Ethel Poole
Spring Lake Heights resident Ethel Poole died Monday, June 11 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
She was 104 years old.
Born in Jersey City she lived in Glen Ridge and commuted to St. Michaels Hospital in Newark where she worked in the main office. She worked there until just before her 70th birthday when she retired and moved to Avon-by-the-Sea.
After her retirement, she worked as a badge checker on the Avon beach. She lived in Avon for 27 years before moving to Spring Lake Heights nine years ago.
Ms. Poole was a member and communicant at St. Elizabeth’s Church where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews and other family members.
Interment took place at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. In lieu of flowers donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated. Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar was in charge of arrangements.
Michael John Ocone
Brick resident Michael John Ocone, formerly of Wall Township, died Tuesday, June 12 in his home.
He was 31 years old.
Michael, a senior manager, worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers, New York, for 11 years. He was an avid fisherman and boater. Michael enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He was a graduate of Oak Hill Academy, Christian Brothers Academy and Villanova University. Michael was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
He was born in Point Pleasant and raised in Wall before moving to Brick in 2000.
Michael is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of six years, Nicole Spagnolia Ocone; his two children, Emily Rose and Nicholas Michael, all of Brick; his parents, Louis M. and Mary Louise Krah Ocone of Brick; his mother-in-law, Patricia Spagnolia of Jackson; and father-in-law, Ronald Spagnolia of Toms River. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Anthony G. and Jill Ocone of Point Pleasant; a sister Maria L. Ocone of Point Pleasant; and two godchildren, Alex Jenkoski and Declan O'Grady.
Michael will be missed by his large extended family and many great friends.

took place at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall.

Robert J. Burrows
Spring Lake Heights resident Robert J. Burrows, also of Bayonne, died Friday, June 15 in his home, in Bayonne.
A resident of Bayonne for over 50 years, and Spring Lake Heights for the past six years, Bob Burrows continually served his community.
He worked as the Bayonne Democratic city commissioner for the First Ward and was instrumental in the election of Francis G. Fitzpatrick as Hudson County Democratic chairman in the 1970s. His public service included serving as commissioner of the Bayonne Board of Adjustments, in which he rose to vice chairman and subsequently resumed his position as a member of the Bayonne municipal government.
He was a trustee of the Bayonne Board of Education during the construction of Midtown Community School District, and also served as the citizen appointed member of the Hudson/Bergen Bayonne Light Rail Advisory Committee, where he led Bayonne to becoming the initial choice for construction of the light rail system.
He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 371, Holy Name Society, St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Parish Council, Bayonne Sicilian Club, Irelands 32 and the New Frontier Democrats, and a bocce player, all in Bayonne.
Bob Burrows’ dedication and love for his community enabled him to serve as Bayonne First Ward councilman from 1995 through 1998. He then turned his attention to further serving the people of Bayonne through his work as congressional aide to United States Senator Robert Menendez from 1999 through 2006 and United States Representative Albio Sires in 2006 and 2007.
In addition to his work on the federal level, Mr. Burrows continued to serve his local community as a member of the Bayonne Museum Commission, and as chairman/charter member of the Bayonne Historic Preservation Commission from 2002 until 2005.
Robert J. Burrows was a graduate of New York University. He was a dedicated employee of Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., where he worked for 42 years, serving as assistant vice president in the claim division before retiring from that position.
He was predeceased by his twin sister, Kathleen Kleschinsky in 2006.
He was the loving husband of Marie Burrows [Kimber Learning Center Bayonne]; and the father of five children, Robert Burrows, Eileen Shanahan, Maureen Strifflino, Richard Burrows and Kimberly Birdsall; grandfather of six, Anthony, Matthew, Megan, Joseph, Zachary and Ali.
Sweeney Funeral Home, Bayonne, handled the arrangements. Entombment took place at Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, North Arlington.
Edward H. Haring
Long Branch resident Edward H. [Ted] Haring, formerly of Brick, died on Monday, June 18, surrounded by his family and under the loving care of the Saint Barnabas Hospice Unit, at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. He leaves behind many loved ones, including family in Sea Girt.
He was 89 years old.
Mr. Haring was born and raised in East Orange, and graduated from East Orange High School. He resided in Nutley, where he and his late wife, Jean, raised their five children.
Ted was employed with the Defense Industry during World War II, and following the war, he began a life long career in financial management with the Continental Can Company, of Montclair.
Ted served as an usher for his church parishes in Nutley, Toms River and North Palm Beach, Fla. He was also active with the Knights of Columbus, of Nutley, and an active volunteer with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.
Ted was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Louis [nee Platt] Haring; his beloved wife of 65 years, Jean [nee Maley] Haring; and his two brothers, Jack and Bob Haring.
Surviving are his five children, Barbara Cundari, of Sea Girt; Richard Haring and his wife, Pam, of Lexington, S.C., Pat O’Dowd and her husband, Joe, of Pine Brook, Janet Cristini and her husband, Joe, of New Boston, N.H., and Don Haring and his wife, Paulette, of Long Branch, with whom he resided.
Ted was also blessed with 14 wonderful grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a large extended family. In particular, his six nieces and nephews held a very special place in his heart. He will always be remembered with love, as a hard working, highly principled, dedicated family man.
Funeral services will be held today at 8:30 a.m., at the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, Wall, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial
at St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church, 215 Crescent Parkway, Sea Girt.
Entombment will follow at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt.
Donations in memory of Mr. Haring can be made to Saint Barnabas Hospice at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch.
Thomas A. Ferguson
Borough Administrator of Spring Lake Thomas A. Ferguson died Thursday, June 14, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was 34 years old.
Born in Westchester County, N.Y., Tom graduated summa cum laude from Pace University, Dyson College Honors Program, with a bachelor of arts degree in political science. He earned a masters degree in public administration from SUNY University at Albany, where he met his wife Julie [nee Kulesa]. Tom received many academic honors and was inducted into several honor societies throughout his higher education.
Tom’s short, but accomplished career, was fueled by his love of municipal government management. Tom held internships in N.Y. with the Villages of Croton and Pleasantville, the counties of Westchester and Schenectady, and the City of Albany.
Upon graduation from SUNY Albany, Tom was employed by the Village of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., where he was promoted to manager. In 2001, Tom became the borough administrator in Spring Lake. While in that position, Tom became a N.J. Registered Municipal Clerk and a Credentialed City Manager through the International City/County Management Association [ICMA].
Under the direction of the council, Tom secured ICMA and “Tree City” designations for the borough, and he brought numerous community and capital projects to successful completion.
Tom’s years working in Spring Lake were the most personally and professionally fulfilling of his life. Spring Lake, his wife, son, and the Yankees were his passions.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife of nine and one-half years, Julie, and his adored three year-old son, Andrew. He is also survived by immediate family and friends in Westchester County and Syracuse, N.Y.; and his large extended family -- the superb borough staff, the council and community volunteers and leaders of Spring Lake.

