Victor Zydalis, 58
Victor Zydalis, 58, a lifelong resident of Manville, died on Thursday, May 7, 1998 at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
He had worked as a diesel mechanic for 27 years at Johns-Manville in Manville, and most recently was a machine assembler for Krupp Plastics in Branchburg.
Mr. Zydalis was a member of the Johns-Manville Quarter Century Club and of the Atoms Radio Control Club of New Jersey.
Surviving are his wife, Sandra Bloomquist Zydalis; two sons, Dennis Zydalis of Scotch Plains and Kevin Zydalis of Manville; three daughters, Peggy Ann Winkler and Deborah Zydalis, both of Jacksonville, Florida, and Joann Harris of Starke, Florida; a brother, Louis Zydallis of Manville; two sisters, Frances Barnosky of Manville and Cecilia Zydallis of Pittsburgh, and eight grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Ketusky Funeral Home in Manville.
Frank P. Krohel, 80
Frank P. Krohel, 80, of Readington Township died on Monday, May 4, 1998 at home.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Scotch Plains and in Wilton, Connecticut before moving to Readington Township 15 years ago.
He had been an accounting administrator for the Nabisco Company in East Hanover for many years before retiring in 1988.
Earlier, he had been the Treasurer for the P. Ballantine & Sons Brewery in Newark.
Mr. Krohel served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a transportation officer and quarter-master staff officer at the Patterson Army Air Field in Ohio.
He was a 1951 graduate of Seton Hall University in South Orange.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 4504 in Union.
Surviving are his wife, Estelle Krohel; three sons, Frank Krohel, Eric Krohel and Dr. Gregory Krohel; two daughters, Cynthia C. Losavio and Donna DeLoreto; a sister, Jean Brandt, and seven grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, May 7, at the Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home in Lebanon, followed by a Mass which was offered at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Whitehouse Station. Interment took place at Union Cemetery in Lebanon.
Nancy W. Gilmore, 77
Nancy W. Gilmore, 77, of Mountainside died on Friday, May 8, 1998 at Brighton Gardens in Mountainside.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she grew up in Shorewood, Wisconsin and attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
She had moved with her husband to Westfield in 1950, and in 1992 relocated to Palm City, Florida. Mrs. Gilmore moved to Mountainside last September.
She had been employed as an office manager by Acoustics, Inc. in Clark for 15 years before retiring in 1985.
Mrs. Gilmore was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Westfield and the Friends of the Westfield Memorial Library. She was also a member of the Plainfield Country Club for many years.
In addition, she served on the Women's Auxiliary of Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield.
She was a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Palm City, and was an emergency room volunteer at Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart, Florida.
She was predeceased by her husband, William H. Gilmore, in 1995. Surviving are three daughters, Nancy W. Gilmore of Newton, Sally B. Gilmore of Greenwich, Connecticut and Elizabeth M. Gilmore-Duddy of Scotch Plains, and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Westfield at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 16. There will be no visitation.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of an individual's choice.
Harold F. Paterson, 67
Harold F. "Pat" Paterson, 67, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, May 5, 1998 at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
Born in Elizabeth, he had lived most of his life in Scotch Plains.
He had served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Paterson was a carpet installer for 45 years for Lauter Carpeting in Newark and for Jasco Carpet Company in Union.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Kim P. Norman, in 1995. Surviving are his wife, Viola Paterson; a son, Donald F. Paterson of Scotch Plains; a brother, Donald W. Paterson of Temple Hills, Maryland; a sister, Mabel Royster of Scotch Plains; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on Saturday, May 9, at the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.
Walter T. Duda, 85
Plumber; Former Volunteer Fire Dept. Chief
Walter T. Duda, 85, of Mountainside died Saturday, May 9, 1998 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Hillside before moving to Mountainside 43 years ago.
Mr. Duda was the former Fire Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department in Mountainside.
He was a plumber for Bristol Meyers in Hillside for 30 years prior to retiring in 1972.
He was a member of the Republican County Committee. He was also a member of the Men's Club and a Bingo worker both of St. Stanislaus Church in Newark.
Surviving are his wife, Stella Duda; two sons, Walter F. Duda and Theodore J. Duda, and seven grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Wednesday, May 13, at St. Stanislaus Church. Arrangements were handled by the Laskowski Funeral Home in Union.
Dr. Manuel Lopez, 66
Staff Doctor; Maintained Private Practice in Area
Dr. Manuel M. Lopez, 66, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, May 9, 1998 at home.
Born in Bucaramanga, Santander, Columbia, he had lived in Rahway before moving to Scotch Plains.
Dr. Lopez was in private practice in Rahway since 1969. He was also a staff member at Rahway Hospital in Rahway.
He was a graduate of Universidad Nacional de Bogota, where he attended medical school. He served his residency at Alexandria Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia.
Dr. Lopez was a member of the Lafayette Lodge No. 27 of the Free and Accepted Masons in Rahway.
Surviving are his wife, Janet Lopez; two daughters, Natasha Lopez and Mishela Lopez, and two sisters, Esperanza Gualdran and Yolanda Calderon.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, May 13, at the Hollywood Baptist Church in North Plainfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Pettit-Davis Funeral Home in Rahway.
Thomas A. Fisher, 90
Thomas A. Fisher, 90, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, May 8, 1998 at the Ashbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotch Plains.
Mr. Fisher had been a lifelong resident of Jersey City before moving to Scotch Plains six months ago.
He served in the United States Army Corps of Engineering as a Staff Sergeant during World War II.
Mr. Fisher had been an accountant for M. W. Kellogg Company in New York City from 1943 to 1970, and was a member of their Quarter Century Club.
He was a communicant of St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in Jersey City.
Surviving are two nieces, Barbara J. Schwinn of Westfield and Elaine S. Newcomb of Willington, Connecticut; a great-niece, Ashley Schwinn Newcomb, and a great-nephew, Derek Schwinn Newcomb.
Visitation will be today, Thursday, May 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue in Cranford. A funeral service will follow at 8 p.m.
Interment will take place at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, May 15, at Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City.
