Jeffery Ross Witte
New Orleans, La. resident Jeffery Ross Witte, who had a brother in Brielle, died Friday, April 3 in his home after a six year battle with cancer.

He was 61 years old.

After attending school in Point Pleasant Beach and graduating from the Peddie School in Highstown in 1966, he attended the University of South Carolina until joining the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he was stationed at Long Bihn then permanently assigned to Tokyo.

Jeff was an adventurer and had several careers during his lifetime including cab driver in Portland, Ore., Atlantic Coast clam boat captain, organic farmer in Mercerburg, Pa. [at the beginning of the natural foods movement], jewelry designer and antiques dealer. While living in rural Pennsylvania he became interested in American antique furniture. As a self taught antiquarian, he attended countless farm and estate sales, antique shows and markets. After moving to New Orleans in 1992, he opened an antique shop in the French Quarter and mastered the techniques of furniture restoration.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Hospice Care Louisiana for their help during the last few weeks, the staff of the New Orleans Veterans Hospital and the many friends who have given their support and friendship.

He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Charles Norman Witte of Point Pleasant Beach.

He is survived by his wife, Doris M. Mollenkopf and daughter, Lydia H. Witte, both of New Orleans; a sister Carole Carr of Point Pleasant Beach; and his brother, Charles Witte of Brielle.

There will be a memorial gathering for Jeff on Sunday, June 14 for family and friends at his sister’s house, 303 New York Avenue, Point Pleasant Beach from 1 to 4 p.m.

Ralph Addonizio
Allenwood and Viera, Fla. resident Ralph Addonizio died Sunday, May 10 surrounded by his loving family.

He was 75 years old.

He was born and raised in Newark and attended Arts High School in Newark.

Ralph served in the Army from 1958 to 1962, stationed in Hawaii. After his military service he was a Field Supervisor for the Newark Housing Authority [HUD]. After leaving HUD, he pursued his entrepreneurial spirit. Ralph’s passion was real estate. He held a N.J. State Real Estate License and greatly enjoyed buying, selling and building properties. He jointly owned the Jolly-Mar hotel and restaurant in Belmar [Reggie’s]; the Essex Manor Hotel in East Orange and South Orange Liquors. He was a master craftsman and artisan in all trades. The other passion in Ralph’s life was walking. His favorite places to walk were boardwalk in Spring Lake, the beach in Naples, Fla., and his home in Viera.

Ralph was predeceased by his father, Ralph Addonizio; his mother, Mary Addonizio; and his sister, Rozlyn Mazzarella.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Carol Ann Rose Addonizio; his step children, Tracie Mann of Neptune, Joseph Rose of Naples, and June Jasman of Brielle; his brother, Frank Addonizio of Allenwood; his sisters, Florence Aaronson of Wall and Dolly Verdi of Wall; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to call tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 16, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Atlantic View Cemetery, Manasquan.

Loretta Boyd Venezia
Spring Lake Heights resident Loretta Boyd Venezia died on Monday, Sept. 22 in her home.

She was 88 years old.

Loretta Boyd Venezia, “Nanny, ” a wonderful, strong person, an exceptional sister, wife, mother, and friend left the Earth peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. She was a very intelligent woman, who retired from the stock transfer department of Dean Witter in her late 70s.

Loretta reluctantly moved from her beloved Jersey City, five years ago because her children meant so much to her and they wanted to move to the Jersey Shore.

The Shore was not unfamiliar to her as she spent her youth at the Uncle Bill’s Off Shore Inn in Point Pleasant Beach. She and her husband, Carmine, also brought their children to the beach for vacations every summer. Later on, she spent much of her summers in Manasquan, Spring Lake and Sea Girt with her family.

Loretta loved Irish music and belonged to Ireland’s 32 clubs of Bayonne. She was also a member of Saint Aloysius Senior Club.

Until a few years ago, she enjoyed getting on the bus in Spring Lake with one or another of her sisters and going to the casinos in Atlantic City for the day.

