Frances Adams, 90
Frances Adams, 90, of Lavallette died on Wednesday, August 12, 1998 in Country Manor in Toms River.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Lavallette 25 years ago.
Mrs. Adams was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Lavallette Rescue Squad, the Rosary Society of St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church in Lavallette, and the Catholic Daughters of America. She also was active in volunteer work for overseas Catholic missions.
Surviving are a son, Gregory Adams; two daughters, Laura Parisi and Katherine Mathias; three sisters, Cel Hoer, Loretta Schaff and Mary Higgins; two brothers; Joe Kraft and Carl Kraft; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Friday, August 14, at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, in Westfield.
Robert Schantz, 76
Military Veteran; Harvard Graduate Headed Company
Robert Mack Schantz, 76, of Virginia Beach, Virginia died on Thursday, August 13, 1998 in Red Lodge, Montana, from injuries sustained after being struck by another driver while returning from a fishing trip.
Born on January 19, 1922, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Gordon and Isabel Tolan Schantz. He had lived in Westfield and in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania prior to moving to Virginia Beach.
Mr. Schantz had been employed in production management with the Scout Paper Company in Marinette, Wisconsin and Mobile, Alabama; the F & M Schaefer Brewing Company in Brooklyn; Sunshine Biscuits in Sayreville before retiring as President of InterMetro Industries in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania in 1990.
A 1939 graduate of William Allen High School in Allentown, he received his bachelor’s degree in engineering in 1943 from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and his Master in Business Administration Degree from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1948.
Commissioned an Ensign in 1943, Mr. Schantz served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during World War II. He received a Letter of Commendation, ETO (One Battle Star), and from the Pacific Theater, four battle stars.
After serving aboard a destroyer and several submarines, his last tour of duty was as Commanding Officer of the USS SC 769. He was discharged in 1946 as a Lieutenant.
Mr. Schantz was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
He was predeceased by his wife, Sally Mengel Schantz, in 1992.
He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Lehigh University, Harvard Club of New York City, Echo Lake Country Club of Westfield, Westmoreland Club of Wilkes Barre and, most recently, the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club in Norfolk, Virginia.
He was a former director of the American Red Cross, Wyoming Valley Chapter and also the Greater Wilkes Barre Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving are two sons, Robert M. Schantz, Jr. of Jericho, Vermont and David M. Schantz of Wayne, Pennsylvania; a daughter, Susan S. Paddock of Virginia Beach; a sister, Mary Louise Bowes of Cincinnati, Ohio, and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, August 20, in the Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, 2344 Center Street, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. There will be no calling hours.
Interment will be at Nisky Hill Cemetery in Bethlehem.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lehigh University, College of Business and Economics, Undergraduate Division Scholarships.
The Pearson Funeral Home in Bethlehem is in charge of the arrangements.
Betty Fitzgerald, 72
Betty Davis Wesson Fitzgerald, 72, of Wayne died on Saturday August 15, 1998 at her daughter’s home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
Born and educated in Westfield, she received a private art education. She was a resident of Wayne for 42 years.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was a prominent artist whose work was exhibited in many galleries throughout the country. She was a member of the Woodmere Art Association, the Da Vinci Art Alliance, and was a former board member of the Main Line Center of the Arts.
As a cancer survivor, she served as a volunteer counselor for newly-diagnosed cancer patients at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
She was an honoree at “Celebrate Life” of Bryn Mawr Hospital, and an artist for the “Visions and Verses” display there.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was active in many aspects of the Wayne Presbyterian Church. Most recently, she was a Stephens Minister and a member of the Church Arts Council.
Surviving are her husband, John P. Fitzgerald; a daughter, Joann Wesson Gaul of Richboro, Pennsylvania, and Stephen D. Wesson of Downington, Pennsylvania, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service was held yesterday, Wednesday, August 19, at the Wayne Presbyterian Church.

Alice C. Moore, 85
Member of Sorority; Was Wesley Hall Nursery School Director
Alice C. Moore, 85, of Bridgewater died on Sunday, August 9, 1998 at the Westfield Center, Genesis ElderCare Network, in Westfield.
Born in Cranford, she had previously lived in Hillsborough, in Westfield for 30 years, in Toms River and in Somerville.
Mrs. Moore had been employed by the First United Methodist Church of Westfield for 20 years as the Director of the Wesley Hall Nursery School, retiring in 1976.
She graduated with a liberal arts degree in 1935 from the American University in Washington, D.C., and was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. She had also worked for the Office on Aging in Somerset.
Mrs. Moore was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the American Association of University Women of Westfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Moore, in 1991.
Surviving are a son, Donald Kent Moore of Whitehouse Station; a daughter, Judith Ann Marx of Somerville, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 22, at 4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Westfield, 1 East Broad Street.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals in Toms River.
Helen M. Ziegler, 88
Helen Markus Ziegler, 88, of Scotch Plains died on Sunday, August 16, 1998 at the Ashbrook Nursing Home in Scotch Plains.
Born in Carteret, Mrs. Ziegler lived there most of her life.
She was a homemaker. Mrs. Ziegler was a member of the Hungarian Reformed Church in Carteret, and belonged to the church’s Lorantffy Women’s Guild.
She was predeceased by her husband, Karl A. Ziegler, in 1982.
Surviving are a son, Karl F. Ziegler of Fanwood; two grandsons, and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, August 19, at the Hungarian Reformed Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Synowiecki Funeral Home in Carteret.
Mary B. Hamilton, 80
Registered Nurse; Active in Multiple Red Cross Programs
Mary B. Hamilton, 80, of Chatham Township died on Friday, August 14, 1998 in the Denton Regional Medical Center in Denton, Texas.
Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, she had lived in New York City, Pitman and Westfield before moving to Chatham Township in 1968.
Mrs. Hamilton was a registered nurse in brain surgery at the New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center.
She was a volunteer nurse with the American Red Cross for 45 years, and served with the Westfield/ Mountainside Chapter as the Chairwoman of Nursing Services. Mrs. Hamilton also served with the Madison Chapter.
She additionally worked for the Red Cross polio and disaster duty as well as the blood program.
Mrs. Hamilton taught first aid, home care for the sick and injured, and mother and baby care. She helped write a manual on safe baby sitting procedures in Westfield, and taught a medical self-help course in the Adult School for the Westfield Civil Defense Unit.
Mrs. Hamilton served on President Dwight Eisenhower’s Conference of the Aging; was Past Treasurer of the Town and County Garden Club of Chatham Township, and was a member of the Chatham Senior Center.
Surviving are a son, William Hamilton; a daughter, Avis Truesdell, and two grandchildren.
A funeral service was held yesterday, Wednesday, August 19, at the Ogden Memorial Presbyterian Church in Chatham.
