Joan Cullman Minos Phelps
Former Manasquan resident Joan Cullman Minos Phelps died Dec. 25 at her home in San Diego, Calif. She was 81 years old.
As a teenager a star of local playhouses, Mrs. Phelps made her professional acting debut with the Children’s World Theater in New York City, after graduating from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, also located in New York, in the spring of 1948. Previously, she had received her high school diploma from Manasquan High School, Class of 1945, where she was president of the drama club.
Her acting career took her to local stages such as the Spring Lake and Millstream [Wall Township] Playhouses, and she did summer stock theater the summer of 1949 with the Barnstormers of Tamworth, N.H., where she was cast many times alongside noted actress Colleen Dewhurst. Later, she performed at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, Pa., and after she moved to San Diego, the Old Globe Theater, still a popular theater venue today.
Her first marriage, to James Minos Sr., in July 1950, caused her relocation to the West Coast as Mr. Minos was a United States Navy Signal Corps. radar engineer who was assigned to the San Diego Naval Base. They met when Mr. Minos was stationed at Fort Monmouth for 18 months, and Miss Cullman was performing in shows at the base. After marrying in St. Denis Church in Manasquan, the couple drove cross-country to make their home in San Diego.
Mrs. Phelps continued her acting career in San Diego, joining the cast at the town’s Old Globe Theater, and after welcoming their two sons to the family, she acted in shows there throughout the 1950s and early 1960s. She also worked as a fashion model for San Diego area department stores.
When her acting career ended, Mrs. Phelps returned to school at San Diego City College in the early 1970s, where she earned her Licensed Practical Nursing credential in 1972. Her first marriage ended in divorce, and she subsequently moved to Redwood City, Calif. to work at PTI, an experimental methadone clinic that later became a standard in the field of treatment for heroin addiction. She treated hundreds of patients successfully in her 17 years at PTI, and called those years the most satisfying of her working life because she was able to positively influence so many lives.
She retired from PTI in 1990, and returned to San Diego for her retirement, where she spent many happy days at her Sunset Cliffs home. By now also divorced from her second husband, she assisted her son Jamie with his business and enjoyed spending time with her grandchild Chase. She traveled to Manasquan for the class of 1945’s 50th class reunion in 1995 and renewed many old friendships.
Surviving Ms. Phelps are her two sons, James [Jamie] Jr., of San Diego, and Christopher, of Arizona; Jamie’s partner Melissa Jackson; her grandson, Chase A. Minos; her two ex-husbands, James Minos Sr., of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Parks Phelps of Marin County, Calif.; her sister, Grace Cullman Buehler of Cherry Hill and Sea Girt; her nieces Joan Buehler, Blair Ransom and Barbara Royal, nephew Carl J. Buehler III; and seven grand-nieces and nephews. Services are private at the request of the family.