Loretta taught her children to love and take care of each other and to be generous with their time and possessions to all. She was a survivor and a dynamic person, who loved life and always lived it to the fullest. She was always ready to go.

Loretta was predeceased by her parents, John Boyd and Mary McCauley; her brother, James Boyd; and her sisters, Evelyn Romano, Margaret Dorsett and Muriel Iorio Burke. Her husband of 57 years, Carmine, passed away in 1993.

She is survived by all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; two sisters; a brother-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Her children and their spouses are Carmine and Sarah, James and Laura, Phillip and Karen, Lauren and Dr. Richard Gill, Margaret and Aaron Bier, and Dina and Jim Wojtkiewicz, with whom she lived and who cared for her, as no other could for the past four years. She is also survived by her sisters and brother-in-law Mary Burke, and Geraldine and Albert Salerno; and daughters-in-law Barbara and Arlene Venezia.

Relatives and friends are invited to call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 26 at St. Catharine’s Roman Catholic Church, Spring Lake. Burial will be on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 11 a.m. at Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to VNA of Central Jersey, Red Bank, in Loretta’s memory.

Gladys G. Birkenhauer
Spring Lake Heights resident Gladys G. Birkenhauer, also of Stuart, Fla., died Sept. 22 with family at her side at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, after a short illness.

Gladys was a graduate of Columbia High School, South Orange and graduated from a business school.

She was a treasurer for Carteret Savings and Loan before becoming a homemaker and mother.

Gladys, her husband, Edwin, her brother, Richard Caspar and her son, Edward, owned Matawan Lumber for many years.

She was a member of the Spring Lake Bath and Tennis Club and the Spring Lake Golf Club.

Gladys was born in Newark, and was raised in South Orange. She loved the beach and summered with her parents and nine brothers and sisters in Avon, spending much time with her family at the Belmar Fishing Club. Bud and Gladys have lived in Kansas City, Mo., Baltimore, Marysville, Ohio and York, Pa. and spent the last 25 years in the New Jersey shore area.

Gladys is survived by her husband of 63 years, Edwin G. Birkenhauer Jr.; and her son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Candace Birkenhauer, of Brielle; a daughter and son-in-law, Regine and Pat Dallosta, of Lothian, Md. and Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Kristen Birkenhauer and her fiancé, Matt Cooper, of Charlotte, N.C., Derek Birkenhauer of Hoboken, Amanda Birkenhauer, of Brielle, and Matt Dallosta of Lothian, Md.

The Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Wall, is in charge of arrangements. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle.

Lynn Phillips Farrar
Avon-by-the-Sea resident Lynn Phillips Farrar died Wednesday, Sept. 17 in his home.

He was 57 years old.

Born in Waynesburg, Pa., he lived in Long Branch before coming to Avon 20 years ago.

Lynn attended Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, prior to studying at the Berkeley College of Music, Boston, as a piano and bass guitar major.

A well-known, and deeply loved presence on the Jersey Shore music entertainment scene, his unique voice, unmistakable sound on the the bass guitar will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure to experience it, either in the audience, or sharing the stage with him.

An avid football and baseball fan, Lynn entertained, and informed many with his incredible knowledge of sports history. Never one to forget his roots, the Pittsburgh Steelers have another fan looking down from above, the Pirates will know he’s pulling for them, and the Mets will appreciate any assistance he can offer.

He was a member of the Memphis Rockabilly Band, with whom he toured the eastern U.S. and Europe, and was later a member of the Billy Lawlor Band for 23 years.

He was predeceased by his brother, Kim; and his parents, Charles E. and June Orndoff Farrar.

Lynn is survived by his aunt, Jean O. Myers, of Leechburg, Pa.; his brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Sally Farrar, of Hershey, Pa.; and his nephews, Derek and Bryan; his niece, Erin; and adopted family in New Jersey, Billy and Linda Lawlor, their sons, Patrick, Will and his wife, Katie. He also leaves behind his band mates and many dear friends.

