Elia Di Francesco, 96
Elia Di Francesco, 96, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, May 20, 1998 at home.
Born in Montazzali, Chiete, Italy, she settled in Scotch Plains in 1924.
She was a member of the St. Nicholas' Women's Auxiliary of Scotch Plains, and of the St. Bartholomew Rosary Altar Society.
Surviving are four sons, Anthony M. Di Francesco, Victor A. Di Francesco, Nicholas Di Francesco and Mauro N. Di Francesco; a brother, Ernest Di Francesco; seven grandchildren and 13 great- grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Saturday, May 23, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Viola M. Ammirata
Viola M. Lombardi Ammirata of Westfield died on Monday, May 25, 1998 at Union Hospital.
Born in Campobasso, Italy, she was raised in Newark and had lived in Westfield for the last 42 years.
She was a homemaker. Mrs. Ammirata was predeceased by a son, John Ammirata.
Surviving are her husband, John Ammirata; a daughter, Judith Pici of Islandia, New York; a brother, Wilson Lombardi of Toms River, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, May 28, at 10 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield. Burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Dooley Colonial Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

Walter R. Nelson, 83
Walter R. Nelson, 83, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, died on Thursday, April 30, 1998.
Mr. Nelson had worked for the Scotch Plains Post Office retiring in 1977.
He served with the United States Naval Amphibious Forces in the Pacific during World War II.
Mr. Nelson was a member of the National Association of USS LCS (L) 1- 130 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4174.
Surviving are his wife, Marguerite Nelson; two stepdaughters, Barbara Sloboda and Denise Worrell; a stepson, Glenn Hansen; a sister, Marjorie Nelson; 10 grandchildren, and eight great- grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the United States Navy Memorial Foundation, 701 Pennsylvania Avenue, N. W. Suite 123, Washington, D. C. 20004.

Louie F. Farmer, Sr.
Louie Franklin Farmer, Sr. of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, May 23, 1998 at his home.
Born in Olive Branch, Mississippi, he had lived in Jersey City before moving to Scotch Plains 26 years ago.
Mr. Farmer was a postal supervisor in Jersey City for 35 years. He served in the United States Air Force.
Surviving are his wife, Olive Farmer; two sons, Leonard Farmer and Louie Franklin Farmer, Jr.; three daughters, Malinda Harrison, Brigette Morgan and Dawn Petty, all of Scotch Plains; his mother, Florida Farmer; two brothers, Gerald Farmer and Michael Farmer; a sister, Linda Jean Lewis, all of Memphis, Tennessee, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today, Thursday, May 28, at the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.

Christian K. Larew, 45
Christian Kesel Larew, 45, of Plainfield died on Thursday, May 21, 1998 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Canton, Ohio he had lived in Fanwood before moving to Plainfield in 1981.
Mr. Larew was Special Projects Director for Baker & Taylor, a book distribution company in Bridgewater, for 20 years.
He was a 1974 graduate of Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia, and received his master's degree in library science from the University of Maryland.
Surviving are his father, John Larew, and two sisters, Laura Boisvert and Gabrielle Wallace.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, May 23, in the Grace Episcopal Church in Plainfield. Arrangements were handled by the Higgins Home For Funerals in Plainfield.

Curtis L. Kaufman, 77
Curtis Lee Kaufman, 77, of Edison died on Wednesday, May 20, 1998 at Veterans Memorial Home in Edison.
Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, he had lived in Westfield for many years before moving to Edison two years ago.
Mr. Kaufman had worked for Conrail Railroad for more than 30 years, retiring in 1983.
He was a United States veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Clara Kaufman, and a sister, Florence Lewis of Astoria, Queens.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 23, at Clover Leaf Memorial Park Chapels in Woodbridge. Arrangements were handled by the Plinton Curry Funeral Home in Westfield.

Joseph H. Klein
Joseph H. Klein of Watchung died on Tuesday, May 19, 1998 in the Workmen's Circle of Elizabeth.
Born in Austria- Hungary, he had lived in Scotch Plains and Warren before moving to Watchung.
Mr. Klein had been a chef for Tabatchnick's in South Orange for more than 30 years before retiring in 1988.
He was a member of B'nai B'rith in Livingston.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda Fedinec; four brothers, Alfred Klein, Rabbi Moshe Gottesman, Rabbi Menachem Gottesman and Eli Gottesman, and two sisters, Sally Heinrich and Jean Reichlen.

Joseph F. Lawless, 88
Hero Officer; Rescued 11 During 1943 Hotel Fire
Joseph F. Lawless, 88, of Berkeley Heights died on Saturday, May 23, 1998 in the Berkeley Convalescent Center in Berkeley Heights.
Born in Jersey City, he had lived in New Monmouth and Scotch Plains before moving to Berkeley Heights.
Mr. Lawless had been a police officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for 25 years before retiring as a Lieutenant in 1962. He then became the Director of Police in Englewood for two years.
Mr. Lawless rescued 11 people from a hotel fire on Christmas Eve in 1943. He received the first Medal of Honor awarded by the Port Authority for his part in the evacuation of the hotel. At the time of the fire, he was on motorcycle patrol at the Lincoln Tunnel.
He was a volunteer with St. Joseph's Children's School for the Blind in Jersey City and a member of the Policemen's Benevolent Associations of New York and New Jersey, the Superior Officers Association of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the Honor Legion of the State of New Jersey.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph Lawless and Robert Lawless; three daughters, Margaret Boland, Jeanne McQuade and Anne King; a brother, Thomas Lawless; a sister, Ann Diefendorf, 12 grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, May 27, in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in New Monmouth.
Arrangements were handled by the John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Inc. in Middletown.
