John P. Mahar, Sr., 101
Held Office; Had Owned Bus Company in Linden
John P. Mahar, Sr., 101, of Fanwood died on Sunday, May 31, 1998 at the home of his daughter.
Born in Oneonta, New York, he had lived in Linden for 97 years before moving to Fanwood six months ago.
Mr. Mahar had been a warehouse worker for Merck and Company in Rahway for 12 years, retiring in 1961. He previously had been an owner of the Mahar-Villani Bus Company in Linden for 30 years.
He was an United States Army veteran of World War I, serving in France. He was a former City Councilman in Linden and a member of the Linden Exempt Firemen's Association.
Mr. Mahar was a member and Past Commander of American Legion Post No. 102 in Linden, as well as its Last Man Club.
He was a member of the Linden Knights of Columbus Council No. 2859, and of the Holy Name Society and the 50 Plus Club of St. Elizabeth's Roman Catholic Church in Linden. He was inducted into the Union County Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Wagner Mahar; a son, John P. Mahar, Jr. of Linden; a daughter, Helen Byrne of Fanwood; five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. A Funeral Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, June 3, at St. Elizabeth's Church in Linden. Arrangements were handled by the Leonard-Lee Funeral Home in Linden.

Ann M. Conlin, 66
Ann M. Conlin, 66, of Oxford, Pennsylvania, originally from Westfield, died on Friday, May 29, 1998 at her residence.
Born in Westfield, she had lived in the town most of her life before relocating to Oxford nine years ago. She was a 1950 graduate of Westfield High School.
Mrs. Conlin had worked as a secretary at Croll-Reynolds in Westfield before retiring. She previously was employed by Delbarton School in Morristown and by Capital Airlines as a stewardess.
She was a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Oxford.
Mrs. Conlin was predeceased by her parents, Robert P. and Mary Oneill Laing.
Surviving are her husband, A. Bruce Conlin, Jr. of Oxford; a son, Kenneth Brown of Gilbert, Arizona; a sister, Patricia Lambert of Manchester, and a brother, William Laing of Asbury.
A private funeral service and interment had been arranged under the direction of the Edward L. Collins Funeral Home, Inc. of Oxford, Pennsylvania.

Arthur Zemel, 87
Arthur Zemel, 87, of Maplewood died on Sunday, May 31, 1998 at his home.
Born in Plainfield, he had lived there for 86 years before moving to Winchester Gardens in Maplewood one and a half years ago.
Mr. Zemel had been a banker and Chairman of the Board at Rock Bank of North Plainfield for 25 years, retiring in 1994. He was a Certified Public Accountant for 30 years with Dorosin & Zemel in Linden, and with Zemel, Mailman & Reiter in North Plainfield.
He also was a consultant for Wakefern Food Corporation.
Mr. Zemel was a member of the Plainfield Free and Accepted Masons Lodge, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Intercontinental Life Insurance Company of Newark, the Franklin State Bank in Somerset, and the Community State Bank of Linden.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ann Tucker Zemel, in 1995, and by two brothers, Jacob Zemel and William Zemel.
Surviving are a son, Robert S. Zemel of Westfield; a daughter, Susan R. Lappin of Mendham; a brother, Sol Zemel of Florida, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 2, at the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung.
Harriet M. Stanley, 80
Harriet M. Stanley, 80, of Westfield died on Thursday, May 28, 1998 at the Westfield Center, Genesis ElderCare Network.
Born in Bayonne, she had lived in Westfield for 51 years.
She was a communicant of St. Helen's Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Surviving are her husband, Stanley T. Stanley; a son, Stanley J. Stanley of Manhattan; a daughter, Harriet M. Stanley of Hillsborough; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Saturday, May 30, at St. Helen's Church, following the funeral from the Dooley Colonial Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
G. A. "Peg" Schryba, 81
Den Mother; Headed Bamberger's Workers Group
Gertrude Anna "Peg" Schryba, 81, of Mountainside died on Sunday, May 31, 1998 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Newark, she had lived there before moving to Mountainside in 1951.
Mrs. Schryba had worked for Bamberger's in Newark during the 1940s as a section manager. She was the first woman President of the department store's Co-Workers Association.
She was active with the Westfield Day Care Center and the First Congregational Church of Westfield, as well as the church's Bible Study Group.
Mrs. Schryba had been a den mother for the Mountainside Cub Scouts.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Schryba, in 1991. Surviving are two sons, Paul R. Schryba of Mountainside and William K. Schryba of Trenton, and a brother, Richard Jaeger of Culver Lake.
Funeral Services were held yesterday, Wednesday, June 3, in the First Congregational Church. Interment took place at Hollywood Memorial Park in Union. Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, in Westfield.

John Paltz, 57
John Paltz, 57, of Florida died on Wednesday, May 27, 1998 at the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center in Brandon, Florida.
Born in Plainfield, he had lived in Fanwood and in Connecticut before moving to Florida 20 years ago.
He attended Notre Dame University and graduated from St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, New York.
Mr. Paltz was a product marketing manager for Lykes of Florida and a surveyor at Comer Engineering in Plant City, Florida.
He was also a member of Plant City Elks Lodge No. 1727.
He was a former member of the New Jersey National Guard.
Surviving are his mother, Grace Paltz of Columbia, Maryland; two brothers, Walter Paltz of San Diego, California, and Christopher Paltz, of Cranford, and a sister Mary Grace Van Nest of Davidsonville, Maryland.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, June 2, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Mark L. Cagnassola
Mark L. Cagnassola, 38, of North Bellmore, New York, died on Thursday, May 28, 1998 in the Nassau County Medical Center in New York.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he had lived in Westfield before moving to North Bellmore in 1993.
He was a painter for Regional Builders Company in North Bellmore. Prior to that, he had been a painter and a mason in the Westfield area for many years.
Mr. Cagnassola served in the United States Army during peacetime.
Surviving are his parents, Louis and Louise Cagnassola; five brothers, Christopher Cagnassola, Joseph Cagnassola, Louis Cagnassola, Jr., Jon Cagnassola and Paul Cagnassola.
