Mary Elizabeth Kohler Sr.
Spring Lake resident Mary Elizabeth Kohler Sr. [nee Wolfe] “Gaga” died Wednesday, Dec. 31 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

The youngest of 14 children, she was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, N.Y. She moved to Spring Lake in 1946 as the wife of Maurice A. Kohler, who preceded her into heaven in 1979.

She worked as a Realtor for many years on the South Shore, but her main and chosen profession was foremost a devoted mother and head of her large and still expanding family.

Mary is survived by her six daughters; Renee Keefe and son-in-law Patrick Keefe, of Spring Lake, Denise Thwing and son-in-law Roger Thwing, of Rumson, Kathy Viemeister and son-in-law John “Perry” Viemeister, of Brielle, Annette Smith and son-in-law Joseph Smith, of Spring Lake Heights, Mary Elizabeth Kohler Jr., of Spring Lake Heights, Michelle Kohler and her partner Karen Noe, of Wall; and her niece Bernadette “Dookie” Tricker and her husband George, of Woodland Hills, Calif, who also claimed her as an adoring mother.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Christopher Keefe and his wife, Jennifer Bardsley, Matthew Keefe, David Thwing and his wife, Veronica Thwing, Denise Thwing, Jennifer Thwing, Karl Viemeister, Katie Heeseman, wife of Eric Heeseman, Heather Briggs, wife of Jason Briggs, Michael Smith, Stephen Smith, Amanda Smith, Olivia Carr, and Joey Carr; and great-grandchildren John Henry Heeseman, James Patrick Keefe, and Anthony Jason Briggs.

Mary was also a beloved aunt to Bernadette Sherman, of Pasadena, Calif. and Veronica Wolfe, of Whiting.

Arrangements were by O’Brien Funeral Home. Burial following at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

Donations in her name may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Jean B. Sentner
Wall resident Jean B. Sentner died Monday, Jan. 5 at Tower Lodge, Wall.

She was 90 years old.

Jean was born and raised in Nutley. She moved to Brick in 1980 and lived there until 2007 before moving to Wall. Jean was a member of St. Raphael’s Episcopal Church, Brick. She was a book keeper for 15 years at Mutual Benefit Life, Newark. Jean was a member of the Woman’s Auxiliary of the Elks, Brick. Jean enjoyed gardening and playing bingo.

Jean was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Frank Sentner in 1998, and a son, Gerald Goodman, in 1983.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Richard Furey of Spring Lake, and a son and daughter-in-law Michael and Kathleen Goodman of Raleigh, N.C. Also surviving are four grandchildren Joshua, Jeanmarie, David and Daniel, as well as a sister-in-law Barbara Goodman of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Arrangements are private and under the direction of Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan. Memorial donations can be made to Sister’s Academy 1416 Springwood Avenue, Asbury Park 07712.

George Mueller
Wall resident George Mueller died Tuesday, Dec. 30 in his home.

He was 52 years old.

George was born on Feb. 5, 1956 in St. Cloud, Minn.

In 1975, he joined the US Army and was trained at the Defense Language Institute in Monterry, Calif. where he gained proficiency in German. Until 1979, he worked at Army Intelligence in Munich, Germany.

Upon returning to the United States, George graduated from St. Cloud State University in 1981, and joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation in New Haven, Conn. There he did general investigative work and eventually got his pilot’s license independently, later joining the Special Operatives Group of New York in 1988.

George has flown thousands of hours of missions relating to counterintelligence activities and criminal matters. In his 23 years with the FBI, he took part in countless high-profile cases including Pan AM 103, the Columbus Interstate 270 shootings, TWA Flight 800, and various cases related to kidnappings, bank robberies and espionage. Most recently, his work involved counter terrorism activities relating to the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Upon retiring from the FBI in 2007, George maintained an independent handyman business and became active in the Parent Faculty Association at High Technology High School in Lincroft, his most favorite place.

George was predeceased by his parents, Rudolph and Gisela Mueller.

Surviving is his beloved wife, Penny; son, John; sister, Barbara Stair; brothers John Mueller and wife, Judith, and Tom Mueller and his wife, Carol; along with several nieces and nephews.

Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of the arrangements. Funeral services were then held followed by military honors.

Renee C. Tanay
Wall resident Renee C. Tanay died Sunday, Jan. 4 at Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack.

She was 55 years old.

Mrs. Tanay was born in Richmond, Va., and had lived in Farmingdale before moving to the Allenwood section of Wall.

She was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend to all. She was a member of the Manasquan United Methodist Church and an active member of the Howell High School Class of 1972.

She was a Weichert realtor in Sea Girt for the past three years. Prior to that, she was a realtor with Re/Max Shore and Country for seven years.

Renee will be missed and loved by her husband of 32 years, Craig J. Tanay. She is also survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law Ryan Tanay and his wife Karla, Gainesville, Fla., and Travis Tanay, Allenwood; one daughter, Brooke Tanay, Greenville, N.C.; two brothers and their families: Rick Allen and his wife Cindy, and their children Taylor and Becca, Farmingdale, and Randy Allen and his wife Ramey, and their children Erin and Lauren, Farmingdale.

Visitation was held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road [Rt. 524], Freehold. Friends and relatives are invited to attend her Celebration of Life Church Service today at 10 a.m. at the Manasquan United Methodist Church, 23 Church Street, Manasquan 08736 with Pastor Regina Albert officiating. Internment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Renee’s memory may be made to the Church. John F. “Jack” Mulrain
Spring Lake Heights resident John F. “Jack” Mulrain died Monday, Jan. 5 at the Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

He was 73 years old.

