Was Realtor; Member of Business Women’s Club
Marguerite Addis Waters, 88, of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, July 30, 1998 at her daughter’s home in Whitehouse Station.
Born in Briarcliff Manor, New York, she had lived in Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx before moving to Scotch Plains 41 years ago.
She was formerly a secretary to the president of the Fifth Avenue Bank in New York City, and was a real estate Sales Associate with the Frank Wiser Agency in Scotch Plains for many years. She served on both the Plainfield and Westfield Boards of Realtors.
Mrs. Waters was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Scotch Plains, and donated time to the Service League Thrift Shop, also in Scotch Plains.
She was a charter member, as well as the oldest living member, of the Briarcliff Congregational Church in Briarcliff, New York.
Surviving are her husband, Walter “Doc” Waters; a daughter, Jane Andresen of Whitehouse Station; a son, Charles Waters of Whitehouse Station, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 4, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hunterdon Hospice, 2200 Westcott Drive, Flemington, 08822.

Lucia Preite Bavosa, 96
Lucia Preite Bavosa, 96, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, July 31, 1998 at her home.
Born in Pescopaganese, Italy, she had lived in Roselle Park before moving to Scotch Plains in 1948.
She had been a secretary for the Park Travel Agency, a Scotch Plainsbased firm owned by her husband, retiring many years ago.
Mrs. Bavosa was a member of the St. Nicholas Women’s Auxiliary Society of Scotch Plains.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Bavosa, in 1991.
Surviving are two brothers, Dominic Preite and Gaetano Preite, and two sisters, Rosina Pugliese and Elvira Freda.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, August 3, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Virginia M. Ortleb, 75
Virginia M. Ortleb, 75, of Brick died on Sunday, July 26, 1998 at the Laurelton Village Care Center in Brick.
Born in New York City, she had lived in Fanwood for 39 years before moving to Brick two years ago.
Mrs. Ortleb was a collector and dealer of antiques.
She was predeceased by her husband, John T. Ortleb, in 1989, and her son, Bruce Fleming, in 1994.
Surviving are two sons, Jon D. Ortleb and Randal J. Ortleb, both of Brick; a sister, Patricia Murphy of Dunellen, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Private funeral services were held at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 2550 US Highway 1, North Brunswick, 089024301.

H.D. Gibson Scheffer, 80
Engineer; Purdue Graduate Worked for RCA
H.D. Gibson Scheffer 80, a lifelong resident of Westfield who also maintained a residence in Tequesta, Florida, died on Tuesday, July 28, 1998 in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Mr. Scheffer was a graduate of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, earning his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
He had been an electronic engineer at RCA at the Sarnoff Research Center in Princeton and the Solid State Division in Somerville, retiring several years ago.
Surviving is his wife, Catherine Virginia Scheffer.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 31, at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were under the direction of the McCracken Funeral Home in Union.

Eva M. Singer, 92
Eva Meta Peterson Singer, 92, of Berkeley Heights died on Thursday, July 30, 1998 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Brooklyn on January 1, 1906, she had lived most of her life in Westfield.
Mrs. Singer was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, Leo Singer, in 1984.
Surviving are two daughters, Miriam Cameron of Oldsmar, Florida, Jean O’Brien of Clearwater, Florida, and Rita Sarle of Westfield; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Religious services were held on Saturday, August 1, at the Gray Funeral Home in Westfield, with the Reverend George Freyberger officiating. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 208 West End Avenue, Bridgewater, 08807.

Ruth Lyles, 72
Ruth Lyles, 72, a lifelong Plainfield resident, died on Saturday, July 25, 1998 in the Stoval Nursing Center in Denver.
She was born in Westfield. Mrs. Lyles had been employed by One-Hour Martinizing Cleaners in Plainfield for five years, and later worked at G.O. Kellers Cleaners on Leland Avenue in Plainfield for 23 years.
She was a member of the Temple of Love Church in Piscataway.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Edward Lyles.
Surviving are four daughters, Robin Berry and Ruth Ann Lyles, both of Plainfield, and Wendy Young and Valerie Cole, both of Denver; four sons, Carl Lyles of Plainfield, Charles Berry of Newark, Calvin Lyles of Michigan and James Lyles of New York; a brother, William Green of Plainfield; three sisters, Julia Graham of Plainfield, the Reverend Delores Barron of Piscataway and Pearl Carter of Scotch Plains, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, at Brown’s Funeral Home in Plainfield, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 600 First Avenue, Raritan, 08869.

Anna Kankowski, 98
Anna Kankowski, 98, of Scotch Plains died on Monday, August 3, 1998 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Germany, she had lived in Newark and Irvington before moving to Scotch Plains in 1993.
She was a member of the Irvington American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and the Irvington Senior Citizens.
Surviving are a son, Raymond Kane; two daughters, Gloria Ball and Irene Brockman; a sister, Emily Cochran; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, August 7, in St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
