Irene Whelan Watters
Phoenix, Ariz. resident Irene Whelan Watters, formerly of Sea Girt and Brielle, died Thursday, June 14 at Huger Mercy Living Center in Phoenix.
She was 100 years old.
Born in New York City, she spent her childhood in Grantwood, Palisades Park, where she graduated from Cliffside Park High School, having excelled in basketball and tennis.
She graduated from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. in 1928 and earned a master’s degree in 18th century English from Columbia University in New York in 1943. Her studies included a year at the Sorbonne in France, where she became an ardent and lifelong Francophile. During that year, she attended the opera, skied in Switzerland, and traveled throughout Europe.
She attended Miss Conklin’s Secretarial School and took a position with Walter Chrysler Jr., as his secretary in the then-brand-new Chrysler Building.
Married at St. Catharine’s Church in Spring Lake in 1939 to William F. Watters, she and her husband settled in Short Hills. She attended the New York School of Interior Design and later moved to Sea Girt, when Bill purchased The Coast Advertiser, a weekly paper in Belmar. After Bill’s death in 1963, Irene ran the paper until a buyer could be found.
Obtaining a second master’s degree, this time in library science, from Rutgers University in New Jersey, she became a reference librarian for the new Monmouth County Library in Shrewsbury.
Irene and her sister Bernadette W. Watters retired to Scottsdale, Ariz. in the 1980s, returning to the Jersey Shore each summer and always pursuing her passions for watercolor, conversational French, and the theater.
Life for “Renie” was a joy. Everything was “beautiful, ” “wonderful,” “extraordinary,” “tres magnifique.” There wasn’t anyone or anything she didn’t like. She would begin a perfect day with Mass and a walk on the Sea Girt boardwalk. Her artwork adorns the walls of many fortunate family members and friends, coast to coast.
Irene was predeceased by her husband; her sister, Bernadette; and brothers James, Joseph and Vincent Whelan.
She is survived by three generations of her beloved nieces and nephews, locally by Bernadette “Bizi” Reidy of Brielle, and Maureen Watters of Phoenix.
Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, handled the arrangements. Interment

Camille Rita Clark
Spring Lake Heights resident Camille Rita Clark died Friday, June 15 in her home.
She was 79 years old.
Born and raised in North Bergen, she lived in Belmar, Interlaken, and Bradley Beach, before moving to Spring Lake Heights four years ago.
She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Clark was a communicant of Ascension Roman Catholic Church in Bradley Beach and a member of Women of Zion in New Jersey.
She was predeceased by her brother, Anthony Racioppi.
Surviving are her loving husband of 54 years, Walter M. Clark; son and daughter-in-law Brian M. and Leslie Clark of Brick; daughters and sons-in-law, Catherine and David Martin of State College, Pa., and Colleen Ann and Steven DeGrandis of Forked River, Lacey. She also leaves her brother, Joseph Racioppi of Manasquan; sisters, Marie Monaco of Cliffside Park and Dorothy Solamone of Long Branch; and four grandchildren, Brooke, Danielle, Ian and Ashley.
O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, handled the arrangements. Interment

Adele M. Renna
Wall resident Adele M. [nee Frattarola] Renna died Tuesday, June 5, at Meridian Nursing and Rehab, Brick.
She was 78 years old.
Born in Harrison, N.Y., Adele lived in Wall for over 40 years. She was a parishioner of St. Denis Church, Manasquan.
Adele was predeceased by her loving husband, Nathan Renna; a daughter, Carol Miller; and two brothers, Duranto and Gene Frattarola.
She is survived by her three sons, Gary Renna, David Renna, Richard Renna; a brother, William Frattarola; a sister, Alice Fisher; and five grandchildren.
All services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Marion Elizabeth Krayl
Belmar resident Marion Elizabeth Krayl died Friday, June 15 in her home.
She was 101 years old.
Born in Newark, she lived in Belmar for 70 years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert.
Surviving are her niece, Audrey DiPasquale and her husband Gabe of Belmar; her nephew, Robert Maguire and his wife Pat of Tennessee; a cousin, Virginia Johnston of Virginia; a great-niece, Terri Owens of Belmar; and a great-nephew, Robert Longo of Wall.

