony F. DeCicco, and her sons, Michael and Anthony DeCicco.
She is survived by her son, Frank DeCicco; two granddaughters, Mary Ann Earl and her husband, Stephen, and Michelle Kean and her husband, Gerard; two grandsons, Michael DeCicco and his wife, Felicia, and Richard DeCicco and his wife, Bonnie; and seven great-grandchildren.
Entombment was held at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

Kathleen McGarry
Belmar resident Kathleen Feeney McGarry entered into eternal life on July 3.
She was 105 years old.
Mrs. McGarry was born on March 10, 1903, in Carrenduff, County Sligo, Ireland. She arrived at Ellis Island on July 4, 1923 -- 85 years ago. She loved America, but also treasured her Irish heritage. As a young woman, she worked for Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his family before he became president of the United States. Kathleen and her husband owned and operated McGarry’s Tavern in Newark for many years. She also worked and later retired from Irvington General Hospital. Kathleen was a daily communicant at the Church of St. Rose in Belmar, where she was a member of the Rosary-Altar Society and the 7:45 a.m. Rosary Group. She was also a member of the Women of Irish Heritage, Jersey Shore. Mrs. McGarry served as special deputy grand marshal of the Newark St. Patricks Day Parade in 1986, when her daughter, Patricia McGarry Drake, was deputy grand marshal. In 2006, she received a special proclamation from the Honorable William Pascrell as “Grand Mother of the Grand Marshal” when her grandson, Jack McGarry of West Orange, was grand marshal.
Kathleen was predeceased by her parents, John and Ann [nee Gallagher] Feeney; her beloved husband, Thomas; son, John [Jack]; daughter, Mary [Jean] Sutherland; granddaughter, Karen McGarry, and daughters-in-law, Patricia Washington McGarry and Mary Lewis McGarry; and her siblings, John, Michael, Owen, Thomas and James, Mae, Linda and Margaret.
Kathleen leaves her daughter, Elizabeth [Betty] McGarry, a former employee in the Essex County Clerks Office; her son, Thomas [Tom] McGarry, former superintendent of buildings for Essex County; daughter, Patricia McGarry Drake [Patty], former Essex County Clerk; her son-in-law, George Sutherland; grandchildren, John and Lou Ann, Kevin and Patty, Brian and Linda McGarry, Maureen, Tom and JoAnn, Dennis and Michele McGarry, Teddy and Janet, Kathleen, William and Robert Drake, James and Lori Sutherland and John and Susan Saenger; great-grandchildren, Kevin, Amy, Jessica, and Jenna McGarry, Melanie and Teddy Drake, Kelly and Jamie Sutherland, Nicole, Kaitlyn and Jennifer Saenger; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and dear friends.
Interment was held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.
