Herman W. Greene, 90
Underwriter; Drummer- Singer Had Own Orchestra
Herman W. Greene, 90, of Scotch Plains, died on Thursday, March 19, 1998 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Newark, Mr. Greene had lived in Chatham Township for 14 years before moving to Scotch Plains 14 years ago.
Mr. Greene had worked in the insurance industry for more than 50 years, starting as a secretary with the Schlesinger- Heller Insurance Company in Newark, which later merged with Gustav Jay Ltd. in Orange.
Mr. Greene subsequently became an underwriter for Benisch & Company in Orange for 17 years before retiring in 1982.
A drummer and a singer, he had his own orchestra, the Hy Greene Orchestra. Mr. Greene and his or chestra played at the Essex House, the Clinton Manor, Steiner Caterers, the Robert Treat Hotel and the Newark Athletic Club.
He was a member of the World Jewish Congress of New York, a charter member of Channel 13 of Newark, and a board member of American Federation of Musicians Union Local No. 16 of Morristown.
Surviving are a son, Alan Greene; two brothers, Joel Greene and Monroe Greene; a grandchild and three great- grandchildren.
Graveside services were held on Sunday, March 22, in Menorah Cemetery in Clifton. Arrangements were handled by the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
Betty Roberts Atkins, 47
Manager; Worked at St. Barnabas for 18 Years
Betty Roberts Atkins, 47, of Westfield, died on Saturday, March 21, 1998 at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
Born in East Orange, she had lived in Cranford for 22 years before moving to Westfield in 1983.
She was employed by St. Barnabas Medical Center as medical staff manager for 18 years.
She was a 1968 graduate of Cranford High School, and graduated from Becker College in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1970.
Mrs. Atkins was predeceased by her parents, Leroy Herbert and Lucretia Duckworth Roberts.
Surviving are a son, Jonathan David Atkins of Westfield; three sisters, Virginia McCracken of Derby, Kansas, Judy Markham of Westerville, Ohio and Nancy Page of Westfield.
A memorial service was held at St. Barnabas Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, in Westfield.
Sylvia Youngman, 76
Sylvia Youngman, 76, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, March 18 1998.
Born in Newark she had lived in Union before moving to Scotch Plains.
Mrs. Youngman had been a bookkeeper with Venet Advertising in Union for 10 years before retiring 11 years ago.
Surviving is her husband, David Youngman.
Graveside services were held on Sunday, March 22, at Beth David Memorial Park in Kenilworth. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
Gertrude Hoff, 91
Gertrude P. Hoff, 91, of Whiting died on Monday, March 16, 1998 in Hamilton Place at Keswick Pines in Whiting.
Born in Newark, Miss Hoff had lived in Westfield before moving to Whiting last year.
She had been employed for 42 years with Prudential Insurance Company in Newark before retiring as a supervising clerk in 1969.
Miss Hoff was a member of the Missionary Society and the Bible classes, both at the Whiting Bible Church in Whiting.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 22, in the Anderson Campbell Funeral Home in Whiting.
Emma Obrock, 86
Won Dance Title; Member of Local Hearing Society
Emma Rose Obrock, 86, of Westfield died on Wednesday, March 18, 1998 at home.
Born in Bayonne, she had lived in Cranford before moving to Westfield 30 years ago.
Mrs. Obrock had been the executive secretary to the vice president of the National Lead Company in New York City for 10 years before leaving the firm many years ago.
She was a member of the Woman's Club of Westfield and the Hearing Society of Westfield, and was a former member of the Echo Lake Country Club, also in Westfield.
She was also a founding member of the Cerebral Palsy League of New Jersey, located in Union.
Mrs. Obrock won a national championship in waltz and tango dancing at the Harvest Moon Ball held in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
She was predeceased by her son, Raymond Obrock, in 1950.
Surviving are her husband, Raymond Obrock; a son, Frederick Obrock of Scotch Plains, and two sisters, Margaret Mager of Clark and Mary Clark of Edison.
Private services were conducted on Saturday, March 21, by Monsignor John O'Connor from St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church in Garwood and the Reverend George Freyberger from the Calvary Lutheran Church in Cranford. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Funeral services were under the direction of the Gray Memorial Funeral Home, 12 Springfield Avenue, Cranford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hearing Society of Westfield, 170 Elm Street, Westfield, 07090.

Christine Staskiewicz, 86, of Mountainside died on Sunday, March 22, 1998 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Pennsylvania, she had lived in Irvington before moving to Mountainside 42 years ago.
Surviving are a son, Edward Stacy; three sisters, Mary Sobeck, Ann Stesney and Rose Stankiewicz; two brothers, Paul Cebrick and Andrew Cebrick; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, March 25, in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside, following the funeral from the McCracken Funeral Home in Union.
Ralph Jackson, Jr., 50
Iron Worker; Air Force Veteran of Vietnam War
Ralph E. Jackson, Jr., 50, of Bernards Township died on Monday, March 16, 1998 in Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.
Born in Plainfield, he had lived in Scotch Plains and Warren before moving to Bernards Township in 1983.
He was an iron worker for the Ironworkers Union Local No. 11 of Bloomfield for 24 years.
He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Jackson was a member of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood American Legion Post No. 209 and the National Street Rod Association.
He was predeceased by his father, Ralph E. Jackson, Sr., in 1968.
Surviving are a son, Joseph Jackson; a daughter, Annmarie Jackson; his mother, Grace McManus Jackson; two sisters, Linda Jackson and Mrs. Sandy Freund, and a grandchild. Funeral services were held on Friday, March 20, in the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
