Mabel G. Young
Longtime Volunteer; Inspiration for Good Neighbor Award
Mabel G. Young, 86, of Winter Park, Florida, formerly of Mountainside, died on Thursday, March 19, 1998 at Winter Park Hospital.
Born in Philadelphia, she had lived in Mountainside for 45 years before moving to Winter Park in 1982.
Mrs. Young had been a teacher in the Mountainside public school system for many years, and was also active in many civic associations while living in the borough. She was a member and Past President of the Women's Club, a member of the Board of Trustees of the United Way of Mountainside, a lifetime member and officer of the Parent-Teacher Association, and a member and Past President of the Mountainside chapter of the American Association of University Women.
She was also a member of the Senior Citizens Club Mountainside, a member of the Mountainside Music Association, a member and officer of the Mountainside Teachers Association and a member of the Republican Club of Mountainside.
Mrs. Young also worked with Mobile Meals and served as a library volunteer.
In 1982, the Borough Council of Mountainside recognized her many years of volunteer service to the community by establishing the Mabel G. Young Good Neighbor Award. It is awarded annually to individuals for their contributions to the community.
Mrs. Young was a member of the Winter Park Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are a son, Richard Young of Plainfield; a daughter, Virginia Leiz of Westfield, and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, March 24, at the Winter Park Presbyterian Church, 400 South Lakemont Avenue, Winter Park, 32792.
A second memorial service will be held this Saturday, March 28, at 11 a.m. in the Mountainside Community Presbyterian Church on the corner of Deer Path and Meeting House Lane.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Carey Hand Cox-Parker Funeral Home in Winter Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Winter Park Presbyterian Church at the church address.
Anthony DeCristofaro, 56
Veteran; Was Former Owner of Duke's Deli
Anthony P. DeCristofaro, 56, of Matawan died on Tuesday, March 24, 1998 at home.
Born in Scotch Plains, he had lived in Westfield and Manahawkin prior to moving to Matawan eight years ago.
Mr. DeCristofaro was the owner of Main Street Subs & Deli in Matawan, and formerly owned Duke's Deli in Westfield. He was in the food service business for 30 years.
He was a United States Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Ilona Hoptay DeCristofaro; two sons, Anthony "TJ" DeCristofaro and Jesse Craig DeCristofaro, both of Matawan; a daughter, Devon Ashley DeCristofaro of Matawan; his parents, Anthony L. and Angeline Chuffo DeCristofaro of Scotch Plains; a brother, Louis DeCristofaro of Scotch Plains, and a sister, Shirley Hayeck of Fanwood.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Day Funeral Home, Inc. of Keyport. Visitation will be today, Thursday, March 26, and tomorrow, Friday, March 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 28, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Keyport. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Keyport.
Lindsey Conover, 18
College Student; Freshman Was Formerly of Westfield
Lindsey Brett Conover, 18, of Basking Ridge died on Sunday, March 22, 1998 in Lee Memorial Hospital in Fulton, New York from injuries she sustained in an automobile accident while returning to school.
Miss Conover was born in Summit and had lived in Westfield before moving to Basking Ridge four years ago.
She was a 1997 graduate of Ridge High in Basking Ridge and was a freshman at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York.
She was a communicant of Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her father, John L. Conover, 3rd and stepmother Lynn Conover of Basking Ridge, and her mother, Betty Jane Conover-Shonts and stepfather Dean L. Shonts of Morris Township; a brother, John L. Conover, 4th, of Basking Ridge, and her grandfather, William J. Pawelec of Summit.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Friday, March 27, at 1 p.m. in the Basing Ridge Presbyterian Church, One East Oak Street. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Peter Montalbano, 94
Parishioner; Retired President of Garment Firm
Peter Montalbano, 94, of Lauderhill, Florida, died on Monday, May 4, 1998 at Florida Medical Hospital in Lauderhill.
Born in Brooklyn, he had lived in Queens before moving to Scotch Plains 20 years ago. He also maintained a residence in Lauderhill.
Mr. Montalbano had been President of Bessan Garments in Brooklyn before retiring in 1968. He was a member of the Old Guard of the Plainfields and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
He was predeceased by his wife, Rose Campisi Montalbano in 1976.
