Robert R. McCabe
Point Pleasant resident Robert R. McCabe died Friday, Dec. 19 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.
He was 87 years old.
Born in Bayonne, he lived there and Roselle Park prior to moving to Point Pleasant in 1972.
He received a bachelor of science degree from Seton Hall University and was employed as an executive administrator for Lucent Technologies, New York City, for 50 years, retiring in 1983.
He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Bay Head.
Robert was a member of the Point Pleasant Elks Lodge No. 1698 and the Knights of Columbus, Brick.
He enjoyed golfing, bowling, singing and travelling. He was particularly proud of his lead role in a production of “Finean’s Rainbow.”
He was predeceased by his first wife of 45 years, Helen McCabe; four brothers; and two sisters.
Robert is survived by his wife of 10 years, Regina McCabe; two stepdaughters, Irene Marquis and her husband, Mike, of Brick and Nicole Fetsick, of Little Egg Harbor; a brother, George McCabe; and two step grandsons, Michael and Matthew. He is also survived by his goddaughter, Karen Delguercio, of Cherry Hill; and many loving nieces and nephews.
The Colonial Funeral Home, Brick, was in charge of arrangements. Interment
took place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1698, P. O. Box 1069, 820 Arnold Ave., Point Pleasant Beach, 08742, would be greatly appreciated.
Frank H. Herbert
Point Pleasant Beach resident Frank H. Herbert died Sunday, Dec. 21, in his home.
He was 84 years old.
Born in Point Pleasant Beach, to the late William and Marion Wolt Herbert, he was a lifelong resident.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Germany with the 160th Infantry.
Frank worked as a carpenter and retired from Richard Smith Builders 22 years ago.
He was predeceased by his brother, William Herbert; and by his sisters, Margaret Collins and Lillian Connors.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Vivian Risden Herbert; his daughter, Vivian M. Adams; his grandson, Thomas E. Adams and his wife Kris; two great-grandsons, Ray and Jack Adams; his sister, Margaret “Peggy” Parker and her husband, Jack; and many nieces and nephews.
The Pable-Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant was in charge of arrangements. Interment
took place at White Lawn Cemetery, Point Pleasant.
As an expression of sympathy, donations made to either the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society are suggested.
Mary Jane McGonnell Bavais
Point Pleasant resident Mary Jane McGonnell Bavais died Thursday, Dec. 18 in Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank.
She was 73 years old.
Born in Union, she had lived in Roselle Park before moving to Point Pleasant in 1960.
She was a secretary for Ocean County Administration for 26 years before retiring five years ago.
She was a member of the Navesink Knitters and a graduate of the Berkley Business School. She was a member of St. Martha’s Roman Catholic Church, Point Pleasant.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Bavais, in 1998.
She is survived by her son, Edward Thomas Bavais and his wife, Georgina, of Toms River; her daughter, Mary Jane Mehorter and her husband, Hugh, of Point Pleasant; and her sister, Margaret Ann Rose of Austin, Texas.
The Van Hise and Callagan Funeral Home, Point Pleasant Beach, was in charge of arrangements. Burial
took place at Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle.
John J. Chickering III
Bernardsville resident John J. Chickering III died Saturday, April 11, after a brief illness in his summer home in Bay Head. He was surrounded by his family.
He was 68 years old.
Mr. Chickering was born in Boston, and studied fine art at The Art Student’s League of New York, and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma in Italy.
He met and married
Christine Morgan in 1965. They lived in Italy for a year, where their first daughter was born, then moved back to New Vernon, where they had two more daughters. They moved to Bernardsville in 1975 where they have lived ever since.
Mr. Chickering painted spectacular landscapes and still life studies in oil in the tradition of American Impressionism and the Hudson River School. His paintings of Monhegan, Maine’s exquisite rocky coast, Somerset County’s breathtaking autumnal vistas, and the Jersey Shore’s beaches and bays were shown, appreciated and collected by many area residents for over 40 years. He was particularly adept at catching and conveying the light and movement of clouds and sunsets in all their splendor.
He was an avid golfer, a gifted photographer, a jazz and classical music afficionado and VNA rummage sale volunteer. He loved reading, exploring the meaning of life and taking his grandchildren for sails on his catboat, Margola.
Mr. Chickering is survived by his devoted wife, Chris, of Bernardsville; and his three daughters; Tori O’Connell, of Maplewood; Jenny and her husband, Chris Clark, of Greenwich, Conn.; and Abby Chickering, of Cambridge, Mass. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Charlotte, Samantha, Lulu and Archie.
The intimate family funeral was private and held at the beach, followed by an open, casual reception for friends and extended family at their home in Bay Head.

Edward W. Griggs
Point Pleasant resident Edward W. Griggs died Saturday, April 11 in Beth Israel Medical Center, Newark.
He was 66 years old.
Born in Point Pleasant, to the late Aaron and Virginia Williams Griggs, he was a lifelong borough resident.
He was a graduate of Point Pleasant Beach High School and Wentworth Institute of Technology.
He served his country in the United States Army and Reserves during Vietnam.
Mr. Griggs worked as a metallurgist and owned and operated Griggs Custom Castings, Point Pleasant Beach, for 30 years.
An avid boater, he loved the water. He was a member and past president of the Point Pleasant Rotary Club; the Antique Outboard Motor Club; the Monmouth County Rifle & Pistol Club; and the National Rifle Association.
For 50 years he was a member of the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church, where had served as a deacon.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife, and best friend, of 41 years, Barbara Drozd Griggs; his son, Edward A. Griggs and his wife, Hsiao-Yu, of Mount Olive; his daughter, Sarah Sarbello, of Point Pleasant Beach; and three grandchildren who he loved spending time with, Morgan, Emily and Wesley.
At 10 a.m., Friday, funeral services will be held at the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church, Bay and Forman avenues, Point Pleasant Beach. Entombment will follow at Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River.
As an expression of sympathy, contributions made in his memory to the Griggs Family Scholarship Fund at the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church, are suggested.

Audrey B. Goss
Point Pleasant resident Audrey B. Goss, formerly of South Belmar and Sea Girt, died Wednesday, April 8 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
She was 81 years old.
A lifelong resident of the Shore, she was born in South Belmar and was raised in Sea Girt, where she lived for many years, before moving to Point Pleasant 23 years ago.
Mrs. Goss was employed as a service representative with Verizon, formerly New Jersey Bell, in Toms River, retiring in 1993. She was a member of the Bell Telephone Pioneers. Audrey was an avid gardener and bird watcher. She most loved outings with her family and friends and enjoyed being by the ocean, spending time at the inlet, and with her beloved cat, Frankie.
She was predeceased by her parents, Leslie and Ursula Benton; her sister, Marilyn Benton; and her former husband, William Goss.
She is survived by her daughters, Heidi Fitzmaurice and her husband, Timothy, of Point Pleasant, and Robin Lennon, of Pennsylvania. She also leaves her grandchildren, Christopher, Tara, Kendra, Brandy, Brittany and Alexis Fitzmaurice and Noah Lennon; and her great-grandchildren, Tyler, Caelyn, Zoe, Ayden, Madison and Hayley.
Funeral arrangements were under the care of O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall. Burial
was at Wall Church Cemetery, Spring Lake Heights.