Jack was employed by Local No. 1 IATSE as a stagehand, working behind the scenes for numerous Broadway shows for over 30 years before he retired 10 years ago. He was a US Army Veteran during the Korean War from 1955-1957. He was an active member of the Manasquan Elks No. 2534 for 10 years and a member of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick of the Jersey Shore for 12 years.

Surviving are his beloved Norma [Provost], his sons Scott and his wife Just, Sean and daughter Shannon Tellechea and her husband Robin. He also leaves his devoted sister Linda Halligan, six step children, 27 loving grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Visiting will be today from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret’s RC Church in Spring Lake. Internment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made in his name to a charity of choice.

Joseph John Cosgrove
Joseph John Cosgrove, 92, of Sunset Beach, North Carolina and formerly of Brielle with family in Point Pleasant, passed away on March 27 in the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick, Bolivia, North Carolina.

Mr. Cosgrove was born March 11, 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of the late John Michael and Sally Cosgrove. He was a member of Saint Brendan the Navigator, Roman Catholic Church in Shallotte, North Carolina.

Mr. Cosgrove served in the African and European Theaters with the US Army as a Ranger during WWII. He received three Purple Heart awards for combat injuries.

Mr. Cosgrove was an avid outdoorsman; he loved nature, cooking and his family. He was preceded in death by his wife Anita Jean Cosgrove and a brother, Patrick Cosgrove.

Surviving are two sons, Joseph Shawn Cosgrove and wife Leslie of Goshen, New York, and Sean Cosgrove of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania; three daughters, Eileen Ford and husband Gary of Point Pleasant, Collen Cosgrove of Sunset Beach, North Carolina and Bonnie Jean Brown and husband John of Sarasota, Florida; a sister, Mary Weissenger of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; twelve grandchildren including Sean Joseph Ford; and two great-grandchildren.

White Funeral and Cremation Service Shallotte Chapel of Shallotte, North Carolina handled the arrangements.

Archie Higgins Gifford Jr.
Archie Higgins Gifford Jr., 85, of Point Pleasant, died April 24 at his home.

Born in Point Pleasant, he lived in Allenwood and Manasquan, before moving to Point Pleasant 60 years ago.

Mr. Gifford owned and operated Archie Gifford Mason in Point Pleasant for many years before retiring in 1992. He was an Korean War veteran of the United States Army and was a Past Master of F&A.M.; Lodge 89 in Spring Lake Heights, member of the Scottish Rite, active supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and a former deacon and elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Manasquan.

Mr. Gifford was predeceased by his daughter, Gail in 2010 and is survived by his high school sweetheart of 69 years, Joan [nee Appleget]; his son, Thomas and his wife Livia of Lake Helen, Florida; daughter Virginia Carroll and her husband Joseph of Brick; brother James of California; sisters, Eva Mae Musgrave and Mary Teter, both of New York; six grandchildren, Jessica Uvjary, Daniel Gifford, Christina Grassia, Evan Gifford, Samantha Carroll, Troy Gifford and his great granddaughter, Gabriella.

Neary-Quinn Funeral Home of Manasquan handled the arrangements.

Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Ianniello
Elizabeth “Betty” Ianniello [nee Axtt], 93, of Naples, Florida and formerly of Lavallette, died peacefully at Avow Hospice House on April 24.

Betty is survived by her three daughters, Betty Ann Beede [Paul] of Flemington, Elaine Roseman of Newton and Kathy [David] Caruso of Marco Island, Florida.

She is also survived by four grandsons and two great-grandsons.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Michael, son-in-law Samuel Roseman and her brother Raymond Axtt. Betty was born in Jersey City and lived in Lavallette prior to moving to Marco Island, Florida in 2005.

Betty was an avid bingo player. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, at 10:30 a.m. at Bistro Soleil, located at 100 Palm Street, Marco Island, Florida with refreshments to follow.

All are welcome to attend and celebrate Betty’s life.

A memorial service for family and friends in New Jersey will be held in June. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Betty's memory to Avow Hospice, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, Florida 34105.

Elissa E. McGill
Elissa E. McGill [Taylor] of Belmar, passed away peacefully on Nov. 11 at home. She was 76 years old.

Lisa worked as a registered nurse at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. After retiring from nursing she owned a gift store in Belmar called the Wooden Horse.

Lisa attended Saint Joseph’s Nursing School, in Patterson. She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Trenton State College and earned a master’s degree in nursing from Rutgers University.

She was a parishioner of Saint Rose RC Church, in Belmar, where she was also a former member the Altar Rosary Society.

Lisa was a former member of the Belmar Fishing Club and the Belmar Little League Ladies Auxiliary.

Born in Jersey City, Lisa moved to Belmar in 1963. She loved the pageantry of the races, the beauty of her gardens, and the thrill of Saratoga. She was a fan of the Mets, the Giants, and the Arsenal.

She loved her family deeply and will be sorely missed by all who had the honor and privilege to know her.

She is predeceased by her husband D’Arcy McGill [2000].

She is survived by her sons, Thomas R. McGill and his wife, Jane; George D. McGill and his wife, Robin; and her daughter, Lisa M. Orchard and her husband, Craig, all of Belmar; her brother, George Taylor and his wife, Margaret, of Summit; and her grandchildren, Holly, Patrick, Thomas, D’Arcy, Emma, Terence, and Eddie. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by her dear friend, Bill Fallon and her caregiver, Debbie Royal.

The Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar, was in charge of arrangements.

Interment was in Saint Anne’s Cemetery, in Wall Township.