A memorial service will be offered on Sunday Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, you may make a contribution to Catholic Charities Behavioral Health Care, Diocese of Trenton, in memory of Lynn Farrar or Kevin Lawlor.

Marie Josephine McHugh
Brielle resident Marie Josephine McHugh died Saturday, Sept. 20 in her home.

She was 75 years old.

Known to all as “Jo, ” she was born in Newark to August and Mary Davino. Raised in Orange, she graduated Orange High School in 1950.

She married Thomas Peter McHugh, settling in Livingston to raise their family. Jo was a caring daughter and sister, a loving wife of 45 years, and a wonderful mom and nana.

She moved to Brielle following Tom’s passing in 2003 to be closer to her family.

Jo pursed her artistic flair and volunteered for the Visiting Nurse Association Thrift Shop in Manasquan.

Jo generously gave of herself to family, friends, and community throughout her life, with a natural concern and a special warmth. She will be missed by all who experience her gentle kindness, most especially her loving family that remains.

Surviving are her children Mary McHugh, Martin McHugh Sr. and his wife, Cheryl; her sisters, Laura Weisbecker, Louise Devine and Catherine Kerris; her grandchildren, Martin McHugh Jr. and William Thomas; and her sisters-in-law, Rita Davino, Susan Kaschak, and Richard and Audrey McHugh. She also left behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, and their children.

Friends may call today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Neary Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. A funeral Mass will be offered on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake.

A Mass enrolling Jo into the St. Phil’s Memorial Society will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, at St. Philomena’s Church in Livingston, where she was a dedicated member for 44 years. Those wishing to make memorial contributions may send them to VNACNJ Thrift Shop, Manasquan.

Robert ‘Bob’ Mahoney
Wall resident Robert “Bob” Mahoney died on Saturday Sept. 20, in his home.

He was 69 years old.

Born in Orange, he lived in West Orange before coming to Wall 18 years ago.

Mr. Mahoney was employed as conductor with Amtrak in New York City, retiring in 2001.

He was a communicant of St. Denis Church in Manasquan, a longtime parish member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in West Orange, a member of the Knights of Columbus Rev. John F. Welsh Council No. 3231, the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh of the Jersey Shore and Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh of Essex County. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Manasquan Elks Lodge 2534, Jerry Lynch Social & Civic Club, American Legion Post No. 346, Greater Point Pleasant Chapter of the Old Guard, and the National Association of Retired & Veteran Railway Employees.

He was proud veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Eileen Mannix and Margaret Mahoney; and his brothers, Father Daniel Mahoney, James, Robert, Cornelius and William Mahoney. He was also predeceased by his nephews, Brian Mannix, Kevin Mahoney; his sisters-in-law, Barbara Mahoney and Mary Mahoney; and his brother-in-law Matty Mannix.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews and their spouses, Tim Mahoney and Allison, Dennis Mahoney and Mary Jo, Maureen Mahoney, Kim Mahoney, Susan Reilly, Kathy Lewinski and Russell, Billy Mahoney and Cindy, Ellen Salmons and Wayne, James Mahoney and Kim, James Mahoney and Kathleen, John Mahoney and Patricia, Michael Mahoney and Trisha, Sherry Mannix, James Mannix and Rose, Aileen Mannix, Kate Huttner and Kenneth, Matthew Mannix and Maureen, Maureen Burke and Jeffrey, Daniel Mannix and Mary, Dennis Mannix, Patrick Mannix, Robert Mannix and Tami, Danny Mahoney and Sissy, Patty Mahoney, Jean Walker and Dennis, Margaret Itugesen and Ken, James Mahoney and Geanine and Paul Mahoney.

He is also survived by 65 great-nieces and nephews; by 15 great-great-nieces and nephews; and a host of dear friends that meant the world to him.

Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home 2028 Route 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall. A Mass in his honor will take place at Our Lady of Lourdes Church West Orange, followed by burial at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Montclair.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