Marilyn Coburn
Sea Girt resident Marilyn MacNee Coburn died Wednesday, June 13, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, following a long-term illness.
She was 80 years old.
She was the founder, director and guiding spirit of “Friends of Special Children, ” a voluntary organization which has provided year long athletic, social and recreational services to the special needs children and adults, of southern Monmouth County, for the past 29 years.
Born in Newark, she was a graduate of Good Counsel High School and Caldwell College. In earlier years, she taught school in the public and parochial school systems of northern New Jersey and Connecticut, and later, in addition to her significant voluntary activities, was a part time assistant at the Children’s Center, Tinton Falls.
She was a communicant of St. Mark’s Church, of Sea Girt, a past president and treasurer of its Altar Rosary Societies and past member of the parish’s Social Concerns committee.
Her life mission was to expand community awareness of the inherent values and virtues of those born with special needs. Her legacy was the creation of bonds of friendship, caring and sharing between and among her special athletes and those who worked with them. She was the recipient of many awards including the Veritas Award, the highest alumnae award from Caldwell College, the Evelyn Dolan Citizens Award for Advocacy and Promotion of Recreation for the Disabled from the state of New Jersey, and, in 2003, the Manasquan Elks Citizen of the Year award. Although beset by serious illness throughout a large portion of her life, she carried her work forward with true passion. In this she was aided by a group of dedicated volunteers and by the support of local service organizations, including the New Jersey Board of Special Olympics, who awarded her a Lifetime Achievement Award and membership in its Hall of Fame.
During her youth, she was a member and past president of the Junior A’ Kempis Society of Essex County. She was a member of Ladies Auxiliaries of the Manasquan Elks and a past social member of the Spring Lake Golf Club. She was a lover and long time student of the ballet giving lessons to children’s groups in her college years.
Above all, she was a true friend of the special children to whom she gave guidance and love for so many years of her life.
She is predeceased by her son, G. James Coburn III, and is survived by her husband, G. James Coburn; her brother James MacNee, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; her sister, Claire Hennig, of Ocean Grove; her son, J. Scott Coburn and his wife, Eileen Coburn, of Darien Conn.; her son, Gerard [“Jerry”] Coburn, of Sea Girt; her daughter, Christine Coburn, of New York City; and grandchildren, Michael, Marietta and Madeline.
Interment was at St Ann’s Cemetery, in Wall.

Frances M. Colton
Chapel Hill, N.C. resident Frances M. Colton, formerly of Spring Lake Heights, died on Monday, June 18 at the Alterra Windwood Assisted Living Facility, in Chapel Hill, N.C.
She was 88 years old.
Born and raised in Kearny, Mrs. Colton raised her family in North Arlington and lived in Spring Lake Heights for many years, before moving to Chapel Hill nine years ago.
She was a former member of St. Catharine’s Roman Catholic Church, Spring Lake.
She was predeceased by her husband, William E., in 2007, and by her brother, William Nolan.
Surviving are three sons and their spouses, William F. and JoAnn, of Chapel Hill, N.C., Robert E. and Irene, of Lawrenceville, Dennis and Kathi, of Hasbrouck Heights; two daughters and their spouses, Carol and Martin Elwood, of Olivenhain, Calif., and Sharon and John Sanady, of Sussex; four sisters, Marie Devaney, of Colorado, Betty Hines, of Belmar, Peggy Sharin, of Spring Lake Heights, and Nancy Nolan, of Lake Como; and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visiting will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.
The Mass will be celebrated Friday, at 9:30 a.m., at St. Catharine’s Roman Catholic Church, Spring Lake.
Entombment will be at St. Catharine’s Cemetery.
Constance Blatchford
Brielle resident Constance “Connie” Blatchford died Sunday, June 10 in her home.
She was 82 years old.
Connie was an avid golfer, and a former member of Spring Meadow 8 a.m. Ladies Group, Bel Aire Babes, Colonial Terrace, and Jumping Brook Ladies Group.
She was also a former member of the Lavallette Yacht Club and Manasquan Women’s Club.
Connie loved all animals and worked for many animal groups. She will always be remembered for her conscious effort for a better environment and the preservation of open space.
Connie and her beloved husband of 60 years, Arthur, loved to spend time together, especially traveling abroad to many exotic countries.
She was born in Plainfield and graduated from Plainfield High School, and St. Peter’s School of Nursing.
She is survived by her husband, George Arthur Blatchford; and a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Daniel Kennedy of Manchester. Connie is also survived by two grandchildren, Kerry Kennedy and her husband Michael Amejka, and Brian and Erin Kennedy; and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Liam.
Orender Family Home for Funerals, Wall, handled the arrangements. Interment
will be private.