Surviving are two sons, Anthony Montalbano of Piermont, New York and Joseph Montalbano of Bergenfield; a daughter, Dr. Bessie Sullivan of Scotch Plains, and eight grandchildren.
The funeral was held from the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, on Saturday, May 9, followed by a Mass at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains. Interment took place at St. John's Cemetery in Middle Village, New York.

Joseph N. Rose, 88
Joseph N. Rose, 88, of Fanwood died on Saturday, May 2, 1998 at home.
Born in Jamaica, West Indies, he had lived in the Bronx before moving to Fanwood in 1991.
Mr. Rose had been a police officer with the Kingston Police Department in Jamaica before retiring in the 1950s.
He was a member of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Scotch Plains.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby V. Rose; five daughters, Yvonne Rose of Fanwood, Hyacinth Young of Norfolk, Virginia, Barbara Thomas of Stone Mountain, Georgia, Josephine Rose of the Bronx and Jean Richards of Jamaica; 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, May 9, at the All Saints' Episcopal Church in Scotch Plains. Entombment took place at Hollywood Memorial Park in Union.
The Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, was in charge of the arrangements.
Katherine E. Bauer
Associate Publisher Of The Westfield Leader and The Times
Katherine E. Bauer, died Sunday, May 10, 1998 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Bauer attended a private parochial girls school and later attended the University of Pennsylvania.
Most recently, Mrs. Bauer had served as Associate Publisher of The Westfield Leader and The Times of Scotch Plains and Fanwood newspapers which were owned by her sons. Her late son, Kurt C. Bauer, purchased the long-established Westfield weekly in 1990 from the Walter J. Lee family. Mr. Bauer purchased The Times in 1993. Upon Kurt's death in January, 1996, Jeffrey L. Bauer became Publisher of the two papers and held that position until his death in March, 1996.
Mrs. Bauer had worked alongside her sons at the newspaper, performing administrative, bookkeeping and circulation duties.
She had also worked with her son, Kurt, when he was Publisher/ owner of The Rahway News-Record, established in 1822, and The Clark Patriot.
Mrs. Bauer's husband, Donald J. Bauer, who died in 1971, had been Senior Editor with Hearst Publications for more than 40 years, as well as a contributing editor with the now defunct New York Herald-Tribune.
A long-time resident of Westfield, Mrs. Bauer was very active in local organizations, including serving on the Board of Directors of the Westfield Symphony Orchestra from 1983 to 1994. She was a member of the Westfield Day Care Center Auxiliary; an antiques group called the Questers, and the Musical Club of Westfield. She was a communicant of the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Mrs. Bauer had resided in a home built by Kurt on Hillside Avenue. She and her son later sold the home and moved to New York City, where he had purchased a four-story brownstone. Several years later, they returned to Westfield and resided on Kimball Avenue.
Upon the deaths of her two sons, Mrs. Bauer sold the newspapers and retired.
Surviving are a sister, Athena Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona; a grandson, Andrew Bauer of Gladwyne, Pennsylvania; three nephews, Ted Johnson, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Tony Canike of New Hope, Pennsylvania, and Jay Watson, of Scottsdale, Arizona, and two nieces, Sylvia Manners of Miami, Florida, and Tina Michel of Scottsdale, Arizona.
A Funeral Mass will be held today, Thursday, May 14, at 10:30 a.m., at Holy Trinity Church in Westfield.
Arrangements are being handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield.

Carol Ann Kellner, 51
Carol Ann Kellner, 51, of the Belle Mead section of Hillsborough, died on Friday, May 8, 1998 from injuries she sustained in a car accident.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Stirling for 20 years and in Scotch Plains for eight years before moving to Belle Mead in 1977.
Mrs. Kellner was President of the Episcopal Church Woman's Group of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Rocky Hill.
Surviving are four daughters, Tracy Hampton of Branchburg, Dawn Kellner of Manville and Erica Kellner and Emily Kellner, both of Hillsborough; her mother, Anna Babcock of Princeton; three brothers, Roger Babcock of Tryon, North Carolina, Chester Babcock of Newton and Ronald Babcock of Union, South Carolina, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 12, at the Trinity Episcopal Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Hillsborough Funeral Home in Belle Mead.
