Hans Alber, 73
Hans Alber, 73, of Pennsylvania died on Sunday, August 16, 1998 in Muhlenberg Hospital Center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Born in Bernhausen-Filderstadt, Germany, he had lived in Mountainside before moving to Pennsylvania several years ago.
Mr. Alber had owned Alber’s Fireplaces in Bridgewater before retiring in 1986. Previously, he had owned the Alber International Machine Company in Green Brook, and the Double H Products Company in Lawrence Harbor.
He had earlier been a tool-and-die engineer, and had owned the Richman Tool & Die Company in Staten Island, New York, where he invented the Flow Control Valve.
Mr. Alber was a member of the Deutscher Club in Clark.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda Alber and Heidi Alber; a brother, Alfred Alber, and a sister, Lydia Alber.
Private services were arranged under the direction of the John H. Brubaker Funeral Home in Catasauqua, Pennsylvania.
Leon Steinhauer
Leon Steinhauer of Scotch Plains died on Monday, August 17, 1998 in the Theo House in Elizabeth.
Born in Newark, Mr. Steinhauer had lived in Irvington and New Providence before moving to Scotch Plains five years ago.
He had been a printer for The Newark Evening News and The Herald Tribune News in New York City, before retiring many years ago.
Mr. Steinhauer served in the United States Army during World War II, and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
Surviving are two sons, Jeffrey Steinhauer and Wayne Steinhauer; a daughter, Lisa Steinhauer; a sister, Blanche Silver, and a grandchild.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, August 19, in the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
John J. Powers, 68
Retired Police Lieutenant in Township
John J. Powers, 68, of Scotch Plains, died Friday, June 26, 1998 at the Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Kenilworth, he had been a lifelong resident of Scotch Plains.
Mr. Powers served in the United States Navy for five years during the Korean Conflict as a flight mechanic aboard aircraft carriers, one of which was the first canted deck carrier.
He was employed by the United States Post Office in Scotch Plains, until he resigned in 1961 to join the Scotch Plains Police Department. He retired from the Police Department in 1995 with the rank of Lieutenant and 34 years of service to his community.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, American Legion Post No. 209, Policemen's Benevolent Association Local No. 87, all in Scotch Plains, the Emerald Society of Union County as well as a volunteer with Boy Scout Post No. 209 in Scotch Plains.
Mr. Powers was predeceased by a son, James O'Hara Powers, an assistant swimming and girls volleyball coach and substitute teacher at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, on June 6.
Surviving are his wife E. Beverly Johansen Powers; four sons, Lawrence Powers of Bridgewater, Christopher Powers of Union, John A. Powers of Holtwood, Pennsylvania, and Patrick Powers of Roselle Park; two brothers, Joseph Powers of Toms River and Lawrence Powers of Smyrna, Delaware; five sisters, Anna Meyer of Scotch Plains, Mary Lou Mann of Mays Landing, Jean Iaione of Fanwood, Katherine Meyer of Pine Beach, and Frances Keller of Tuscon, Arizona, and seven grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, June 30, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood.
In lieu of flowers or Mass Cards, contributions may be made to the James O'Hara Powers Memorial Scholarship Fund at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School.
Lynne E. Byrnes, 41
Was State Deputy Attorney General
Lynne E. Byrnes, 41, of Lawrenceville, died on Saturday, June 27, 1998 at home.
Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, she had lived in Scotch Plains and Princeton before moving to Lawrenceville in 1990.
Ms. Burns graduated from Colorado State University in 1978 and received her master's degree in psychology from Rutgers University in 1980. In 1983, she earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree from Seton Hall University Law School in Newark.
She served as a Deputy Attorney General focusing on environmental law for the State of New Jersey in Trenton, since 1987. Earlier, she had been a law clerk with Superior Court Judge Arnold Stein and an Assistant Counselor for former Governor Thomas H. Kean.
Ms. Byrnes was a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Surviving are her husband, Gregory Romano; her parents, Thomas P. and Elsie Byrnes; a brother, Robert S. Byrnes, and a sister, Deborah Byrnes. A Funeral Mass was held at on Wednesday, July, 1 in the Aquinas Institute, Princeton.
Arrangements were held by the Mather-Hodge Funeral Home in Princeton.
Alexander Bentley, 75
PSE&G; Supervisor, Elder at Presbyterian
Alexander A. Bentley, 75, of Westfield, died on Tuesday, June 23, 1998 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Yonkers, New York, he had lived in Metuchen for many years before moving to Westfield 33 years ago.
Mr. Bentley was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II. He served for three-and-a-half years during which time he was aboard the U.S.S. Boyle, a destroyer in the Pacific and Mediterranean Theatre.
Mr. Bentley was employed with PSE&G in Newark for 36 years as a Senior Field Supervisor before retiring in 1987.
He was ordained as an Elder of the Presbyterian Church and was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield and the Monday Morning Craftsmen, the Chapter 13 Seniors Club and a long-time member of the Triangle Bowling League, all of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
Mr. Bentley was also a member of PSE&G's bowling league, and a member of the Old Guard of Westfield. He was also a volunteer in Union Hospital in Union.
Surviving are his wife, Carole Scharff Bentley; three daughters, Debra Genabith of Watchung, Sheila Bower and Brenda Kuhnhenn, both of Glendale, Arizona, and seven grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 10, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or The Valerie Fund, in care of Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Arrangements are being handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, Westfield.
Harriet Antle Thomas
Harriett Antle Thomas, a former long-time resident of Westfield, died Thursday, June 25, 1998 in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Mrs. Thomas had been a member of the United Methodist Church.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Clifford L. Antle; by her second husband, Issac Thomas, and by a daughter, Phyllis Antle Bingham.
Surviving are three grandsons, and three great-grandchildren.
Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Pumphrey Funeral Home in Bethesda, Maryland.
Mary E. O'Sullivan, 79
Mary Elizabeth O'Sullivan, 79, of Waldwick, died Monday, June 29, 1998 at home.
Born in Bayonne, she had lived in Westfield and Roselle before moving to Waldwick in 1979.
Mrs. O'Sullivan was a lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph the Carpenter Roman Catholic Church in Roselle and St. Gabrielle's Roman Catholic Church in Upper Montclair.
She was a member and Past President of the Maternity Guild at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Elizabeth for more than 20 years.
Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Gilbert and Kathleen McTague; a son, Joseph F.X. O'Sullivan, Jr.; two sisters, Angela Hourigan and Barbara Dalton, and eight grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be offered today, Thursday, July 2, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Teresa of Avila Roman Catholic Church in Summit. Arrangements are being handled by the William A. Bardley & Son Funeral Home in Chatham.