Clarence E. Berger Jr
Spring Lake resident Clarence E. “Cuie” Berger Jr. died Tuesday, June 12, at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch.
He was 80 years old.
Born in Newark in 1927, Cuie spent his childhood in Shrewsbury. He moved to Spring Lake in 1952, after marrying his wife, Peggy.
A graduate of The Pennington School and Babson University, Cuie was a World War II veteran, serving in the infantry.
He worked for M & Q Plastics Products in Freehold as its plant manager from 1950 until his retirement in 1992.
He was a life member and past chief of the Spring Lake Fire Company 1 and an officer of The Fireman's Relief Organization. An avid skier and tennis player, Cuie lived life to the fullest, traveling the world with his family and friends. A lifelong outdoorsman, he spent many happy hours fishing off the coast in his boats. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his family and sharing his love of the Spring Lake boardwalk, photography, gardening and the New York Giants with them.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret “Peggy” Berger; their three daughters, Karen Haulenbeek of Spring Lake, Mary Pignataro of Spring Lake Heights, and Susan Flaherty of Manasquan; five grandchildren, Joseph Pignataro Jr., Matthew Pignataro, Brendan Pignataro, Meghan Pignataro, and Anna Lee Flaherty; his sons-in-law, John Haulenbeek of Spring Lake, Joseph Pignataro Sr. of Spring Lake Heights, and Brian Flaherty of Wall; his sister, Marilyn Burr of Jupiter, Fla.; and his brother, Richard Berger of Squantum, Mass.

Jane B. Dooley
Spring Lake Heights resident Jane B. Dooley died on Monday, June 11, at the Arbors, in Spring Lake Heights.
She was 85 years old.
Born in Harrison, she lived in Kearny and then resided in Sea Girt for many years, before coming to Spring Lake Heights, three years ago.
Mrs. Dooley was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and attained the rank of sergeant.
She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Fred Dooley.
She is survived by her brother, Leo Dunaj; daughters and son-in-laws, Beverly Dooley West and Thomas, of Spring Lake and Patricia Fenley and Earl, of Brick.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She also leaves five grandchildren, Morgan, Justin, Brendan, Brian and Matthew.
She was laid to rest at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt.
